June 6, 2017
In 2012, the ever-expanding music festival industry entered a strange and unexpected land: Delaware. Firefly Music Festival happens at The Woodlands of Dover International Speedway in Dover, Delaware, Wednesday-Sunday, June 14th-18th:
WEDNESDAY, JUNE 14th
The Northeast Hub San Feldt, 10:30 PM – 12:00 AM Lawrence, 9:00 PM – 10:00 PM Walker Lukens, 7:30 PM – 8:30 PM New Madrid, 6:00 PM – 7:00 PM – QRO photos at a festival |
THURSDAY, JUNE 15th
Backyard Stage Glass Animals, 10:45 PM – 12:00 AM Out of Oxford and discovered by Adele’s producer, Glass Animals (QRO photos) bring their more mixed indie (QRO photos outdoors) on last year’s sophomore release How To Be a Human Being back to Firefly for the second time in three years. |
EDEN, 9:00 PM – 10:00 PM Ireland’s Jonathon Ng, a.k.a. EDEN, has moved from dubstep to indie-pop. |
K. Flay, 7:45 PM – 8:30 PM A musical aficionado, K. Flay (QRO photos at a festival) seems to know how to do it: producing beats, making rhymes, and playing guitar, piano, and drums. Her inexplicable catchy hooks, and beats are something least expected of a Stanford graduate but has already been deemed the ‘new best thing in hip-hop.’ This year she’s put out her second record, Every Where Is Some Where. |
Also: Pardison Fontaine, 6:30 PM – 7:15 PM Salt Cathedral, 5:15 PM – 6:00 PM |
Lawn Stage Kaleo, 10:00 PM – 11:00 PM In music, Iceland is mostly known for its pioneering and experimental artists (and a number of great festivals on its own), but it’s also got a strong blue-rock scene, like Kaleo (QRO photos), who finally make it to Firefly, after having to cancel last year. |
O.A.R., 8:15 PM – 9:15 PM While most of the band hails from Rockville (in nearby Maryland), Of a Revolution – abbreviated O.A.R. (QRO photos) – all formed at Ohio State University (QRO photos at an Ohio festival), and have gone on to have a successful career in both the mainstream and jam worlds, most recently last year’s career-spanning 20th anniversary compilation XX. |
Also: Maggie Rogers, 6:45 PM – 7:30 PM Wilderado, 5:30 PM – 6:15 PM |
The Coffee House presented by StubHub O.A.R., 10:15 PM – 10:45 PM – QRO photos at a festival Jared & The Mill, 8:30 PM – 9:00 PM Salt Cathedral, 7:15 PM – 7:45 PM The Social Animals, 6:00 PM – 6:30 PM |
The Northeast Hub Short Sleeve Heart, 5:30 PM – 6:30 PM Repeat Repeat, 4:00 PM – 5:00 PM Carverton, 2:30 PM – 3:30 PM The Social Animals, 1:00 PM – 2:00 PM Deal Casino, 11:30 AM – 12:30 PM Trio, 10:00 AM – 11:00 AM |
The Pavilion Gryffin, 11:00 PM – 12:00 AM Anna Lunoe, 9:45 PM – 10:30 PM Crywolf, 8:30 PM – 9:15 PM Elohim, 7:15 PM – 8:00 PM Win and Woo, 6:15 PM – 7:00 PM Young Bombs, 5:15 PM – 6:00 PM |
The Southwest Hub Jared & The Mill, 5:30 PM – 6:30 PM Roadkill Ghost Choir, 4:00 PM – 5:00 PM Fletcher, 2:30 PM – 3:30 PM The Steppin Stones, 1:00 PM – 2:00 PM Owel, 11:30 AM – 12:30 PM The Orphan The Poet, 10:00 AM – 11:00 AM |
FRIDAY, JUNE 16th
Backyard Stage Flume, 12:15 AM – 1:30 AM Bringing electronics from halfway around the world is Sydney’s Harley Streten – a.k.a. Flume (QRO photos at a festival). He’s coming off winning the Grammy for Best Dance/Electronic Album this year for Skin. |
Miike Snow, 9:30 PM – 10:45 PM Stockholm’s Miike Snow (a band, not a person – QRO photos at a festival) got serious notice a few years ago with their combination of indie-pop & electro-dance, especially live (QRO live review). After a break, they’ve now come back (QRO live review) with iii, as they come to Firefly. |
