Osheaga 2013 Preview

In 2010, Montreal’s Osheaga Music Festival made a major statement with one of the best two-day line-ups of any festival in North America (QRO recap).  In 2011, Osheaga upped their game by expanding to a shortened third day (QRO recap).  And last year, the festival expanded again, making that Friday as big as Saturday & Sunday, not to mention expanding the actual festival grounds (QRO recap).  For Osheaga ’13, the festival really couldn’t grow any bigger in size, but has managed to keep the top-tier line-up its become known for at this point.  So head to beautiful Montreal for one of, if not the best music festival in North America, Osheaga, Friday to Sunday, August 2nd to 4th:

FRIDAY, AUGUST 2nd

Virgin Mobile River Stage The Cure, 8:45 PM – 10:45 PM If you’re going to Osheaga, do you seriously need to be told who The Cure are?!? Fronted by the iconic Robert Smith, The Cure were on the leading edge of New Wave in the eighties, basically inventing goth as a form of music – and releasing some of the decade’s most catchy singles as well. You know ‘em, you love ‘em, you came to Osheaga for The Cure (QRO photos headlining a festival).
Vampire Weekend, 6:45 PM – 7:45 PM Overnight successes the world over should take a lesson from Vampire Weekend (QRO photos at a festival). The band went from opening for the likes of White Rabbits (QRO live review, when Vampire Weekend opened) and Tokyo Police Club (QRO live review, when Vampire Weekend opened) in 2007 to massive success after they opened the following year with their self-titled debut. This, of course, earned them (QRO live review) legions of haters, often focusing on their preppy look & history, though others just grew enraged at the music from ‘the whitest band’ (according to stuffwhitepeoplelike blog) being called ‘afro-pop’, and the comparisons with Paul Simon’s iconic Graceland (QRO deluxe edition review). They wisely slipped from view for a while, but returned to Jeff Curtin’s (QRO interview) Tree Fort Studios, faced up to the haters & the sophomore jinx to put out Contra (QRO review) in 2009, and reached #1 in the charts (only the twelfth independently-released record to do so in the last twenty years). They’ve since grown comfortable as headliners and playing the big stage, even played Down Under (QRO live review in New Zealand). Vampire Weekend come back to Osheaga behind this year’s new Modern Vampires of the City (QRO review).
Two Door Cinema Club, 5:00 PM – 5:45 PM Hailing from Northern Ireland, but debuting on French label Kitsuné (QRO photos at a festival in France), Two Door Cinema Club (QRO live review) have made a splash in America with songs like “What You Know” (QRO video) and “I Can Talk” (QRO video), as well with breakthrough debut Tourist History (QRO review) & last year’s follow-up Beacon (QRO review) – so come to da Club (QRO photos at a festival).
Ben Howard, 3:30 PM – 4:15 PM English singer/songwriter Ben Howard (QRO photos in England) channels ‘60s & ‘70s folk, but keeps up with the times (QRO live review) – he’s also got a great cover of “Call Me Maybe” (but will he play it live?…)
Oberhofer, 2:10 PM – 2:50 PM Brad Oberhofer founded his namesake band (QRO photos at a festival) to perform live shows, but it’s turned into a regular gig as things have gotten bigger & bigger for the band (QRO photos outdoors) since releasing debut Time Capsules II last year.

Molson Canadian Mountain Stage Phoenix, 7:45 PM – 8:45 PM There are a precious few bands out there who you can’t understand anyone not loving, and one of them is Phoenix (QRO live review). The Versailles outfit (QRO interview – that’s oddly where all the French indie acts come from…) built and built their indie-pop songcraft throughout this century/millennium (including getting a song on the Lost In Translation soundtrack – and singer Thomas Mars would later marry the director, Sofia Coppola), with greater and greater international success (QRO live review), but broke through into the tops (QRO live review) with 2009’s Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix (QRO review), which saw them win such acclaims as the Grammy for Best Alternative Album – and QRO’s #1 Album of 2009. It’s been a tough wait for the band (QRO photos) to return, but return they have, an in full force, from the new Bankrupt! (QRO review) and big shows (QRO live review) to headlining festivals from California’s Coachella to Catalonia’s Primavera Sound to now their fellow-Francophone Osheaga (QRO photos outdoors).
