Outside Lands

Come to Golden Gate Park, San Francisco, in the shadow of the iconic bridge, for Outside Lands Festival, Friday-Sunday, August 11th-13th:

FRIDAY, AUGUST 11th

Lands End Stage

Gorillaz, 8:05 PM – 9:55 PM

Once upon a time, Damon Albarn (QRO solo album review) was only known as the singer for nineties Britpop greats Blur (QRO album review). Then came the new century/millennium – and Gorillaz. His team-up with artist Jamie Hewlett fashioned the first ‘virtual band’ – cartoon-esque characters that made up the band, with their own identities, and no relation to any actual musical contributors, as Albarn recruited guest start after guest star.

After 2010’s The Fall (QRO review), Albarn & Hewlett had a falling out, and Gorillaz seemed done. But this year the band has returned in force with the strong Humanz (QRO review), with a new slew of guest stars. The Outside Lands headlining set is one of the few U.S. shows by Gorillaz, so expect guest stars – along with animated likes of Murdoc, Noodle, 2-D, and Russel.
Gorillaz
A Tribe Called Quest, 6:15 PM – 7:25 PM

One of the pioneers of alternative hip-hop in the nineties, A Tribe Called Quest’s importance can’t be overstated. This of course meant that the group didn’t make it to the next millennium, but in 2006 reunited, and last year put out the highly acclaimed We Got It From Here… Thank You For Your Service, their first reunion record – and their last, as during it the making, founding member Phife Dawg passed away. But this has only added to the album’s power, as have numerous guest-stars.
A Tribe Called Quest
Little Dragon, 4:45 PM – 5:45 PM

From chilly-but-beautiful Gothenburg, Sweden comes the chilly-but-beautiful electronic outfit Little Dragon (QRO photos), who’ve collaborated with everyone from Gorillaz to José González, but 2014 put out their own Nabuma Rubberband, their follow-up to 2011’s Ritual Union (QRO review), and have been gracing festivals (QRO photos at a festival) & more (QRO photos at a festival), like Outside Lands ’11 (QRO photos at recent northern California festival).
 Little Dragon
Tove Lo, 3:25 PM – 4:15 PM

Out of Stockholm, Ebba Tove Lesa Nilsson – a.k.a. Tove Lo (QRO photos at a festival) – has written for numerous other artists like Icona Pop, Ellie Goulding, and Hilary Duff, but 2013 hit single “Habits” has made her a leading lady all of her own (QRO photos at a festival).
Tove Lo
Dr. Octagon, 2:05 PM – 2:55 PM

Rapper Kool Keith revives his Dr. Octagon identity at Outside Lands ’17.
Dr. Octagon
Hundred Waters, 12:45 PM – 1:35 PM

Indie-rock outfit Hundred Waters (QRO photos at a festival) first came to notice thanks to great opening slots (QRO photos opening) on tours for the likes Outside Lands 2017’s alt-J (QRO live review, with Hundred Waters) and others, before graduating to headlining. They come to Outside Lands behind a string of singles this year.

Hundred Waters

Sutro Stage

Fleet Foxes, 7:10 PM – 8:20 PM

After the decent Sun Giant EP (QRO review), maybe no band broke out in as big a way in 2008 as Fleet Foxes with their self-titled debut full-length (QRO review) – a breakthrough that earned them (QRO photos at a festival) a fair share of hype-backlash. The Seattle band’s folk hymnals garnered huge popularity (some of which was due to their more engaging live shows – QRO photos). After the whirlwind, the Foxes took some time off, but came back in 2011 Helplessness Blues (QRO review), disappeared again, and now come back (QRO live review this year, playing for television) behind Crack-Up (QRO review). Whether or not you think they’re overrated, they come to Outside Lands (QRO photos two weekends prior at a festival).
Fleet Foxes
Belle & Sebastian, 5:40 PM – 6:40 PM

While everyone raves about all the nineties acts reuniting, pause for a moment to praise great bands from the last century/millennium who didn’t break up, such as Belle & Sebastian (QRO photos outdoors). The Glaswegian outfit’s ‘wistful pop’ has captured hearts for years & years now, with their latest, 2015’s Girls In Peacetime Wanna Dance (QRO review), pretty much saying it all.
Belle & Sebastian
Shovels & Rope, 4:20 PM – 5:10 PM