Banks, 7:15 PM – 8:15 PM Los Angeles’ Jillian Rose Banks (QRO photos outdoors) brings her ethereal sonics to Firefly. |
Bob Moses, 5:15 PM – 6:15 PM A duo, not a band, Jimmy Vallance & Tom Howe form electronic act Bob Moses. |
Also: James TW, 3:30 PM – 4:15 PM Alex Wiley, 1:45 PM – 2:30 PM |
Firefly Stage Twenty One Pilots, 10:45 PM – 12:15 AM The somewhat uninspired pop of Twenty One Pilots (QRO photos at a festival) comes back to Firefly for a third time (QRO photos at a festival), now behind 2015’s Blurryface. The record was somehow a hit, including single “Heathens”, which was in the soundtrack to the similarly inexplicably successful Suicide Squad. But people seem to love ‘em… |
Weezer, 8:15 PM – 9:30 PM For a long time, the new output from Weezer (QRO photos at a festival) like 2010’s Hurley (QRO review) and Death To False Metal (QRO review) or the previous year’s Raditude (QRO review) wasn’t up to their nineties classics (and 2008’s red album-covered self-titled – QRO review – couldn’t hold a candle to the blue- and green-covered earlier Weezers – QRO blue Weezer live review – or Pinkerton – QRO deluxe edition review), but they still played those nineties classics like “My Name Is Jonas” (QRO video), “Say It Ain’t So” (QRO video), “Buddy Holly” (QRO video), “No One Else” (QRO video), “Surf Wax America” (QRO video), “Falling For You” (QRO video), and “Dope Nose” (QRO video), which can even lift later pieces like “Islands In the Sun” (QRO video) and “Beverly Hills” (QRO video). And their live show (QRO live review) – especially outdoors (QRO live review outdoors) headlining a festival (QRO photos headlining a festival) – has stayed great (QRO photos headlining a festival). 2014 came Everything Will Be Alright In the End (QRO review), their best record in years & years (QRO Everything live review), then last year another Weezer, the white one (QRO review), another good one (QRO White Album live review) – plus dude, Hurley (QRO photo). They return to Firefly. |
Franz Ferdinand, 6:15 PM – 7:15 PM Playing Saturday Tonight: Franz Ferdinand (QRO review). The Scottish band broke out of their native Glasgow in 2005 with Franz Ferdinand and killer single “Take Me Out”, and even if their studio output since then hasn’t matched up, they’re still a great band live (QRO live review), and come to Firefly (QRO photos at a festival) after 2013’s Right Thoughts, Right Words, Right Action (QRO review) and 2015’s team-up (QRO photos) with art-rock new wave greats Sparks, FFS, but they’ve also got new material all their own (QRO recent live review). |
AFI, 4:00 PM – 5:00 PM Has it really been over twenty years for AFI (QRO live review)? The band has evolved from their early snot-punk Bay Area roots (full-length debut Answer That and Stay Fashionable was produced by Tim Armstrong of Rancid and featured “High School Football Hero” and “I Wanna Get a Mohawk (But Mom Won’t Let Me Get On)”) to hardcore and then post-hardcore, a dark romantic sound and style that saw them attain mainstream success. The band (QRO photos) comes to Firefly (QRO photos at a festival) after this year’s release of their self-titled tenth studio album. |
Judah & The Lion, 2:15 PM – 3:15 PM The “Banjo-booty-poppin music” of Judah & The Lion (QRO photos) comes to Delaware. |