Ellie Goulding, 5:45 PM – 6:45 PM One of the hottest breakthroughs has been London’s Ellie Goulding (QRO photos at a festival), who went from being unknown to playing the likes of Saturday Night Live (QRO Indie on Late Night TV) and even the royal wedding! She’s been movin’ on up in terms of venue size (QRO photos) & stage size (going from side stage at Osheaga ’11 – QRO photos – to main stage this year), so catch her while you can (QRO live review)! She comes to Osheaga behind last year’s Halcyon (QRO review), so come see “Lights” (QRO video).
alt-J, 4:15 PM – 5:00 PM Among all the overnight alt-successes, maybe no one has done it as quickly or as majorly as alt-J (QRO live review). Also known as ‘∆’ – that’s what you get when press the ‘alt’ and ‘J’ buttons on your keyboard, the indie-more quartet went from playing tiny places at terrible hours in 2012 (QRO photos) to winning their native England’s prestigious Mercury Prize later that year (QRO photos at a U.K. festival), and now come back to America playing much, much larger spaces (QRO photos).

Sennheiser Green Stage Beach House, 8:30 PM – 10:00 PM The guitar-and-keys pair of Victoria Legrand and Alex Scally (QRO photos at a festival) may hail from Baltimore, but there’s a Francophile expanse to Beach House (QRO photos). 2008’s Devotion (QRO review) earned them many fans that felt that way (QRO live review), and 2010’s Teen Dream (QRO review) was shortlisted for ‘albums of the year’. Last year they came out with Bloom (QRO review), and they’ve since been working the festivals, coming to Osheaga for a second time (QRO photos at a Canadian festival). And the sweet sounds work in the bright sunlight (QRO photos outdoors) or the dark of the evening (QRO photos at a festival).
The Gaslight Anthem, 6:45 PM – 7:45 PM The newest band on today’s workingman’s punk wave, New Brunswick, New Jersey’s Gaslight Anthem (QRO photos) borrow from classic punk and more recent predecessors like Flogging Molly (see below) & hometown heroes Bouncing Souls (QRO photos at a festival) – but also from the Garden State’s ultimate shining musical light (no, not Sinatra – not even Bon Jovi…), Bruce Springsteen (QRO live review). Once described as the product of some alternate history of rock, where The Boss embraced his early love of The Clash, Gaslight Anthem (QRO photos in the U.K.) have gone even more Boss-like on their two most recent, American Slang (QRO review) and last year’s Handwritten (QRO review), which have catapulted them up the charts (QRO live review) and into festivals, like Osheaga in 2010 (QRO photos).
Jake Bugg, 5:25 PM – 6:10 PM Catch the latest overnight Brit sensation, young folkster Jake Bugg, who hit number one in his native land with his self-titled debut (QRO review).
Lianne La Havas, 4:10 PM – 4:55 PM English soul singer & multi-instrumentalist Lianne La Havas (QRO photos at a festival) is coming off her debut Is Your Love Big Enough? winning iTunes Album of the Year for 2012.
DIIV, 3:00 PM – 3:35 PM Brooklyn shoegaze outfit DIIV (QRO live review) – previously known as Dive (QRO photos) – come to Osheaga, after releasing debut Oshin (QRO review) last summer.

Galaxie Tree Stage Rich Aucoin, 9:55 PM – 10:55 PM From tiny little Halifax, Nova Scotia, Rich Aucoin brings energy and experimentalism to his dance music, most recently with 2011’s debut full-length We’re All Dying To Live (QRO review). He returns to Osheaga (QRO photos at Osheaga ‘10), thankfully this time playing in the evening.
Diamond Rings, 8:30 PM – 9:10 PM Check out the wild electronics of Diamond Rings (QRO photos), who come to Osheaga after opening (QRO photos) for OMD (QRO photos from that tour).
Caféïne, 7:10 PM – 7:55 PM Xavier Caféïne returns to Osheaga in his native Quebec, behind this year’s New Love.