South Carolina folk duo Shovels & Rope (QRO photos) – a.k.a. husband & wife Michael Trent & Cary Ann Hearst (QRO photos at a festival) – finally found success when they teamed up, and have been getting serious notice (QRO photos at a festival two weekends prior).
Shovels & Rope
Rag’n’Bone Man, 3:00 PM – 3:50 PM

Rory Charles Graham, a.k.a. Britain’s Rag’n’Bone Man (QRO photos at a U.K. festival) comes to Outside Lands after winning British Breakthrough Act and Critic’s Choice Award at this year’s Brit Awards, so come see what they’re talking about across the pond.
Rag’n’Bone Man
Hamilton Leithauser, 1:50 PM – 2:30 PM

The ‘wise old men’ of the Brooklyn indie scene have long been The Walkmen (QRO live review), who virtually invented it. They were such staples that, of course, they had to go on an “extreme hiatus” in 2013, with various members starting various other projects. Frontman/singer Hamilton Leithauser has stepped into solo shoes with 2014 solo release Black Hours (QRO review), though he’s since done team-ups, 2015’s Dear God with The Walkmen’s Paul Maroon, and last year’s I Had a Dream That You Were Mine with Vampire Weekend’s Rostam Batmangli.

Twin Peaks Stage

alt-J, 8:40 PM – 9:55 PM

Among all the overnight alt-successes, maybe no one has done it as quickly or as majorly as alt-J (QRO live review). Also known as ‘∆’ – that’s what you get when press the ‘alt’ and ‘J’ buttons on your keyboard – the indie-more quartet went from playing tiny places at terrible hours in 2012 (QRO photos) to winning their native England’s prestigious Mercury Prize later that year (QRO photos at a U.K. festival), and playing America (QRO photos at a North American festival) at much, much larger spaces (QRO photos). They come to Outside Lands behind third full-length, RELAXER (QRO review).
alt-J
Future Islands, 6:50 PM – 7:50 PM

Baltimore’s Future Islands (QRO photos) play a highly acclaimed, darker form of synth-pop (QRO photos at a festival) as they come to Outside Lands (QRO photos at a festival).
Future Islands
Sleigh Bells, 5:15 PM – 6:05 PM

Somewhere between noise and pop lies Brooklyn’s Sleigh Bells (QRO photos at a festival). The duo of Derek E. Miller & Alexis Krauss (QRO photos) all of a sudden became the hottest thing out there with debut Treats – and they’ve kept up the heat (QRO live review) in 2012 with Reign of Terror (QRO review), 2013’s Bitter Rivals, last year’s Jessica Rabbit, and their bigger-and-bigger headline dates (QRO live review).
Sleigh Bells
Electric Guest, 3:40 PM – 4:30 PM

In 2012, Los Angeles’ Electric Guest (QRO photos in Los Angeles) blew up, including appearing on MTV’s list of ‘Artists to Watch’ – and Outside Lands. Now the, yes, electric band (QRO photos at a festival) returns (QRO live review), behind this year’s sophomore record Plural.

DJ Jazzy Jeff, 5:00 PM – 6:00 PM

West Philadelphia, born & raised, DJ Jazzy Jeff (QRO photos at a festival) became one of the first widely famous DJs, thanks to his nineties work with The Fresh Prince, both in music (classic “Parents Just Don’t Understand”) and his hilarious appearances on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, usually ending with the same clip of Uncle Phil literally throwing him out of the house.

Even as The Fresh Prince became leading man Will Smith, Jazz helped usher in a whole new generation of musicians, from Jewel to The Roots to Eminem, and has been scratching records around the world.

SATURDAY, AUGUST 12th

Lands End Stage

Metallica, 7:55 PM – 9:55 PM

The definition of heavy metal and the most successful band in the genre, Metallica (QRO live review) are pure headliner. The band (QRO photos) that has given us …And Justice For All, the blackest album cover since Spinal Tap, St. Anger documentary (and… LuluQRO review), and split ears worldwide (QRO photos). They (QRO photos) return to headline Outside Lands behind last year’s Hardwired… to Self-Destruct and a suitable epic show (QRO photos at an intimate show).
Metallica
Cage the Elephant, 6:00 PM – 7:10 PM