Lawn Stage OK Go, 9:30 PM – 10:45 PM In this YouTube era, Chicago’s OK Go (QRO photos outdoors at a festival) reinvented the music video as the viral video, first with “A Million Ways” in 2005 then even more so the following year thanks to the choreographed treadmill dancing of “Here It Goes Again” (QRO live video), which earned singer/guitarist Damian Kulash an appearance on The Colbert Report – and the whole band (QRO interview) made it to the Report in 2010, in promotion for Of the Blue Colour of the Sky (QRO review). Though Colour wasn’t nearly as good as their videos or Stephen, 2014’s Hungry Ghosts (QRO review) picked up the slack, and OK Go (QRO spotlight on) are an incredible group live (QRO live review), with confetti, handbells (QRO video, outdoors at a festival), playing from the crowd, and much more (QRO photos). More recently, they rocked their own TED Talk. |
Also: Lil Dicky, 7:00 PM – 8:00 PM NF, 5:15 PM – 6:15 PM Sir the Baptist, 3:45 PM – 4:30 PM Shaed, 2:00 PM – 2:45 PM Foreign Air, 12:30 PM – 1:15 PM |
The Coffee House presented by StubHub Bob Moses, 9:00 PM – 9:30 PM Judah & The Lion, 6:45 PM – 7:15 PM – QRO photos Shaed, 4:45 PM – 5:15 PM Dreamers, 3:00 PM – 3:30 PM |
The Northeast Hub Louie Louie, 5:30 PM – 6:30 PM Dude Ranch & The Girl At the Rock Show, 4:00 PM – 5:00 PM Animal Years, 2:30 PM – 3:30 PM The Steppin Stones, 1:00 PM – 2:00 PM Ben Coolen, 11:30 AM – 12:30 PM The Lawsuits, 10:00 AM – 11:00 AM |
The Pavilion Benny Benassi, 9:45 PM – 10:45 PM While Italy’s Benny Benassi has yet to match the success of 2002 summer club hit “Satisfaction”, he’s recently be coming close to those heights. |
Also: Alan Walker, 7:15 PM – 8:15 PM Big Wild, 5:00 PM – 6:00 PM Ayokay, 3:15 PM – 4:00 PM |
The Porch Stage Stick Figure, 8:30 PM – 9:30 PM Sofi Tukker, 6:15 PM – 7:00 PM Barns Courtney, 4:30 PM – 5:15 PM – QRO photos Dreamers, 1:15 PM – 2:00 PM |
The Southwest Hub Warm Brew, 5:30 PM – 6:30 PM The Social Animals, 4:00 PM – 5:00 PM Gene Evaro Jr., 2:30 PM – 3:30 PM Future Generations, 1:00 PM – 2:00 PM Carverton, 11:30 AM – 12:30 PM Cold Roses, 10:00 AM – 11:00 AM |
The Treehouse Paul & Julian from Franz Ferdinand, 10:00 PM – 10:45 PM Missio, 7:15 PM – 8:00 PM Klangstof, 5:30 PM – 6:15 PM The Souvenirs, 3:15 PM – 4:00 PM |
Toyota Music Den Foreign Air, 8:15 PM – 8:45 PM XXT, 6:15 PM – 6:45 PM Missio, 4:15 PM – 4:45 PM Klangstof, 2:30 PM – 3:00 PM Hamish Anderson, 1:15 PM – 1:45 PM |
SATURDAY, JUNE 17th
Backyard Stage Chance the Rapper, 12:30 AM – 1:45 AM Two mixtapes, 2012’s 10 Day and 2013’s Acid Rap, have launched Chicago’s own Chance the Rapper (QRO photos at a festival) into the big time (like an endearing Kit Kat commercial, and his Chicago-sponsored South-by-Southwest showcase in 2015 was shut down due to massive overcrowding – QRO recap). He comes back to Delaware (QRO photos) to headline Firefly (QRO photos at a festival) behind his latest collaboration, last year’s team-up with Jeremih, Merry Christmas Lil’ Mama, and his Grammy-winning mixtape, Coloring Book. Book was the first streaming-only album ever to get a Grammy nomination, let alone a win – oh, and he also won the Grammys for Best New Artist and Best Rap Performance! |
Galantis, 9:45 PM – 11:00 PM Swedish dance DJ duo Linus Eklöw and Christian Karlsson combine as Galantis (QRO photos at a festival), who’ve had hits such as “Runaway (U & I)”, last year’s “No Money”, and redoing early internet hit “Peanut Butter Jelly”. |
Wale, 7:30 PM – 8:30 PM Since his discovery by superstar producer Mark Ronson, things have gone very well for D.C. rapper Wale, with mixtapes, collaborations, and even regular ol’ studio albums. |
