Pacific Festival 2011 Preview

Cut Copy, Main Stage, 12:00 AM – 1:00 AM

The international electro-dance scene has seriously touched Down Under, and one of the biggest acts coming out of Australia these days is Melbourne’s Cut Copy (QRO live review).  Breaking through in 2007 with the acclaimed In Ghost Colours (QRO review), Cut Copy (QRO photos outdoors) followed that up this year with Zonoscope (QRO review).  While some think it’s a step down, no one can argue that their live show is anything les than electric (QRO live review).

Black Lips, Pacific Stage, 11:25 PM – 12:25 AM

A band better known for their live show than their records, that’s not just because of the relatively unimpressive recorded material like last year’s 200 Million Thousand (QRO review) or this year’s Arabia Mountain (QRO review), but also due to their crazy mishmash of genres and styles on stage (QRO live review).  Atlanta’s The Black Lips’ wild live show includes everything from nudity to fireworks – and live animals (QRO photos at a festival).   California should hopefully let the boys let ‘er rip (QRO photos outdoors), but be rest assured their rabidly loyal fan base will still be crying out for more (QRO photos outdoors at a festival).

Snoop Dogg, Main Stage, 10:45 PM – 11:30 PM

Do you really need to be introduced to Snoop Dogg (QRO photos at a festival)?  Unless you’ve been living on that island from Lost with The Others for the past twenty years, you’ve seen Snoop from his part in Death Row Records’ West Coast rap ascendance with "Gin and Juice" through his legal troubles and ‘less-than-amicable’ split from Death Row to today’s chart-topping success in hip-hop and mainstream, most recently with this year’s Doggumentary.  His high profile and relatively laid-back, but charming, persona these days have also made him ubiquitous on screen, whether cameoing as himself in everything from Showtime’s Weeds to T-Mobile Sidekick ads, or guest-spotting as a rapper from Showtime’s L Word to ABC daytime soap One Life to Live (not to mention having his own reality show, Snoop Dogg’s Father Hood, and filling the quintessential pimp role as Huggy Bear in the big screen remake of Starsky & Hutch).  But Snoop will be returning to rhyming when he’s on stage, as the latest hip-hop star to try to woo the indie-crowd (QRO photos outdoors at a festival).

Zoot Woman, Pacific Stage, 10:00 PM – 11:00 PM

From over in the U.K. come the three men who make up Zoot Woman.  Adam Blake and Stuart Price began ZW as an instrumental electronic outfit, before adding Johnny Blake and going in a new direction.  They were working on new material in the studio this winter for their follow-up to 2009’s Things Are What They Used To Be, so expect new as well as old at Pacific.

The Black Lips

Ghostland Observatory, Main Stage, 9:20 PM – 10:20 PM

Austin’s Ghostland Observatory combine electronics, rock, and funk the way only a native of the ‘Live Music Capitol of the World’ would, while ‘keeping it weird’ (QRO review).  They also bring an unmistakable light show.

Bag Raiders, Pacific Stage, 8:45 PM – 9:55 PM

Fresh off blowing the roof off of Middle America last weekend at Kanrocksas (QRO recap), Sydney’s house duo of Jack Glass & Chris Stracey come to Orange County.

Snoop Dogg

Steve Aoki x Calvin Harris, Main Stage, 8:15 PM – 8:45 PM

Pacific pairs up two of the top DJ-producers in the world, Steve Aoki & Calvin Harris.  Miami’s Steve Aoki (who also performs solo at the Main Stage, 7:20 PM – 8:15 PM) is best known for founding influential electronic/dance label Dim Mak Records, while Scotland’s Calvin Harris (who performs solo at the Main Stage 6:20 PM – 7:20 PM) charted with his Ready For the Weekend and I Created Disco (QRO review).

Zoot Woman

Toro y Moi, Pacific Stage, 7:20 PM – 8:20 PM

One of the ‘big names’ in ‘chillwave’, Chazwick Bundick – a.k.a. Toro y Moi (QRO photos) – had one of the new genre’s touchstone records last year in Causers of This (QRO review), but has since moved to a more rock-oriented sound, especially live (QRO photos).

Phantogram, Pacific Stage, 6:00 PM – 6:55 PM

Barsuk brings Saratoga Springs’ dancetronica act Phantogram (QRO photos at a festival), who have been getting notice less for their debut full-length Eyelid Movies (QRO review) than their enchanting live show (QRO photos at a festival) – but will it work outdoors in the afternoon (QRO photos outdoors at a festival)?

Ghostland Observatory

!!!, Main Stage, 5:00 PM – 6:00 PM

Sacramento dance-punk act !!! (QRO photos) – pronounced ‘chk chk chk’ – were seriously blowing people away a few years ago (QRO live review) with Myth Takes (QRO review), then seemingly disappeared, but are back (QRO live review), and though last year’s Strange Weather, Isn’t It (QRO review) doesn’t stand out in today’s saturated dance-punk scene, the band still knows how to liven it up live (QRO live review outdoors), even at festivals (QRO photos at a festival).