With hardly a full-length album to their name, Kentucky’s own Cage the Elephant (QRO photos) was snatched up by EMI Records at a low-key SXSW showcase. Following some impressive U.K. airplay, the band packed up and moved to London, where they released their first studio album in 2008. The following two years were a haze of international touring, late night TV shows, festival appearances (QRO photos at a festival) – and preparation for 2011’s Thank You, Happy Birthday, following that up with 2013’s more indie-influenced Melophobia and 2015’s Dan Auerbach-produced Tell Me I’m Pretty (which won the Grammy for Best Rock Album). They have also become a wild festival presence (QRO photos at a festival), like at Outside Lands ‘09. As their blues-y rock infused live show will prove (QRO photos), elephants were never meant to be caged (QRO photos).
Cage the Elephant
Royal Blood, 4:30 PM – 5:30 PM

Embrace the fast-rising blues-garage of Manchester’s Royal Blood (QRO photos at a U.K. festival).
Royal Blood
Warpaint, 3:10 PM – 4:00 PM

The experimental, even psychedelic rock of the four ladies that make up Warpaint (QRO photos) took a while to take hold, but has by now (QRO photos), and they come back to Outside Lands (QRO photos at a festival) behind last year’s Heads Up (QRO review).
Warpaint
Temples, 1:50 PM – 2:40 PM

Despite only starting a few years ago, Temples (QRO live review) have received press attention in their native England after being called the best new band in Britain (QRO photos at a U.K. festival) by the likes of Noel Gallagher. They come to Outside Lands (QRO photos at a festival) after that heat died down a bit, with 2014’s unimpressive psych Sun Structures (QRO review) and this year’s Volcano (QRO review).
Temples
San Fermin, 12:30 PM – 1:20 PM

Brooklyn baroque-pop band San Fermin (QRO photos) come to Outside Lands behind this year’s Belong.

San Fermin

Sutro Stage

The Avett Brothers, 6:40 PM – 7:50 PM

One of the bigger – and better – hits of today’s new Americana (QRO photos at a festival), The Avett Brothers (QRO photos at a festival) won a wide audience with 2009’s fine country of I and Love and You (QRO review), including playing on The Grammys with Bob Dylan, and followed that up in 2012 with The Carpenter (QRO review). Last year’s True Sadness (QRO review) did sort of show a limit to their ability, but their country is a perfect fit for their return to Outside Lands (QRO photos at a festival).
The Avett Brothers
Vance Joy, 5:10 PM – 6:10 PM

From the other side of the world, Melbourne’s Vance Joy (QRO photos) is the rare footballer (that’s soccer to you yanks) turned singer (QRO photos at a festival), who comes to Outside Lands for a second time.
Vance Joy
Dawes, 3:50 PM – 4:40 PM

The up-and-coming Americana indie outfit (QRO photos) that’s come up, Dawes (QRO photos at a festival) hail from Los Angeles’ Laurel Canyon (QRO photos outdoors), out last year with fourth release We’re All Gonna Die – and neither do they (QRO photos). They come back to Outside Lands (QRO photos at a festival) for a third time, after having also served as opener & backing band for Conor Oberst (QRO photos together at a festival).
Dawes
Real Estate, 2:30 PM – 3:20 PM

Indie-rock reviewers such as Pitchfork have long loved Ridgewood, New Jersey’s Real Estate (QRO live review), including 2012’s sophomore release Days (QRO review), 2014’s relaxed Atlas (QRO review), and this year’s In Mind (QRO review), so see for yourself if they’re right as the band comes to Outside Lands (QRO photos at a festival).
Real Estate
Joseph, 1:15 PM – 2:00 PM

Sisters Allison, Meagan, and Natalie Closner form Portland’s Joseph (QRO photos) have been getting serious notice for their folk sound, including at festivals (QRO photos at a festival).

Foxygen, 6:20 PM – 7:00 PM

While they formed back in 2005, Westlake Village duo Foxygen (QRO photos at a festival) only put out their first full-length in 2012, Take the Kids Off Broadway – but have since had many releases, mostly recently this year’s Hang. However, they are best known for the wild, unhinged live shows, with lead singer Sam France climbing stage equipment and more (QRO photos outdoors).

The laid-back comedian has opened for Tapes n’ Tapes, Superchunk and They Might Be Giants (QRO photos from that show), been seen at industry festivals like CMJ (QRO recap), SXSW (QRO recap) & the old McCarren Park Pool Parties (QRO venue review) in Brooklyn. So he’ll fit right in at Outside Lands.