Palma Violets, 5:45 PM – 6:30 PM Osheaga welcomes a bunch of buzzed-about up-and-coming acts, and maybe nobody’s got more buzz than the garage-psych Palma Violets (QRO photos at a festival). The Lambeth, London band gained a lot of attention from the get-go through social media, Arctic Monkeys (QRO live review) style – though presumably not through MySpace…
The Head and The Heart, 4:30 PM – 5:15 PM Pretty recently, things have been seriously booming for The Head and The Heart (QRO photos at a festival). The Seattle alt-folk/pop band (QRO photos outdoors) was signed by Sub Pop (QRO photos outdoors), named their city’s best new band (QRO live review) by Seattle Weekly, opened for everybody from Dave Matthews (QRO live review) to Death Cab for Cutie (QRO album review), and even played Conan (QRO Indie on Late Night TV)!
Wild Belle, 3:20 PM – 4:00 PM Brother-sister outfit Wild Belle (QRO spotlight on) grew up in Chicago but moved out to – where else? – Brooklyn (QRO photos in NYC). Big brother Elliot Bergmann formed NOMO, but has since teamed up with little sis Natalie (QRO photos). They (QRO interview) made serious waves with hit indie-reggae single “Keep You” (QRO video), getting signed to Columbia for their debut earlier this year, Isles (QRO review). piknic électronik stage A Tribe Called Red, 9:45 PM – 10:45 PM Mixing world music and modern dubstep/hip-hop, Canada’s A Tribe Called Red has three DJs bringing First Nations powwow to the dance club scene.
Baauer, 8:45 PM – 9:45 PM While Henry ‘Bauer’ Rodriguez has been producing bass & electro music for years now, he only recently got big-time notice with his meme-spawning “Harlem Shake”. So expect the “Shake” at Sasquatch! (though QRO would prefer to return of the gone-too-soon Harlem Shakes – QRO spotlight on…).

SATURDAY, AUGUST 3rd

Virgin Mobile River Stage Beck, 9:05 PM – 10:45 PM Beck is back!  Your favorite musical non-conformist (QRO photos at a festival) broke through in the mid-nineties thanks to songs like “Loser”, “Where It’s At”, and “Devil’s Haircut” off of early records Mellow Gold and Odelay (QRO deluxe edition review), mixing white boy funk with indie-rock and experimental – as well also delivering a stripped, soulful folk side to boot.  His last full-length was 2008’s Modern Guilt (QRO review) and 2006’s The Information (QRO review), after which he took off time to work as a producer (such as on Thurston Moore’s Demolished Thoughts – QRO review – and Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks’ Mirror Traffic – QRO review), only releasing a few soundtrack tracks (like writing for the fictional band Sex Bob-omb in Scott Pilgrim vs. The World – QRO soundtrack review).  But he’s finally working on a new full-length & finally returning to the stage (QRO headlining a festival).
Imagine Dragons, 7:05 PM – 8:05 PM From Las Vegas comes indie outfit Imagine Dragons (QRO photos) – they’ve played seemingly every late night show out there (QRO Indie on Late Night TV) off of last year’s debut Night Visions, which shows what having a major label behind you (QRO photos) can do for a new band (QRO photos).
Tegan & Sara, 5:10 PM – 6:05 PM Identical twin sisters Tegan and Sara (QRO interview) Quinn emerged out of Calgary at a young age over a decade ago (QRO spotlight on), and are coming to Osheaga (QRO photos at a festival) behind their seventh record, Heartthrob (QRO review) after a hiatus following the end of their touring behind 2009’s Sainthood (QRO review).  The duo manages to combine both the mature songstress(es) style and today’s indie-rock (QRO live review) – along with some great between song banter (QRO live review).  They come to home to Canada after touring the world (QRO photos at a festival on the other side of the world) – including playing Major League Baseball’s ‘Fan Cave’ (QRO photos).
Flogging Molly, 3:35 PM – 4:20 PM Flogging Molly (QRO live review) is on the leading edge of today’s workingman’s punk rock.  The Celtic tinge to this Los Angeles act (QRO photos) has only grown, with 2008’s produced-in-Eire Float and 2011’s Speed of Darkness reaching new heights in popularity for the genre, as well as bringing it to the wide open air (QRO photos outdoors).  They have become a strong presence on the festival circuit (QRO photos at a festival), as well as their own headlining shows (QRO live review).