Also: Daya, 5:45 PM – 6:30 PM Goody Grace, 3:45 PM – 4:45 PM Muna, 2:00 PM – 2:45 PM – QRO photos Taylor Bennett, 12:45 PM – 1:30 PM |
Firefly Stage The Weeknd, 11:00 PM – 12:30 AM Headlining Saturday at Firefly is Toronto’s hip-hop phenom The Weekend (QRO photos at a festival). He comes down to Delaware (QRO photos at a festival) after last year’s Starboy, and after winning Grammys and even appearing on Saturday Night Live (where yes, they did ‘The Weeknd Update’…). |
Bob Dylan, 8:30 PM – 9:45 PM How can any American able to physically make it to a festival have not heard of Bob Dylan (QRO photos)? The folk-rock singer was acclaimed the ‘voice of a generation’ of baby-boomers, and gave more iconic songs than you can shake a stick at – “Blowin’ In the Wind”, “The Times They Are A-Changin’”, “Like a Rolling Stone”, “Highway 61 Revisited”, “Shelter From the Storm”, “Gotta Serve Somebody”, not to mention defining a color with tracks like “Bob Dylan’s Blues”, “Talking World War III Blues”, “Subterranean Homesick Blues”, “It’s All Over Now, Baby Blue”, “Tangled Up In Blue”. And Dylan has kept on going, from controversially ‘going electric’ at one festival to a horrific motorcycle accident and even being born again. And he’s been doing his ‘Never Ending Tour’ for over twenty years now, even inspiring others like in Martin Scorsese’s acclaimed film biography No Direction Home or the most unusual pseudo-biopic I’m Not There, where Dylan-like characters were played by everyone from the late Heath Ledger to the (female) Cate Blanchett. Oh, and last year he was award the freakin’ Nobel Prize in Literature! Interestingly, he’s not headlining Saturday at Firefly – but that seems to be so that there will be virtually no other performances scheduled against him. So expect all of the festival to catch one of the most important musicians in American history. |
Capital Cities, 6:15 PM – 7:15 PM Enjoy the exciting and excitable electro-pop of Capital Cities (QRO photos at a festival), who return to Firefly after playing the likes of the Statue of Liberty (QRO live review), with word of a new record in the works. |
Also: Bishop Briggs, 4:15 PM – 5:15 PM – QRO photos T-Pain, 2:30 PM – 3:30 PM |
Lawn Stage Kesha, 9:45 PM – 11:00 PM Kesha Rose Sebert has been something of a divisive figure in popular music. She’s had some huge success – at one point her single “Tik Tok” was the best-selling digital single in history, and she’s worked with everyone from Brittany Spears to The Flaming Lips. She’s also been derided as a pretty face, but trashy rapper, currently in a legal dispute with her former producer – even her former stylized name ‘Ke$ha’ was a subject of debate. Regardless, she brings her big show to Firefly. |
The Naked and Famous, 7:15 PM – 8:30 PM From east of the Tasman Sea comes The Naked and Famous (QRO photos outdoors). The New Zealand act (QRO photos) turned heads in 2011 (QRO photos in 2011) with debut Passive Me, Aggressive You, and haven’t looked back (QRO photos). 2013 saw strong follow-up In Rolling Waves (QRO review) getting them a big following stateside (QRO live review), and come to Firefly after last year’s Simple Forms. |
Francis & The Lights, 5:15 PM – 6:15 PM Francis Farewell Starlite brings ‘The Lights’ (both on stage & on computer) to Delaware. His debut, Farewell, Starlite!, finally came out last year – oh, and he’s previously worked with Saturday’s headliner Chance The Rapper (so good chances of a guest appearance, like at Boston Calling last month – QRO recap). |
