Outside Lands 2018 Preview

San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park, right next to the iconic bridge in the iconic city, welcomes Outside Lands Festival, Friday-Sunday, August 10th-12th:

FRIDAY, AUGUST 10th

Lands End Stage

The Weeknd, 8:25 PM – 9:55 PM

Headlining Friday at Outside Lands is Toronto’s hip-hop phenom The Weekend (QRO photos at a festival). He comes over to San Francisco (QRO photos at a festival) after 2016’s year’s Starboy, and after winning Grammys and even appearing on Saturday Night Live (where yes, they did ‘The Weeknd Update’…).
The Weeknd
ODESZA, 6:25 PM – 7:40 PM

Harrison Mills & Clayton Knight managed to put out their debut as electronic duo ODESZA (QRO photos) while still in their senior year back in ’12 with Summer’s Gone, and come back to Outside Lands (QRO photos at a festival) off of 2014’s follow-up full-length, In Return, and big live show (QRO photos at a 2018 festival).
ODESZA
N.E.R.D., 4:55 PM – 5:55 PM

Hip-hop trio No-one Ever Really Dies, a.k.a. N.E.R.D., formed in 1999 between Shay Haley, Chad Hugo, and Pharrell Williams, with hit records like 2004’s Fly or Die and 2008’s Seeing Sounds. They went on hiatus in 2010, various solo projects (most notably Williams, with hits like the Oscar-nominated “Happy”), but reunited for last December’s No One Ever Really Dies, and now hit Outside Lands.
N.E.R.D.
Billie Eilish, 3:35 PM – 4:25 PM

Just try to catch electro-pop sensation Billie Eilish (QRO photos at a festival), who’s turned a lot of heads and hips with her recent single “Ocean Eyes” and EP Don’t Smile at Me. Just watch out for her hoards of screaming female fans (QRO photos).
Billie Eilish
Lauv, 2:20 PM – 3:05 PM

Pop singer Ari Staphrans Leff, a.k.a. Lauv, comes to Outside Lands behind this year’s debut full-length, I Met Your When I Was 18 (The Playlist).
Lauv
Quinn XCII, 1:05 PM – 1:50 PM

Detroit’s Mikael Temrowski mixes a slew of genres as Quinn XCII.
Quinn XCII
Mikky Ekko, 12:00 – 12:40 PM

While he first came to notice when he was featured on Rihanna’s “Stay”, Mikky Ekko (QRO photos) comes to Outside Lands while we wait for his sophomore LP, Fame.

Mikky Ekko

Sutro Stage

Mac DeMarco, 8:00 PM – 9:10 PM

Some artists toil in obscurity for years, even decades, but Mac DeMarco (QRO photos at a festival) hit success when he was barely old enough to drink (and loves to party, even on stage – QRO photos). His latest, This Old Dog, came out earlier this year, and it & a reputation for wild live shows (QRO photos at a festival) back to Outside Lands (QRO photos at a festival).
Mac DeMarco
The Growlers, 6:40 PM – 7:30 PM

From Dana Point in California, The Growlers (QRO photos at a festival) mix major effects with sixties psychedelic rock to make ‘Beach Goth’, as they come back to Outside Lands.
The Growlers
Chicano Batman, 5:20 PM – 6:10 PM

Los Angeles’ Chicano Batman (QRO photos at a festival) first got notice in 2014/5 with Cycles of Existential Rhyme, but last year went full-on Gil Scott-Heron with Freedom Is Free and energetic live show (QRO photos at a 2018 festival).
Chicano Batman
Rex Orange County, 4:00 PM – 4:50 PM

England’s Alexander O’Connor, a.k.a. Rex Orange County (QRO photos), brings his buoyant keyboards & hypnotic vocals to Outside Lands (QRO photos at a festival).
Rex Orange County
Margo Price, 2:45 PM – 3:30 PM

The Fader once called Margo Price (QRO photos at a festival) “country’s next star,” and she’s increasingly becoming it. There’s not a better place to find that out than at Outside Lands, which she comes to after last year’s big and powerful All American Made.
Margo Price
Dermot Kennedy, 1:30 PM – 2:15 PM

Catch the soul-bearing beauty of the impressive new Dermot Kennedy.
Dermot Kennedy
Nick Mulvey, 12:15 PM – 1:00 PM

Originally one-quarter of Mercury Prize-nominated Portico Quartet, Nick Mulvey (QRO photos at an English festival) has since fashioned a career all his own (QRO photos).