The Heavy, 2:10 PM – 2:50 PM Britain’s The Heavy (QRO live review), whose electric neo-soul on 2009’s The House That Dirt Built (QRO review) and last year’s The Glorious Dead (QRO review) makes for a killer live performance (QRO photos outdoors). Also: Raine Maida, 1:00 PM – 1:30 PM
Molson Canadian Mountain Stage Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, 8:05 PM – 9:05 PM With last year’s Wing$, Seattle’s Macklemore & Ryan Lewis (QRO photos at a festival) take on the holy grail of hip-hop, Air Jordan sneakers, making them ultra-revolutionaries in rap – and now they’re hitting the festival circuit (QRO photos at a festival).  Has anyone else ever rapped about thrift shops?…
K-Os, 6:05 PM – 7:05 PM A last-minute fill-in for a last-minute fill-in, K-OS makes up for his one-song, technical problems shorted set at the start of Friday (see above) with a full, main stage set on Saturday.
Stars, 4:20 PM – 5:10 PM 2008’s In Our Bedroom After The War marked a proverbial fork in the road moment for Montreal’s own Stars (QRO photos).  While the band was still pumping out high quantities of admirable, very layered pop songs like “Banquet”, their swooning ballads were a little too close to becoming overindulgent and underwhelming.  With 2010’s The Five Ghosts (QRO review) and now last year’s The North, the band took the road less traveled, proving their pop relevance and then some (QRO photos).  Known for the powerfully energetic shows (QRO live review), Stars are set to mesmerize festivalgoers (QRO photos at a Canadian festival) like they did at Osheaga ‘10 (QRO photos) & ‘07.
Jimmy Eat World, 2:50 PM – 3:35 PM Jimmy Eat World (QRO photos) set the standard for emo-rock in 2001 with Bleed American and “The Middle” (QRO video).  Though have never lived up to that (but did play it & prior Clarity in full – QRO live review), 2010’s Invented (QRO review) and songs like “Movielike” (QRO video) and “Coffee and Cigarettes” (QRO video) still kept the band in the top tier of emo (QRO live review) – though they’ve kept repeating themselves with this year’s Damage (QRO review).
Grouplove, 1:30 PM – 2:10 PM Last year rock collective Grouplove (QRO photos) have had two of the most enjoyable recent hits, “Tongue Tied” (QRO video) and “Colours” (QRO review) from the debut Never Trust a Happy Song (QRO photos at a festival).  Live, they take it to another level (QRO live review), with a massive spectacle (QRO photos outdoors at a festival), and can even persevere in the rain (QRO live review in the rain).  The band (QRO interview) comes to Osheaga (QRO photos at a festival) in the run-up to the September release of their follow-up, Spreading Rumors.
Sennheiser Green Stage C2C, 9:45 PM – 10:55 PM Four-time winners of the DMC World Team DJ Championship, French DJ collective C2C come to Francophone Canada.
Explosions In the Sky, 8:00 PM – 9:00 PM There might not be a more important or beloved post-rock band that Explosions In the Sky (QRO photos at a festival).  The Austin band (QRO photos at an Austin festival) basically introduced the epic, vocal-less concept that is ‘post-rock’ (QRO photos outdoors) into both the indie-sphere (QRO photos at a festival) and the wider world (QRO photos at a European festival) – and providing the theme song to Friday Night Lights – (QRO soundtrack review).  They even made the Top Twenty on the Billboard charts with 2011’s Take Care, Take Care, Take Care (QRO review).
The Breeders, 6:25 PM – 7:15 PM In 2013, Osheaga has jumped on the ‘artist performing their classic albums in full’ with The Breeders (QRO live review) performing their classic Last Splash in full (QRO live review performing Last Splash) for its twentieth anniversary (QRO photos of them performing Last Splash at another festival – which is good because, while Last Splash is still amazing, their later material, like 2008’s Mountain Battles – QRO review – isn’t…).