Also: Magic Giant, 3:30 PM – 4:30 PM Rainbow Kitten Surprise, 2:00 PM – 2:45 PM Mondo Cozmo, 12:30 PM – 1:15 PM – QRO photos |

The Pavilion Cashmere Cat, 9:45 PM – 10:45 PM From cold Norway to hot Delaware summer comes Magnus August Høiberg, a.k.a. Cashmere Cat (QRO photos at a festival). |
Slushii, 7:30 PM – 8:30 PM DJ Julian Scanlan, a.k.a. Slushii, has worked with the big name likes of marshmello, and has found big name fans like Skrillex. |
DJ Jazzy Jeff, 5:15 PM – 6:15 PM West Philadelphia, born & raised, DJ Jazzy Jeff (QRO photos at a festival) became one of the first widely famous DJs, thanks to his nineties work with The Fresh Prince, both in music (classic “Parents Just Don’t Understand”) and his hilarious appearances on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, usually ending with the same clip of Uncle Phil literally throwing him out of the house. Even as The Fresh Prince became leading man Will Smith, Jazz helped usher in a whole new generation of musicians, from Jewel to The Roots to Eminem, and has been scratching records around the world. Also: Steve James, 3:30 PM – 4:15 PM CVBZ, 1:30 PM – 2:15 PM |
The Porch Stage Lewis Del Mar, 8:30 PM – 9:30 PM Rockaway Beach, New York City’s Lewis Del Mar – a duo, not a person (QRO photos) – come to Firefly behind last fall’s self-titled debut & hype. |
Also: Quinn XCII, 6:30 PM – 7:15 PM Sunflower Bean, 4:30 PM – 5:15 PM – QRO photos Kevin Garrett, 2:45 PM – 3:30 PM – QRO photos Handsome Ghost, 1:15 PM – 2:00 PM – QRO photos |

SUNDAY, JUNE 18th
Backyard Stage Dillon Francis, 10:45 PM – 12:00 AM American electronic artist Dillon Francis (QRO photos at a festival) has worked with big name DJs like Calvin Harris (QRO album review) and Diplo (QRO photos), to the point where he’s a big-name DJ all on his very own, headlining the last night of Backyard Stage. |
Phantogram, 8:15 PM – 9:15 PM Saratoga Springs’ dancetronica act Phantogram (QRO photos at a festival) got notice less for their debut full-length Eyelid Movies (QRO review) than their enchanting live show (QRO photos at a festival) – which works outdoors (QRO photos outdoors at a festival), when in the evening (QRO photos at a festival). 2014’s Voices (QRO review) upped their game (QRO photos at a festival), after which they teamed up with Big Boi as ‘Big Grams’ (QRO photos at a festival). But now the Phanto is back (QRO photos), with last year’s strong Three (QRO review). They return to Firefly. |
Nahko & Medicine For the People, 5:45 PM – 6:45 PM “They embrace Bob Marley’s idea of world-‐ bridging, bringing people together to resolve differences. For us, music is a tool to create healing and activate people to change things.” Nahko and Medicine for the People (QRO photos at a festival) expands this sensibility onstage. The band has toured with SOJA, and internationally with Xavier Rudd, and performed at festivals across the globe (QRO photos at a festival). |
Also: Waka Flocka Flame, 3:45 PM – 4:45 PM – QRO photos Rozes, 2:00 PM – 2:45 PM |
Firefly Stage Muse, 9:15 PM – 10:45 PM Devon’s Muse (QRO photos at a festival) are now established as full-fledged mega-stars. The trio reached for true stadium glory with 2009’s The Resistance (QRO review), as their electric bombast, which had already conquered Europe, set its sights on the States, playing Saturday Night Live (QRO Music on Late Night TV) and headlining Madison Square Garden (QRO photos). Yet 2012 was in even bigger, with the gigantic (in every sense of the word) The 2nd Law (QRO review) – not to mention making the official song for the London Olympics, “Survival”. 2015 saw Drones top charts in U.K. & America, and win the Grammy for Best Rock Album. They’re completely suitable to headline Firefly. |
