Camp Bisco 2011 Preview

This is the tenth anniversary of Camp Bisco, to be held at the Indian Lookout Country Club in Mariaville, New York, and it’s better than ever:

THURSDAY, 7/7

Late night at Grooveshark & Dance Tents – Lotus, Bluetech, Skrillex (QRO photos) & Archnemesis

Disco Biscuits, 9:15 PM, Main Stage A

Skrillex

Cut Copy, 8:15 PM, Main Stage B

The international electro-dance scene has seriously touched Down Under, and one of the biggest acts coming out of Australia these days is Melbourne’s Cut Copy (QRO live review).  Breaking through in 2007 with the acclaimed In Ghost Colours (QRO review), Cut Copy (QRO photos outdoors) followed that up this year with Zonoscope (QRO review).  While some think it’s a step down, no one can argue that their live show is anything les than electric (QRO live review).

The New Deal, 7:15 PM, Main Stage A

Catch them while you can – Toronto’s electronic three-piece The New Deal have announced that this will be their last year together!

Cut Copy

Borgore, 6:15 PM, Main Stage A

Asaf Borger has one of the most unusual backgrounds in dubstep – hailing from the Holy Land, he’s also the former drummer for Israeli death metal band Shabira.

Beats Antique, 5:15 PM, Main Stage B

World fusion electronica act Beats Antique not only fuses styles of music, but also styles of dance, including that of the belly.

The New Deal

Also:

Auto Body, 4:15 PM, Main Stage A

Pimps of Joytime, 3:15 PM, Main Stage B

Afrobeta (QRO photos), 2:15 PM, Main Stage A

FRIDAY, 7/8

Late Night at Grooveshark Tent:

Ghostland Observatory

Austin’s Ghostland Observatory combine electronics, rock, and funk the way only a native of the ‘Live Music Capitol of the World’ would, while ‘keeping it weird’ (QRO review).  They also bring an unmistakable light show.

Borgore

MSTRKRFT

While Sebastien Grainger took the punk side of acclaimed Toronto act Death From Above 1979 (see below) in solo career (QRO album review), the other half of DFA1979, Jesse F. Keeler, went electro-house with new partner Al-P.  He’s also doing the rare double-duty at Camp Bisco.

Late Night at DFA Disco Tent (Dance Tent):

Special Disco Version

The world may no longer have LCD Soundsystem (QRO live review), but main man James Murphy is still running the important dance label DFA, and along with LCD drummer Pat Mahoney, form the DJ tandem Special Disco Version.

Beats Antique

Holy Ghost!

Electro-pop duo Alex Frankel & Nick Millhiser (QRO photos) forms the up-and-coming Holy Ghost! (QRO live review), who have toured with LCD Soundsystem (QRO live review, on tour with Holy Ghost!) and Cut Copy (see above – QRO live review with Holy Ghost!), and recently put out their self-titled debut (QRO review).

Disco Biscuits, 11:30 PM, Main Stage A

JDH & Dave P, 11:00 PM, Grooveshark Tent

Otherwise known as ‘FIXED’, JDH & Dave P are two of the most active DJs and event impresarios in the NYC dance scene.

Afrobeta

Ratatat, 10:15 PM, Main Stage B

New York’s Evan Mast & Mike Stroud form the electronic duo known as Ratatat (QRO photos at a festival).  After putting out a self-titled record & following it up with Classics, the last two full-lengths have kept the simple-and-sweet-name, in LP3 (QRO review) and LP4.  Fun will definitely be had, thanks to Ratatat’s energetic, psychedelic live show (QRO live review).

Alex English, 9:45 PM, Grooveshark Tent

As co-creator of the Friday night ‘Girls & Boys’ party at NYC’s Webster Hall (QRO venue review), Alex English has shared the stage with all the big names in electro-dance.

Ghostland Observatory

Disco Biscuits, 8:45 PM, Main Stage A

Tobacco, 7:50 PM, Dance Tent

Black Moth Super Rainbow (see below) main man Tobacco plays solo at the Dance Tent.

12th Planet, 7:40 PM, Grooveshark Tent

John Dadzie is a Los Angeles dubstep producer and DJ that’s better known as 12th Planet.

MSTRKRFT

Shpongle Live, 7:15 PM, Main Stage B

It’s rare even in their native U.K. for ambient psychedelic trance – or ‘psybient’ – act Shpongle to play live, and even rarer in the U.S.A.