Tricky, 5:00 PM – 5:45 PM Bristol, England’s Tricky (QRO photos) started with trip-hop underground all-stars Massive Attack (QRO live review) before blowing up on his own, combining black and white Great Britain, hip-hop and high art, to make him another crossover act at Osheaga (QRO photos at a festival).
Lou Doillon, 3:35 PM – 4:15 PM Daughter of director Jacques Doillon and actress/singer Jane Birkin, Lou Doillon is following in the footsteps of her half-sister Charlotte Gainsbourg (QRO album review) by going into music.
Yelawolf, 2:15 PM – 3:00 PM Imagine the movie Winter’s Bone, but with significantly more hip-hop and you’ve got Yelawolf (QRO photos at a festival).  The Alabama native is proud of his ‘bama-ness, and has gained a decent following with his rapid-fire flow.
Wild Nothing, 1:10 PM – 1:50 PM Sun-soaked, fuzzy, dream pop that should go well with a sun-soaked festival. Wild Nothing (QRO live review) is Jack Tatum’s wonderful solo project (QRO live review), and with Nocturne (QRO review), the follow-up to his wonderful first album Gemini (QRO album review) out last year, there’s sure to be plenty of new music afoot (QRO photos at a festival).
Galaxie Tree Stage Angel Haze, 9:55 PM – 10:45 PM Born just across the border in Detroit, her family left her too-tight knit little community and moved to Brooklyn, where she (QRO photos at a festival) has blossomed in hip-hop. But watch out, as she’s coming off a high-profile twitter flame war, including diss tracks, with Azealia Banks – who’s also playing Osheaga 2013… (see above)
We Are Wolves, 8:30 PM – 9:15 PM Originally formed by two visual artists as ‘a post-punk landscape with analogue trees’, We Are Wolves could have gone in any great number of directions.  Thankfully for listeners, the intriguing indie rockers could not have chosen a better road to travel. Their various tugs of war between lo and hi fi, French and English vocals, and dance and Latin styles have been almost as intriguing as their collective results on 2009’s Invisible Violence (QRO review) and this year’s follow-up, La Mort Pop Club.  They’ve played CMJ, SXSW, the Virgin Festival, and now they are bringing their electro garage party back to Osheaga for a third time.  Party on.
Bob Mould, 7:10 PM – 8:00 PM Few at Osheaga (QRO photos at a festival) have been doing it as long as Bob Mould (QRO live review).   From the seminal Hüsker Dü (QRO spotlight on) in the eighties through the nineties’ successful Sugar (QRO deluxe edition review) to his solo work and today’s Bob Mould Band (QRO live review), Mould has been crafting great record after great record, most recently with 2008’s District Line (QRO review), the following year’s Life and Times (QRO review), and last year’s Silver Age (QRO review).  Last year he toured playing Sugar’s amazing Copper Blue (QRO live review) for its twentieth anniversary, but comes to Osheaga (QRO photos a festival) with his whole impressive discography in tow (QRO live review).
Frank Turner, 5:50 PM – 6:35 PM While Frank Turner (QRO photos) began his life in music as singer for the post-hardcore act Million Dead, since that band’s break-up in 2005, the Bahrain-born, Britain-raised artists has turned to political indie-folk.  He’s not a stranger to big stages, however, having opened up for Green Day (QRO album review) at stadium shows in the U.K., and played Osheaga in 2010.

SUNDAY, AUGUST 4th

Virgin Mobile River Stage Mumford & Sons, 9:15 PM – 10:55 PM London’s King’s College & St. Paul’s School are serving as something of the English alt-folk Wesleyan, seeing related acts hit it big.  First there was Noah & The Whale (QRO live review), with graduates of both, then Noah’s female vocalist Laura Marling (QRO live review) went out on her own.  But the biggest hit from there has to be fellow Marling collaborator Mumford & Sons (QRO live review).  Debut Sign No More saw them break through to the mainstream (QRO photos outdoors) with songs like “Little Lion Man”, and last year’s follow-up Babel (QRO review) hit number one on the charts (QRO photos) on both sides of the Atlantic (QRO photos at a European festival).  Oh, they’ve also done such feats as perform on the Grammys with Bob Dylan – and win album of the year at the most recent Grammys.  They also got a Grammy for their tour documentary Big Easy Express (QRO screening review), where they, Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros (QRO spotlight on), and Old Crow Medicine Show toured the southwest by train – a railroad version of their ‘Gentlemen of the Road Stopover’ tours (QRO review).  And now Mumford & Sons (QRO live review) headline Osheaga (QRO photos at a festival), after having had to cancel recent dates after bassist Ted Dwane suffered & recovered from a blood clot in his brain.