Thirty Seconds To Mars, 6:45 PM – 8:00 PM It would have been easy for pretty boy actor Jared Leto to go the pretty boy actor route (literally played “Angelface” in 1999’s Fight Club, but don’t talk about Fight Club…), but he has done different things, like his Oscar-winning portrayal of a transgender woman in Dallas Buyers Club, to forming 30 Seconds to Mars (QRO live review) with guitarist Tomo Milićević and drummer/brother Shannon Leto. Of course, he only moved into the emo-heartthrob arena, hardly a huge jump, but of course has found huge success and huge crowds of fans (QRO photos). |
Bleachers, 4:45 PM – 5:45 PM Jack Antonoff of fun. (QRO live review) launched his own indie-pop side-project, Bleachers (QRO photos at a festival) only a few years ago, but it has quickly become as well known as his ‘main’ gig, like at Firefly ’14. |
The Strumbellas, 2:45 PM – 3:45 PM The “folk popgrass” of Canada’s The Strumbellas (QRO photos at a festival) comes to Firefly behind last year’s third record, Hope. |
Busta Rhymes, 1:00 PM – 2:00 PM Firefly busts rhymes with Busta Rhymes. Mixing wild style with intricate rapping for a few decades now, Busta is a force on stage – “Woo Hah!! Got You All In Check”! |
Lawn Stage The Shins, 8:00 PM – 9:15 PM The Shins (QRO photos) are back! The Shins are back! The band (QRO live review) that caused Zach Braff (and the world) to fall in love with Natalie Portman in Garden State had one of the most-anticipated & best-received records of 2007 in Wincing the Night Away (QRO review). Then the band (QRO photos) left label Sub Pop, and soon started losing members around main man James Mercer, who eventually put The Shins on hold to work with Danger Mouse as the middling Broken Bells (QRO album review). But Mercer & whoever makes up the rest of The Shins (QRO photos at a festival) came back, reclaiming their indie crown with 2012’s great Port of Morrow (QRO review), and again played big stages (and big shows, like Austin City Limits – QRO live review on Austin City Limits) and big festivals (QRO photos at a festival). Mercer took time off for another, better, Broken Bells record (QRO review), but returned this year for another great Shins record, Port of Morrow (QRO review) and are perfect for Firefly (QRO photos at a festival). |
MisterWives, 5:45 PM – 6:45 PM Catch the excitable, electric indie-pop of MisterWives (QRO photos) as they return to Firefly (QRO photos at a festival). |
Hamilton Leithauser, 4:00 PM – 5:00 PM The ‘wise old men’ of the Brooklyn indie scene have long been The Walkmen (QRO live review), who virtually invented it. They were such staples that, of course, they had to go on an “extreme hiatus” in 2013, with various members starting various other projects. Frontman/singer Hamilton Leithauser has stepped into solo shoes with 2014 solo release Black Hours (QRO review), though he’s since done team-ups, 2015’s Dear God with The Walkmen’s Paul Maroon, and last year’s I Had a Dream That You Were Mine with Vampire Weekend’s Rostam Batmangli. |
Also: Jacob Banks, 2:15 PM – 3:15 PM Secret Weapons, 12:45 PM – 1:30 PM |

The Porch Stage Sir Sly, 7:00 PM – 8:00 PM – QRO photos A R I Z O N A, 5:00 PM – 5:45 PM 888, 3:15 PM – 4:00 PM Nawas, 1:30 PM – 2:15 PM |
