Las Vegas’ Panic! At the Disco (QRO photos at a festival) released Too Weird To Live, To Rare To Die! last year and have been touring ever since (QRO photos). While still definitely emo (QRO photos), their energy & humor has helped lift their live show (QRO live review).
What a wild ride it’s been for Elvis Costello (QRO album review), who’ll be back at the helm of one of the greatest bands of a generation. Fronting the Imposters (QRO photos at a festival), the quirky-yet-enigmatic front man will be capping off an illustrious career – one that took Costello and his oversized glasses on a punk rock tear that’s lasted over three and a half decades; one that still continues to this day.
He’s kicked the Beastie Boys off the Saturday Night Live stage, drunkenly fought Stephen Stills, and survived a poorly reported racism scandal, all the while very publicly idolizing George Jones. He’s impossible to nail down, but one thing’s for sure: The world’s second-most famous Elvis embodies the phrase punk rock lives (QRO album review).
Although the ‘90s may have mellowed him out – see co-writing sessions with Paul McCartney and guest staring on Frasier – Costello’s punk rock stature is unquestionable (QRO live review), and it’s exactly that kind of reputation that he’ll be bringing to Bumbershoot (QRO photos at a festival).
“Wu-Tang Clan ain’t nothing to fuck with!” The Staten Island outfit (QRO photos at a festival) was the hip-hop collective of the nineties, spawning the careers of the likes of RZA (QRO photos at a festival), GZA (QRO live review), Method Man, Raekwon (QRO photos at a festival), Ghostface Killah, and more. As fearless as they are skilled, Wu-Tang is arguably the greatest rap group ever. Their members have done much else (not just singing – RZA released his directorial debut, Russell Crowe kung-fu flick The Man with the Iron Fists), but have been getting the band back together (save for the late Ol’ Dirty Bastard), and this year all together put out A Better Tomorrow.

Just as the post-Katrina rebuilding of New Orleans has been taking a while, so has the post-Katrina (re)discovery of New Orleans music – but one of the biggest & best to come out of the Big Easy is bounce music, mixing hip-hop with local dance and Mardi Gras call-and-response, and one of the biggest & best in bounce is Big Freedia (QRO photos at a festival), with the big asses (QRO photos) that recently set the world twerking record, not to mention starring in their own FUSE series…
Detroit rapper Danny Brown (QRO photos at a festival) earned serious critical acclaim in 2011 with XXX, SPIN’s hip-hop album of the year (QRO photos at SPIN party) – and last year he came out with Old.
Acclaimed for their own solo careers, singer/songwriters Ted Leo (QRO photos at a festival) and Aimee Mann have teamed up as The Both.
Greg Dulli’s soul-influenced rock group The Afghan Whigs (QRO photos at a festival) rocketed out of Cincinnati in the nineties, but broke up the same year Americans learned Afghans weren’t just blankets (with Dulli going on with his Twilight Singers – QRO photos at a festival). But in 2011 not only did the group announce their reunion (QRO photos at a festival), but also a new record, this year’s Do the Beast, and subsequent tour (QRO live review).

Some artists toil in obscurity for years, even decades, but Mac DeMarco (QRO photos at a festival) is only just old enough to drink, and already has his debut full-length, Mac DeMarco 2, and reputation for wild live shows (QRO photos at a festival) that brings him to Bumbershoot (QRO photos at a festival).
Minneapolis indie/electronic/R&B outfit Poliça (QRO photos at a festival) have been getting serious attention in the last few years (and not just for the ‘ç’…).
In their self-titled album, Walk the Moon (QRO review) these Ohio natives (QRO live review) became one of America’s infectious indie rock groups (QRO photos at a festival) and it’s easy to see why: their catchy guitar riffs, fun and creamy pop beats can strike a tune within any listener (QRO photos at a festival). In 2012, the band (QRO photos) had the ‘song of the summer’ in “Anna Sun”, but they’re more than just that great single (QRO photos).

