Jordan Lee has collected quite the alt-folk collective around him as Mutual Benefit (QRO photos).

The ‘Slowcore’ (a term the band actually despises) outfit Low (QRO photos) have had a slow building since their start in Duluth. They got a larger audience when signing to Sub Pop for 2007’s Drums and Guns (QRO review), but didn’t quite achieve all they could on 2011’s C’mon (QRO review). However, last year’s The Invisible Way (QRO review) was a return to form.

Dan Croll (QRO photos at a festival) got notice early (including winning a one-on-one with Sir Paul McCartney!), and comes to North-by-Northeast off this year’s full-length debut, Sweet Disarray.

Somewhere between solo singer/songwriter, pop-star diva, and Ron Jeremy lies Har Mar Superstar (QRO photos). Sean Tillmann (QRO photos at a festival) adopted the persona to underground acclaim, especially in Great Britain, as well as becoming spokesman for Vladivar Vodka and Lynx Deodorant. He’s also written songs for the likes of Jennifer Lopez & Kelly Osbourne, and Britney Spears’ management’s rejection of “Tall Boys” only brought him to make his own version, for 2009’s Dark Touches.

There’s tons of buzz around Brooklyn’s new Speedy Ortiz, who play twice at North-by-Northeast.

After receiving the distinction of ‘Best New Music’ from Pitchfork in 2010 (after playing QRO’s own Northside showcase – QRO recap), Kingston, Ontario’s P.S. I Love You (QRO photos at a festival) tore up their homeland – both with the artfully constructed riffs and spitfire percussion of their live show, as well as with their critically acclaimed recordings. The band’s first album, Meet Me at the Muster Station, swept up mass hype and accolades, with that aforementioned media magnate calling it, “A compact debut that nonetheless feels momentously epic.” In 2012 P.S. (QRO photos at a festival) followed that up with Death Dreams.

Khalif Diouf, a.k.a. Le1f (QRO live review), is known for his unorthodox production styles and being the rare openly gay rapper.

Celebrate the Arab Awakening at NXNE with Omar Souleyman! The Arab/Kurdish musician (QRO photos at a festival) hails from northeastern Syria, a hotbed of today’s brave resistance to the (hopefully) next Mid-East dictator to fall. Thankfully Souleyman’s traditional Middle Eastern music – much of it recorded live at local weddings – has already traveled the world.

Baltimore’s Future Islands (QRO photos) play a darker form of synth-pop (QRO photos at a festival).

Pusha T began as one-half of Clipse with his brother No Malice, but has since headed out on his own, signing to Kanye’s GOOD Music and releasing his debut My Name Is My Name last fall.

Detroit rapper Danny Brown (QRO photos at a festival) earned serious critical acclaim in 2011 with XXX, SPIN’s hip-hop album of the year (QRO photos at SPIN party) – and last year he came out with Old.

Somewhere between noise and pop lies Brooklyn’s Sleigh Bells (QRO photos at a festival). The duo of Derek E. Miller & Alexis Krauss (QRO photos) all of a sudden became the hottest thing out there with debut Treats, including touring with M.I.A. (QRO photos) – and they’ve kept up the heat (QRO live review) in 2012 with Reign of Terror (QRO review), last year’s Bitter Rivals, and their bigger-and-bigger headline dates (QRO live review).

About six years ago, Brooklyn saw the rebirth of fifties fuzz, and one of the leaders of the revival was Crystal Stilts (QRO live review). Drawing as much from the Velvet Underground as anything from the Eisenhower administration, Crystal Stilts (QRO live review) at first impressed with 2008 debut Alight of the Night (QRO review), but have gotten kind of repetitive with 2011’s In Love With Oblivion (QRO review) and last year’s Nature Noir.

The unusual Pizza Underground have had an unexpectedly long life. They parody Velvet Underground songs by remaking them about pizza – and are fronted by Macaulay Culkin?!? Yet they’ve lasted far longer than that slice in your refrigerator, and play three times at NXNE.

Why Shit So Crazy? Comedian Reggie Watts asked that question on 2010’s album, and is still looking for the answer. Improvisational to the point of stream-of-conscious, with music mixed in, Watts rode a high tide of praise (including opening for Conan O’Brien on his ‘Legally Prohibited From Being Funny’ tour). From there he has moved up to his own television series, IFC’s Comedy Bang! Bang!, but amid musical performers brings his stand-up act – that includes live looping.

One of the most successful post-punk experimenters has been Jamie Stewart, a.k.a. Xiu Xiu (QRO live review).

Another experimental musician from a city that has tons of them, New York, Daniel Lopatin is the electronic Oneohtrix Point Never (QRO photos at a festival).

An influential act that’s been a regular at the recent Primavera Sounds across the Atlantic in Iberia in both Barcelona (QRO photos at 2013 Barcelona Primavera Sound) and Oporto (QRO photos at 2013 Optimus Primavera Sound) is New York’s post-punk pioneers Swans (QRO live review). Fronted Michael Gira (QRO solo photos), Swans land in Toronto behind this year’s To Be Kind and 2012’s The Seer (QRO review).

St. VincentAfter the one-and-only Annie Clark (QRO interview) made 2007 her break-out year, both as part of The Polyphonic Spree on The Fragile Army (QRO review) and with her own debut as St. Vincent (QRO photos), Marry Me (QRO review), she followed that up with even-better years (QRO spotlight on), gracing festivals (QRO photos at a festival), charming and surprising crowds with winning humor live (QRO live review), and bringing a stable of new songs (QRO live review). Those new songs, like “Laughing With a Mouth of Blood” (QRO video) and “Actor Out of Work” (QRO video) formed into 2009’s Actor (QRO review), which vaunted her into the even bigger time (QRO photos at a festival), including playing Lincoln Center (QRO live review) and other storied concert halls (QRO photos at a festival) & venues (QRO photos at Royal Albert Hall).

Admittedly, 2011’s Strange Mercy (QRO review) wasn’t quite as good, but then she teamed up with the one-and-only David Byrne (QRO photos at a festival together) for 2012′s Love This Giant (QRO review), and now the holy St. Vincent (QRO photos) comes back with a vengeance this year on St. Vincent (QRO review), and an absolutely stellar live show (QRO photos in Europe), with her platinum grey hair and mannequin moves shining at festivals (QRO photos at a festival) and in the Old World (QRO photos in Europe). A must-see at NXNE ‘14 (QRO photos at a festival).

Some artists toil in obscurity for years, even decades, but Mac DeMarco (QRO photos at a festival) is only just old enough to drink, and already has his debut full-length, Mac DeMarco 2.

As The Tick would shout, “Spoon!!!” Austin’s Spoon (QRO live review outdoors) has been turning heads in the indie-sphere for a while with their trademark indie-rock, but with 2007’s Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga (QRO review) & 2010’s Transference (QRO review), the group (QRO photos at a festival) has launched into the stratosphere, including headlining at New York’s own ultra-upscale Radio City Music Hall (QRO live review). A festival veteran (QRO photos at a festival), including headlining fests (QRO photos headlining a festival), they come to NXNE (QRO photos at a festival the prior month) behind word of a new album this year. Three cheers for “The Underdog” (QRO video)!

Harlem hip-hop act Ratking (QRO photos at a festival) come to North-by-Northeast behind April debut So It Goes.

El-P blew up the Brooklyn rap scene with last year’s Cancer 4 Cure (QRO review of release party), and brought about his team-up with Killer Mike (QRO photos at a festival) for 2012’s ‘Into the Wild’ tour. Mike & P have deepened that connection, working together as Run the Jewels (QRO photos at a festival).