Kendrick Lamar, 7:00 PM – 8:00 PM Meanwhile, Honda Stage also a much newer hip-hop hit, Kendrick Lamar (QRO photos at a festival), who got notice with his 2010 mixtape, Overly Dedicated, and lived up to the hype last year with debut, good kid, m.A.A.d city – he’s got no “Fuckin’ Problems” (QRO video).
Big Boi, 5:15 PM – 6:00 PM Still probably best known for being one-half of massively successful duo OutKast, Big Boi (QRO photos at a festival) first showed off his solo skills (QRO photos at a festival) in the Speakerboxx half of OutKast’s 2003’s double-LP, Speakerboxx/The Love Below (the latter half being partner Andre 3000’s own solo debut).  But the hip-hop artist (QRO photos) is out with his own (QRO photos at a festival), fully solo Sir Luscious Left Foot: The Son of Chico Dusty in 2011.
Charles Bradley & His Extraordinaires, 3:45 PM – 4:30 PM The ‘Screaming Eagle of Soul’, Charles Bradley is one of the many great soul singers to emerge from Brooklyn’s DapTone Records, which also brought the world Sharon Jones  & The Dap-Kings (QRO album review) and Budos Band (QRO album review), but Bradley more than stands on his own, from Osheaga ’11 (QRO photos) to recently topped the bill at the one-and-only Apollo Theater (QRO photos)!
Frightened Rabbit, 2:15 PM – 3:00 PM Scotland’s Frightened Rabbit (QRO live review) are at the forefront of the tragic, heartfelt wave coming from England’s neighbor to the north, most recently with this year’s Pedestrian Verse (QRO review) and 2010’s The Winter of Mixed Drinks (QRO review).  They also really put themselves out there on record, but their live show (QRO photos at a festival) also sees them joking (QRO photos), in their Scottish brogue, capture on 2009’s live album, Liver! Lung! FR! (QRO review).  Also a strong festival band, like at Osheaga ’11 (QRO photos), they can even take requests (QRO live review of all-request show). Also: Twin Forks, 1:00 PM – 1:30 PM
Molson Canadian Mountain Stage New Order, 8:00 PM – 9:15 PM New Order formed in post-industrial Salford in the early eighties – after the tragic suicide of singer Ian Curtis, the rest of Joy Division (along with new keyboardist Gillian Gilbert) became New Order (QRO photos at a northern English festival), and became the band that perhaps most defined the eighties dance club sound, as well as influencing the alternative and rave scenes of the nineties while the group was on hiatus. The original trio of Peter Hook, Stephen Morris, and Bernard Sumner returned with the new millennium, but in 2007 Hook permanently departed and Morris & Sumner became Bad Lieutenant (QRO album review).  But now, even as Hook as been redoing Joy Division (QRO Hook live review), Morris, Sumner, and the returning Gilbert have returned (QRO photos) as the iconic New Order (QRO photos at a festival).
The Lumineers, 6:00 PM – 7:00 PM Folk trio from Colorado (QRO photos at a festival), The Lumineers (QRO live review) are known for their songs riddled with cello, mandolin, acoustic guitar, and charming vocals. Their songs are jauntily and nonabrasive tunes with a sing-along vibe (QRO photos). The have been touring (QRO photos at a festival) in support of last spring’s self-titled release.
Silversun Pickups, 4:30 PM – 5:15 PM In 2006, Los Angeles’ Echo Lake music scene blew up in a big way – all thanks to Silversun Pickups (QRO photos) & Carnavas.  In 2009, they finally followed that up with Swoon (QRO review), which charted even higher – and they (QRO live review) come to Osheaga (QRO photos outdoors) behind last year’s Neck of the Woods (QRO review).