SUNDAY, AUGUST 13th

Lands End Stage

The Who, 7:35 PM – 9:35 PM

You don’t need to be told who The Who (QRO photos at a festival) are. You don’t need to be told to see them close out Outside Lands. Almost the definition of a ‘rock band,’ The Who’s accomplishment’s are legendary, from songs like “My Generation” to albums like Quadrophenia, from defining seventies rock to destroying hotel rooms, from definitive rock opera album Tommy to definitive actual rock opera The Who’s Tommy, from Roger Daltrey’s iconic opening yell to Pete Townshend’s iconic whirlwind strum, from the great, late Keith Moon to the theme songs to every edition of the C.S.I. franchise. They sure play a mean rock ‘n’ roll.
The Who
Lorde, 5:40 PM – 6:50 PM

It’s been fast and furious, the success of Lorde (QRO live review). The New Zealand songstress (QRO photos) is barely out of her teens, but blew up in a huge way in 2013 behind Grammy-winning single “Royals” and Pure Heroine, to should-be-headlining festival status (QRO photos at a 2014 festival). She’s become such a megastar that her actually being Randy Marsh was a season-song story line on South Park (“I am Lorde, yah-yah-yah…”).
Lorde
Young the Giant, 4:10 PM – 5:10 PM

These Irvine natives toiled for years as The Jakes, but when they changed their name to Young the Giant (QRO photos at a festival), things finally took off (QRO photos at a festival), with their self-(new) titled album & TV performances, including at MTV’s Video Music Awards. They’ve since been gracing bigger (QRO photos) and bigger (QRO photos) stages & shows (QRO live review), including festivals (QRO photos at a festival), like Outside Lands ‘13. YtG (QRO photos) come after the release of last summer’s Home of the Strange (QRO review), following 2014’s Mind over Matter (QRO review).
Young the Giant
Bleachers, 2:50 PM – 3:40 PM

Jack Antonoff of fun. (QRO live review) launched his own indie-pop side-project, Bleachers (QRO photos at a festival) only a few years ago, but it has quickly become as well known as his ‘main’ gig. He plays Outside Lands a second time as Bleachers, behind this year’s Gone Now (QRO review).
Bleachers
K.Flay, 1:30 PM – 2:20 PM

A musical aficionado, K.Flay (QRO photos at a festival) seems to know how to do it: producing beats, making rhymes, and playing guitar, piano, and drums. Her inexplicable catchy hooks, and beats are something least expected of a Stanford graduate but has already been deemed the ‘new best thing in hip-hop.’ This year she’s put out her second record, Every Where Is Some Where.
K.Flay
Lee Fields & The Expressions, 12:10 PM – 1:00 PM

Known for their soulful and R&B styled vignettes, Lee Fields & The Expressions is the collective from Brooklyn, NY (QRO photos outdoors in Brooklyn). Drawing inspirations from the likes of Marvin Gaye, Curtis Mayfield, and James Brown (QRO photos at James Brown celebration), it’s as if taking a trip down memory lane to the Motown Era. They have toured across the world so make sure to catch them at Outside Lands (QRO photos in northern California).

Solange, 8:45 PM – 9:35 PM

While originally known as being little sister to Beyoncé (and her fight with her brother-in-law Jay-Z, captured on an elevator camera), Solange Knowles (QRO photos outdoors at a festival) has pipes (QRO photos headlining a festival) and stage presence all her own, as she’s more than proved, like with last year’s A Seat At the Table, and recent high-brow acclaim as well.
Solange
Rebelution, 6:50 PM – 8:00 PM

Bringing some reggae back to Outside Lands is Santa Barbara’s Rebelution (QRO photos in Santa Barbara), who’ve been all over the festival circuit – and three years ago had an over-packed Big Apple show shut down by the FDNY!
Rebelution
Action Bronson, 5:10 PM – 6:00 PM

From Flushing, Queens, Action Bronson moved from gourmet chef to rapper with panache on his 2014 major label debut, Mr. Wonderful. He still keeps his hand in the foodie game thanks to a VICE television show (catch him Sunday at GastroMagic – see below), though has been dogged by his controversial lyrics.
Action Bronson
James Vincent McMorrow, 3:50 PM – 4:40 PM

Irish songwriter James Vincent McMorrow (QRO photos) has been hypnotizing his listeners with his ethereal vocals and timeless melodies. Last year he released third record We Move – and his cover of Chris Isaak’s classic “Wicked Game” was used in the trailer for the sixth season of Game of Thrones.
