Local Natives

On Thursday, May 27th, Local Natives passed through Portland, coming to a venue on the smaller side by the name of Mississippi Studios.  With the sort of draw that Local Natives have, coupled with a venue like Mississippi, it was easy to see why they sold out the show.

With a full house, Local Natives played just about every song off of their latest album entitled Gorilla Manor.  Their driving rhythms in songs like “Wide Eyes” had the packed house moving and dancing throughout the set.  It is always moving when you can hear the audience singing along to one or two of the bands songs, but it is simply a great show when you can hear the audience singing along to nearly every song of the concert.  Eventually their set ended and as the crowd cheered for more, and like any good band, Local Natives came back on stage to play a couple more songs for their encore set.  They topped off their show with their song “Sun Hands” which was sensational with the added yelling vocals of the entire audience.

When bands tour for long enough, their songs start to wear on them and you can tell that they might not be into their set as much as they once were at one point in time.  With Local Natives, even after incessant touring on the same album, it was clear that their music had not worn on them as much as it should have by now.  They’re still able to get into their music and rock out to their set, which helped encourage more excitement in the audience.  They play the sort of tunes that you can listen to more over and over and still not get tired of.  You can certainly tell that Local Natives can write and perform more timeless songs than other bands in the same genre.