Four Tet, 6:20 PM, Grooveshark Tent

U.K. post-rock electronic musician Kieran Hebden, also who’s remixed everyone from Andrew Bird (QRO album review) to Radiohead (QRO album review), tours once more as Four Tet, on the back of There Is Love In You, his latest since 2008’s Ringer (QRO album review).

Special Disco Version

Conspirator, 6:15 PM, Main Stage A

Started by The Disco Biscuits’ Aron Magner and Marc Brownstein in 2004, Conspirator has since grown into a full band, with members from such other Camp Bisco as Lotus and The New Deal (see above).

Black Moth Super Rainbow, 5:15 PM, Main Stage B

Mixing electronica, psychedelica, trance, indie, and more is Black Moth Super Rainbow (QRO photos), touring behind the re-release of 2007’s Dandelion Gum, as well as their last original, 2009’s Eating Us (QRO review).  The Pittsburgh act is as comfortable in front of alternative crowds as indie (especially when they’ve got a man in a monkey suit – QRO live review), and so is a perfect fit for Camp Bisco.

Holy Ghost!

Also:

Break Science w/ RJD2 (QRO album review) & Redman, 4:00 PM, Main Stage A

Das Racist (QRO photos at a festival), 3:00 PM, Main Stage B

Easy Star All Stars, 2:00 PM, Main Stage A

Papadosio, 1:00 PM, Main Stage B

Indobox, 12:00 PM, Main Stage A

SATURDAY, 7/9

Late Night at Grooveshark & Dance Tents: Pretty Lights (QRO photos at a festival), Emancipator, Wolfgang Gartner, Paper Diamond

Disco Biscuits, 11:15 PM, Main Stage A

FIXED

The Japanese Popstars, 11:00 PM, Grooveshark Tent

Bursting onto the scene right now is (London)Derry’s Japanese Popstars (that’s Northern Ireland, folks…), recently named ‘Best Live Act’ at the Irish Dance Music Awards – they’ve even got their own brand of Nikes!

Bassnectar, 10:00 PM, Main Stage B

Almost as much of a festival mainstay as Disco Biscuits, Lorin Ashton (a.k.a. Bassnectar) brings the lights live.

Disco Biscuits, 8:30 PM, Main Stage A

Ratatat

Death From Above 1979, 7:15 PM, Main Stage B

For an act that only broke up five years ago, Death From Above 1979’s reunion is actually one of the most anticipated.  It helps that the duo of Jesse F. Keeler (who’s been in MSTRKRFT since the break-up – see above) and Sebastien Grainger (who had his own solo career after the break-up – QRO album review) basically invented the dance-punk/noise-rock scene.  Their initial reunion gig at South-by-Southwest earlier this year (QRO recap) was so mobbed that policemen came in on horses and used mace – won’t be that nuts at Camp Bisco, but expect a wild time (QRO photos at a festival).

Wiz Khalifa, 6:15 PM, Main Stage A

A few years ago, no one had heard of Cameron Jibril Thomaz, or Wiz Khalifa (QRO photos outdoors in 2009) – but then "Black and Yellow" shot to #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, Atlantic Records debut Rolling Papers made it to #2 on the album charts, and he’s just kept on rolling (including, yes, an arrest for marijuana, in the middle of his ‘Waken Baken’ tour…).

Alex English

Neon Indian, 5:15 PM, Main Stage B

Alan Palomo works solo as VEGA (QRO photos at a festival) and recruits a live band as Neon Indian (QRO photos at the same festival), where he’s far stronger (QRO photos with his band), especially outdoors (QRO photos outdoors with band) & at a festival (QRO photos at a festival with band).

Yeasayer, 4:15 PM, Main Stage A

The experimental Yeasayer (QRO live review outdoors) combine electronica, rock, and even tribal sounds, making them sound like the music of the cyberpunk future, multi-cultural in ways you’d never foresee (QRO live review).  They’ve been steadily building since 2007’s All Our Cymbals (QRO review) and the futuristic "2080" (QRO video) & "Wait For the Summer" (QRO video), and managed to beat the sophomore curse with last year’s impressive Odd Blood (QRO review) and songs "Ambling Alp" (QRO video) & "O.N.E." (QRO video).  They’ve also got a fascinating stage presence (QRO photos outdoors), especially at festivals (QRO photos at a festival) – even overseas (QRO live review in the U.K.) & in foreign-speaking lands (QRO photos at a German festival).

Tobacco

Also:

Lettuce, 3:15 PM, Main Stage B

Disco Biscuits, 2:00 PM, Main Stage A

The Hood Internet (QRO photos), 1:00 PM, Main Stage B

Dirty Paris, 12:00 PM, Main Stage A