Nick Mulvey

Twin Peaks Stage

Beck, 8:40 PM – 9:55 PM

Beck (QRO photos at a festival) is back! Your favorite musical non-conformist (QRO photos at a festival) broke through in the mid-nineties thanks to songs like “Loser”, “Where It’s At”, and “Devil’s Haircut” off of early records Mellow Gold and Odelay (QRO deluxe edition review), mixing white boy funk with indie-rock and experimental – as well also delivering a stripped, soulful folk side to boot. After full-lengths 2008’s Modern Guilt (QRO review) and 2006’s The Information (QRO review), he took off time to work as a producer (such as on Thurston Moore’s Demolished ThoughtsQRO review – and Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks’ Mirror TrafficQRO review), only releasing a few soundtrack tracks (like writing for the fictional band Sex Bob-omb in Scott Pilgrim vs. The WorldQRO soundtrack review) and a ‘song reader’. But he finally delivered a new studio album in 2014 with Morning Phase (QRO review) – and of course it was great. A perfect headliner for this third time at Outside Lands (QRO headlining a festival), he comes after last fall’s release of Colors (QRO review), with his entire impressive career in tow (QRO live review).
Beck
Father John Misty, 6:50 PM – 7:50 PM

While a member of overrated folk outfit Fleet Foxes, guitarist Joshua Tillman found time to do his own solo stuff (QRO album review), but in 2012 he moved to solo full-time as Father John Misty (QRO photos) with Fear Fun, and he comes back to Outside Lands (QRO photos at a festival) behind last year’s Pure Comedy (QRO review). As Aziz Ansari said in Master of None (before his more recent issues), “That’s a hot ticket!”
Father John Misty
Carly Rae Jepsen, 5:15 PM – 6:05 PM

Three words: “Call Me Maybe”. With that song, the third-place finisher of the 2007 season of Canadian Idol (the version where even the Simon Cowell clone is polite) reached massive fame, with what became the best-selling single worldwide in 2012. Carly Rae Jepsen is still a pop star, but one of those alt-Canadian ones – the kind who’d play Outside Lands (QRO photos at a festival).
Carly Rae Jepsen
Perfume Genius, 3:40 PM – 4:30 PM

Seattle’s chamber-pop artist Mike Hadreas (QRO photos) comes to Outside Lands as Perfume Genius (QRO photos at a festival).
Perfume Genius
The Mountain Goats, 2:05 PM – 2:55 PM

John Darnielle has been a prolific producer for over two decades now under The Mountain Goats (QRO photos) moniker, including 2008’s Heretic Pride (QRO review) 2009’s pseudo-biblically-inspired The Life of the World To Come (QRO review), 2011’s All Eternals Deck, 2012’s Transcendental Youth, 2015’s Beat the Champ, and last year’s Goths. And he’s bringing his enjoyable solo live show (QRO live review) to Outside Lands (QRO photos at a festival).

SATURDAY, AUGUST 11th

Lands End Stage

Florence & The Machine, 8:25 PM – 9:55 PM

Known for her yearning vocals and crooning howls (QRO photos), Florence & The Machine (QRO live review) have garnered the reputation of the world’s most renowned indie pop artists (QRO photos). However, their singles “Shake It Out” and “You’ve Got The Love” from 2011’s Ceremonials (QRO review) were only a short glimpse of her haunting soundscape (QRO photos), seen in follow-up How Big How Blue How Beautiful (QRO review). The group (QRO live review) will come to Outside Lands (QRO photos at a festival) after this year’s release of High As Hope (QRO review).
Florence & The Machine
Bon Iver, 6:25 PM – 7:40 PM

Man, have things ever blown up for Justin Vernon – a.k.a. Bon Iver (QRO photos). QRO can remember when he was just the touring guitarist (QRO photos) for The Rosebuds, but after a well-received appearance at CMJ 2007 (QRO recap), he signed to Jagjaguwar and released his stripped solo debut For Emma, Forever Ago (QRO review) – and the rest was history. He appeared on just about every TV show you can throw a stick at, including being interviewed by Stephen Colbert & being mock-portrayed by Justin Timberlake on Saturday Night Live. He’s even worked with Kanye!

After playing to massive crowds (QRO live review) while touring 2011’s self-titled follow-up (QRO review), which earned him the Grammy for Best Alternative Album and Best New Artist (and leading legions of J. Cole twitter fans to ask, “Who the fuck is ‘Bunny Bear’?”…), Vernon set aside the ‘Bon Iver’ moniker for other work/names, like Volcano Choir (QRO live review), The Shouting Matches (QRO album review), and GAYNGS (QRO album review). But in 2016 he returned, with 22, A Million (QRO review), plus his own festival, Eaux Claires (QRO photos at Eaux Claires) – and even more acclaim…
Bon Iver
CHVRCHES, 4:55 PM – 5:55 PM

