Billboard Hot 100 Festival 2017 Preview

Remaining central to music while so much else has changed, Billboard is still the chart to define all music sales charts. Two years ago the Billboard Hot 100 began a festival of its top acts at Jones Beach Theater (QRO photos), and it returns for a third year this weekend, Saturday & Sunday, August 19th & 20th:

SATURDAY, AUGUST 19th

Hot 100 Stage

Big Sean, 10:00 PM – 11:00 PM

The in-demand rapper Big Sean (QRO photos at a festival), from Detroit, comes to Long Island to headline Billboard Hot 100 (QRO photos at a festival) behind this year’s I Decided, his third studio album – and second number one hit.

Zedd, 8:30 PM – 9:30 PM

German electro-house producer Zedd (real name: Anton Zaslavski) has been branching out into complextro & dubstep, as he’s become a festival regular (QRO photos at a festival).
Zedd
Demi Lovato, 7:40 PM – 8:05 PM

Billboard Hot 100 Festival is particularly known for special huge-name guests. Two years ago was the-one-and-thankfully-only Justin Bieber (QRO photos); this year is another major star, Demi Lovato. Lovato rose from her child actress Disney Channel days, suffered through treatment and a bipolar diagnosis, to become one of the biggest forces in pop music today, as well as a big charity and LGBT advocate.
Demi Lovato
Gucci Mane, 5:00 PM – 7:00 PM

Along with the likes of T.I. & Young Jeezy, Gucci Mane pioneered the trap music style of hip-hop. Of course, he’s had his problems with the law, as well as fellow trap rappers like Young Jeezy and Sunday’s Waka Flocka Flame (see below). He comes to Billboard Hot 100 behind last year’s The Return of East Atlanta Santa album, this year’s collaboration with Metro Boomin, DropTopWop, and his Billboard Hot 100 #1 single “Black Beatles”, with Billboard Hot 100 ‘16’s Rae Sremmurd (QRO photos at Billboard Hot 100 ’16).

Bea Miller, 4:45 PM – 5:30 PM

After coming in ninth place on season two of The X Factor, Bea Miller signed to Disney’s Hollywood Records and released gold record Not an Apology. She comes to Billboard Hot 100 behind her Chapter EPs, which will get a compiled full release, with extras, in November.

Tinashe Jorgenson Kachingwe first came to notice for her acting, including motion capturing the female protagonist in Tom Hanks’ Polar Express, but more recently has broken out as a singer/songwriter, already up to third album this year with Joyride – and even performed “America the Beautiful” at WrestleMania 33 earlier this year!

SUNDAY, AUGUST 20th

Hot 100 Stage

Major Lazer, 9:45 PM – 11:00 PM

The collaboration between DJ/producers Diplo (QRO photos) and Switch (QRO photos) made a serious breakthrough in 2009 as Major Lazer (QRO photos at a festival), with Guns Don’t Kill People. Lazers Do. They’ve since released more, like this year’s Music Is the Weapon (even produced Reincarnated, Snoop Dogg’s reggae album as ‘Snoop Lion’) – and know how to do it at festivals (QRO photos at a festival).
Major Lazer
marshmello, 8:00 PM – 9:00 PM

Inspired by the masked DJ likes of deadmau5 and Daft Punk, masked DJ marshmello (QRO photos at a festival) remains a mystery (QRO photos), even as he plays his second Billboard Hot 100 Festival in a row (QRO photos at Billboard Hot 100 ’16).

Lil Yachty
T-Pain, 5:45 PM – 6:30 PM

Maybe no one is as ubiquitous as T-Pain, who’s been featured on over 50 chart-topping singles, and has ranged from Flo Rida’s “Low” to Lonely Island’s “I’m On a Boat”. He’s also something of a master of Auto-Tune, with extreme parameters to create distinctive vocals sounds.