Hip-hop artist Quincy Matthew Hanley – a.k.a. ScHoolboy Q (QRO photos at a festival) – followed up 2011’s acclaimed Setbacks with 2012’s Habits & Contradictions and February’s Oxymoron.
When the Pixies (QRO live review) reunited at Coachella in 2004, we couldn’t have known how far and how great the trend of alt-rock reunions would become in this century/millennium. There’s been Dinosaur Jr. (QRO live review), Pavement (QRO live review), and now The Replacements! The band basically originated/defined ‘college rock’ in the eighties with classic albums on local indie imprint Twin/Tone (QRO deluxe edition reviews), before graduating to major label status for the second half of their impressive discography (QRO deluxe edition reviews).
They called it quits in 1991, well after members like guitarist Bob Stinson and drummer Chris Mars had left, with only singer/guitarist Paul Westerberg and bassist Tommy Stinson remaining from the original line-up. Westerberg went on to a successful solo career, while Tommy Stinson (QRO solo photos) has managed to be the ultimate rock ‘n’ roll utility player, working in such outfits as Soul Asylum and even Guns n’ Roses (QRO photos at a festival), plus doing his own solo material (QRO solo album review). Bob Stinson unfortunately passed away in 1995, and more recently his ‘replacement’ Slim Dunlap was hospitalized from a severe stroke – which led to tons of musicians who were influenced by The Replacements to do a series of special, limited edition seven-inches in Dunlap’s benefit.
And most recently, Tommy teamed up with Westerberg and Mars for the Songs For Slim EP (QRO review) – and now a full-fledged reunion (QRO photos of first reunion appearance – though Mars seems to prefer the life off the road – or just still can’t work with Westerberg…)! It was over twenty years ago that The Replacements were one-by-one replaced by their roadies at the band’s final concert in Chicago’s Grant Park (famed as the ‘It’s Not Over ‘Til the Last Roadie Plays’ concert), and last year they returned to that stage (QRO photos at a Chicago festival) – plus, recently guest-spotting on rhythm guitar has been Billy Joe Armstrong (QRO photos of them with Armstrong at a festival)! Even if you’re too young to have caught ‘The Mats’ in their heyday, catch ‘em now, ‘cause you don’t want to be like Art Brut (QRO interview), “How have I only just discovered The Replacements?!?”

Fairly recently, things have been seriously booming for The Head and The Heart (QRO live review). The Seattle alt-folk/pop band (QRO photos outdoors) was signed by Sub Pop (QRO photos outdoors), named their city’s best new band by Seattle Weekly, opened for everybody from Dave Matthews (QRO live review) to Death Cab for Cutie (QRO album review). They’ve since graduated to headlining status (QRO live review) behind last year’s sweet Let’s Be Still (QRO review) – though their crowds won’t (QRO photos at a festival).

Legendary bluesman Charlie Musselwhite (reportedly the inspiration for Dan Ackroyd’s Blues Brother character) teamed up with Ben Harper on last year’s Get Up! and on tour (QRO photos together at a festival) – but also plays solo.
Mixing indie and folk is the well-traveled festival mainstay Gregory Alan Isakov.
One of the iconic rock groups of the sixties and seventies, Big Star may have invented power-pop but never quite got their due. That was changing more recently as countless acts cited the group & frontman Alex Chilton (though the best name-check is still “Alex Chilton” by The Replacements – see above), and the group was scheduled to reunite at South-by-Southwest 2010 (QRO recap) when Chilton suddenly and tragically died on the first day of the festival.
What had been planned to be a reunion quickly turned into a tribute – and has kept on going. Artists from Peter Buck & Mike Mills of R.E.M. (QRO album review) to M. Ward (QRO album review) to Pat Sansone (of Wilco – QRO live review) to Replacements’ own Tommy Stinson (QRO album review) have joined the tribute ensemble around Big Star drummer/only living member Jody Stephens, who have toured everywhere from SXSW 2012 (QRO photos at SXSW 2012) to London’s Barbican to Barcelona’s Primavera to now Bumbershoot.
Back when Hispanic culture was virtually unknown in mainstream America, Los Lobos introduced gringos to Chicano rock, which draws from all sides of all borders, from traditional boleros to gospel to rock ‘n’ roll. They’ve evolved from touring in a Dodge van to playing the White House, yet have stayed true to their roots.

The Brooklyn-by-way-of-Claremont, California act (QRO photos in Brooklyn), We Are Scientists (QRO live review) has had a habit of appearing & disappearing (QRO spotlight on), like after hits like “It’s a Hit’ (QRO video), but returning in 2008 with Brain Thrust Mastery (QRO review), then disappearing again, but came back again, with 2010’s Barbara (QRO review), then away, but now back with this year’s TV en Français (QRO review) and songs like “Dumb Luck” (QRO video) and “Make It Easy” (QRO review). The band’s powerful indie-rock (QRO photos at a festival) has won PhD’s across the country and beyond (QRO photos at a foreign festival), and their live show (QRO live review) is known for singer/guitarist Keith Murray (QRO interview) & bassist Chris Cain’s humorous between-song banter and audience participation (QRO live review), even at festivals (QRO photos at a festival).
Under the moniker of Kishi Bashi (QRO photos at a festival), K Ishibashi is a founding member of Jupiter One (QRO photos at a festival) and has worked with the likes of of Montreal (QRO live review) and Regina Spektor (QRO live review). Wholly different from Jupiter One, Kishi Bashi composes whimsical tunes of psychedelic pop.
In the halcyon days of the early nineties, female musicians were breaking out all over the place, including the four ladies of Luscious Jackson with songs like “Daughters of the Kaos”. The decade/century/millennium ended and so did the band, but three-quarters reunited in 2011 for a PledgeMusic-funded new album, last year’s Magic Hour.
After George Clinton (QRO live review), there is no more important figure in funk than Bootsy Collins. He’s worked with James Brown, he’s worked in Parliament/Funkadelic, he even worked in Deee-Lite (you remember “Groove Is In the Heart”, whether you want to or not), and is a living icon of funk.