Jessie Ware, 3:00 PM – 3:45 PM Jessie Ware (QRO photos at a festival) has been called, “The missing link between Adele, SBTRKT, and Sade,” thanks to last year’s impressive debut, Devotion.
Atlas Genius, 1:30 PM – 2:15 PM From Adelaide down under in Australia comes Atlas Genius (QRO photos).  Singer/guitarist Keith Jeffrey, backed by brothers Michael & Steven (QRO photos), made indie-waves even before debut When It Was Now (QRO review) came out, and have been serious road warriors this year (QRO photos).
Sennheiser Green Stage Hot Chip, 9:45 PM – 10:45 PM Maybe the first band to hit it big in this century/millennium’s electronic indie-dance scene was LCD Soundsystem (QRO live review) – but the second was close friend Hot Chip (QRO photos).  The Warning and “Over and Over” lifted the band (QRO photos) to the big time in 2006, and they’ve kept it going (QRO live review) with Made In the Dark (QRO review), One Life Stand (QRO review), and most recently last year’s In Our Heads.
Misteur Valaire, 8:15 PM – 9:00 PM Quebec’s own Misteur Valaire bring everything from a horns section to turntables in their singular mix.
Father John Misty, 6:50 PM – 7:35 PM While a member of overrated folk outfit Fleet Foxes (QRO album review), guitarist Joshua Tillman found time to do his own solo stuff (QRO album review), but last year he moved to solo full-time as Father John Misty (QRO photos) with Fear Fun.
Holy Ghost!, 5:30 PM – 6:15 PM Electro-pop duo Alex Frankel & Nick Millhiser (QRO photos) forms the up-and-coming Holy Ghost! (QRO live review), who have toured with LCD Soundsystem (QRO live review, on tour with Holy Ghost!) and Cut Copy (QRO live review with Holy Ghost!), and put out their self-titled debut (QRO review) in 2011.  They come to Osheaga on tour (QRO live review) with New Order (see above), behind latest single, “Dumb Disco Ideas”.
Icona Pop, 4:20 PM – 5:00 PM “I Love It” – with that song Icona Pop (QRO spotlight on) jumped from just another Swedish electro-pop act into growing stardom.  Caroline Hjelt and Aino Jawo (QRO interview) having been bringing it live ever since, from small headlining gigs (QRO live review) to massive opening slots (QRO live review).

Galaxie Tree Stage The Neighbourhood, 8:35 PM – 9:20 PM Cali electro indie-pop outfit The Neighbourhood (QRO photos) debuted already on the majors after hit YouTube single “Sweater Weather” (QRO review), with this year’s I Love You on Columbia.
Hollerado, 7:15 PM – 8:00 PM From Canada’s capital just to the west of Quebec, Ottawa’s rock band Hollerado (QRO photos) return to Osheaga (QRO photos at a festival) behind this year’s White Paint.
Dusted, 5:55 PM – 6:40 PM Dusted is the joint effort by British producers Mark bates and Rollo Armstrong (brother of singer Dido).
Hannah Georgas, 4:40 PM – 5:20 PM With only a handful of demos to her name, Hannah Georgas (QRO interview) left the college life behind and took the chance that everyone who plays an instrument mulls over at one time or another.  Thankfully, that chance turned into the chance of a lifetime, with Georgas getting international airplay and touring across the continent (QRO photos).  It would be entirely unfair to attribute any of her success to luck – instead, Georgas owes her new career path to witty lyrics, poppy writing, and a truly undeniable charm.  With that trio in her arsenal, Georgas returns to Osheaga for a second time.
Shovels & Rope, 3:25 PM – 4:05 PM South Carolina folk duo Shovels & Rope (QRO photos) – a.k.a. husband & wife Michael Trent & Cary Ann Hearst – finally found success when they teamed up, and have been getting serious notice this year, including appearances on Late Show with David Letterman and Austin City Limits (QRO Indie on Late Night TV). piknic électronik stage Pretty Lights, 9:20 PM – 10:35 PM Colorado-based producer Derek Vincent Smith (QRO photos at a festival) puts some energy behind his electronic work as Pretty Lights (QRO photos at a festival), with 2009’s Filling Up the City Skies free to download.