Scottish electro-pop outfit CHVRCHES (QRO live review) have gotten very big very fast (QRO photos at a festival), before & after the release of debut full-length The Bones of What You Believe (QRO review) – but are fronted by the tiny Lauren Mayberry (QRO photos at a festival) and some giant lights. They successfully followed up Bones with 2015’s Every Open Eye (QRO review), and have Love Is Dead (QRO review) out this year, and return to Outside Lands.
CHVRCHES
Broken Social Scene, 3:35 PM – 4:25 PM

Since being part of the indie-rock ‘Canadian Invasion’ over a decade ago, Toronto’s Broken Social Scene (QRO live review outdoors) have also become one of the most sought-after festival bands (QRO photos at a festival) in the alternative music arena (QRO spotlight on), whether indoors at industry showcases (QRO photos at a festival) – including the at home in Toronto (QRO photos at a Toronto festival) or outdoors at more traditional fests (QRO photos outdoors at a festival), to the point where they’ve headlined (QRO photos headlining a festival). Fronted by singer/guitarists Kevin Drew and Brendan Canning (QRO interview), this giant collective includes The Apostle of Hustle (QRO spotlight on), Andrew Whiteman (QRO interview), musical mad scientist Charles Spearin (QRO interview) of Do Make Say Think (QRO photos at a festival), and a rotating female vocalist spot that’s included Emily Haines (QRO solo live review) of Metric, Leslie Feist (QRO live review), Elizabeth Powell (QRO interview) of Land of Talk, and more. While the previous releases were ‘BSS Presents:’ albums focused on Drew (Spirit If…QRO review) and Canning (Something For All of Us…QRO review), 2010’s Forgiveness Rock Record (QRO review) was a return to the Broken Social Scene (QRO photos outdoors at a festival), and their live show (QRO live review outdoors) has included everything from Forgiveness songs like “Meet Me In the Basement” (QRO video) Spearin’s fascinating Happiness Project (QRO review) to the old ‘hits’ like “K.C. Accidental” (QRO video) and “Fire Eyed Boy” (QRO video) – as well as numerous guest stars (QRO photos).

2017 was a big year for the band (QRO photos at a festival), with Hug of Thunder (QRO review), a packed touring schedule (QRO photos), and more (QRO live review last year) – including more on stage, as there’s gonna be tons for the guest-packed new album (QRO photos at a festival), as they come back to Outside Lands for the first time since the inaugural 2008 edition.

Lands End Stage

Janet Jackson, 8:05 PM – 9:35 PM

Don’t act like you don’t know who Janet Jackson is, and that you aren’t psyched to see her headline Outside Lands ’18. The youngest of the Jackson family, she became perhaps the most successful female artist of the eighties and nineties, with classics like “Nasty”, “Rhythm Nation”, and more. And you know she’s gonna bring a hell of a light and dance show for Saturday night in New York City. Play. Some. Janet. Jackson!
Janet Jackson
Portugal. The Man, 8:10 PM – 7:20 PM

Outside Lands once again draws from very farther up north with Alaska’s Portugal. The Man (QRO photos at a festival). The rambling grunge outfit garnered new fans with 2007 sophomore release Church Mouth (QRO review), and its unhinged alt-rock (QRO live review), though slipped somewhat since then, even while finally playing Europe (QRO photos at a European festival) and becoming a festival favorite (QRO photos at a festival). Their major label debut In the Mountain In the Cloud (QRO review) was more psych-lite, but they still bring it live (QRO live review), and even went Down Under (QRO photos at a festival) after 2013’s release of follow-up Evil Friends (QRO review), hitting both the festival circuit (QRO photos at a 2013 festival) and live gigs (QRO 2013 live review). They come back to Outside Lands (QRO photos at a festival) touring last year’s hit Woodstock (QRO review), which has vaunted them in popularity (QRO photos at a 2018 festival) thanks to big hit, “Feel It Still”.
Portugal. The Man
Janelle Monáe, 4:40 PM – 5:40 PM

The Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter (QRO photos at a festival) nicely crosses between the urban and alternative genres, from signing to Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs’ Bad Boy Record to opening on tour with of Montreal (QRO live review with of Montreal). She has since risen to amazing heights (QRO photos) with 2013’s The Electric Lady, from festivals (QRO photos at a festival) to guest singing on mega-hit single “We Are Young” by fun. and even becoming a face for CoverGirl (QRO photos at a festival).

The result: 2009’s Juno-nominated Pink Strat, which earned the Toronto native spots and just about every ‘Who To Watch’ list, as well as a place on the 2010 Polaris Long List. And their electronica works outdoors (QRO photos outdoors), day or night (QRO live review), even at a festival (QRO photos at a festival). They come back to Outside Lands (QRO photos at a festival) with their great show (QRO live review), off of this year’s Head Over Heels.