This century/millennium has seen a lot of great alt-reunions, but one of the finest has been one of the first, Mission of Burma (QRO live review). The art-punk act was forced to break up over twenty-five years ago, due to singer/guitarist Roger Miller’s tinnitus, they reunited in 2002, seemingly not missing a beat, including putting out four new records & counting, like 2009’s The Sound, The Speed, The Light (QRO review) and 2012’s Unsound (QRO review). Though those records aren’t as good as the classics, their live shows these days (QRO live review) do naturally tend more towards the post-reunion material, like “1001 Pleasant Dreams” (QRO video) & “Man In Decline” (QRO video), but they still do throw down great ‘oldies’ like “Trem Two” (QRO video) and, yes, “That’s When I Reached For My Revolver” (QRO video). But protect your ears, as Miller, singer/bassist Clint Conley, and drummer Peter Prescott – along with ‘new’ tape-loop man, Bob Weston (who replaced original looper Martin Swope when the band reunited – but still uses early-eighties electronics to create the band’s signature live looping) turn it up to eleven & beyond (QRO photos outdoors), especially outdoors (QRO live review outdoors).
The Dismemberment Plan (QRO photos at a festival) blasted through around the turn of the millennium with three post-hardcore records, only to break up. But you can’t keep a good Plan down, and the D.C. band reunited two years ago, and last year their first post-reunion record, Uncanney Valley.

Enjoy the exciting and excitable electro-pop of Capital Cities (QRO photos at a festival), who are coming off playing at the Statue of Liberty (QRO live review)!
North Carolina’s J. Cole (QRO photos at a festival) got notice very quick with his first mixtape, The Come Up, signing to Jay-Z’s Roc Nation label. Two more mixtapes, The Warm Up and Friday Night Lights followed before 2011 debut Cole World: The Sideline Story, which came out at #1 (even if he did lose the Best New Artist Grammy to Bon Iver, prompting the “Who the fuck is ‘Bunny Bear’?” meme…). Last year saw sophomore release Born Sinner, which debuted at ‘only’ #2, but of course rose to #1, so catch this top-selling artist.
Los Angeles’ Foster the People (QRO photos at a festival) came out of nowhere in 2010 with viral hit “Pumped Up Kicks”, followed that up with the Top Ten debut Torches (QRO review). Their listener- and dancer-friendly electronic sounds (QRO photos at a festival) aren’t exactly revelatory, but are sure to set the crowd on fire (QRO live review). They come to Bumbershoot (QRO photos at a festival) behind this year’s release of Torches follow-up, Supermodel (QRO review).

From the hills of Tennessee, Valerie June (QRO photos a festival) was first exposed to music in the church, and expanded her sound into roots-folk and blues while in Memphis, where she was featured on MTV’s $5 Cover, which explored struggling artists in Memphis. That led to the self-releasing artist finally getting a record deal for last year’s Pushin’ Against the Stone, which featured several songs co-written with Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys (QRO album review).
From his days fronting influential proto-punk pop bad The Modern Lovers, Jonathan Richman (QRO photos at a festival) has long been a favorite of that girl you like.

The Provo natives are the kind of band with a singer who’s got a neon-dyed mohawk, got known opening for The Killers (QRO live review), and toured (QRO photos) with My Chemical Romance (QRO photos from that tour). With one of the best debut album of 2010, Forget, produced by Chris Taylor of Grizzly Bear (QRO live review), George Lewis Jr. (a.k.a. Twin Shadow – QRO photos) shot up on the hype meter. Turns out, the ‘80s new wave-influenced pop of the Dominican Republic born musician (QRO photos at a festival) actually lived up to its reputation. Sophisticated melodies and catchy hooks abound, the tracks of Forget easily transitioned from haunting poetics to infectious dance numbers (QRO photos at a festival), and he’s lived up to that level with 2012’a follow-up, Confess, which he tours (QRO live review).
Some nineties bands had their one hit and flamed out, some made it huge, and then there’s Nada Surf (QRO live review), who’ve just been keeping on keeping on. From early hit “Popular” in the nineties to acclaimed records such as The Weight Is a Gift, Lucky (QRO review), if i had a hi-fi (QRO review), and most recently 2012’s The Stars Are Indifferent To Astronomy (QRO review), they’ve kept the quality up (QRO photos at a festival).
Indie-rock reviewers such as Pitchfork have long loved Ridgewood, New Jersey’s Real Estate (QRO live review), including 2012’s sophomore release Days (QRO review) and this year’s relaxed Atlas (QRO review), so see for yourself if they’re right as the band comes to Bumbershoot (QRO photos at a festival).
