Project Pabst Atlanta 2016 Preview

Pabst Blue Ribbon isn’t just for hipster northerners, and its Project Pabst comes to the hippest of the southern cities, Atlanta, for Project Pabst Atlanta on Saturday, October 1st:

Run the Jewels, 8:55 PM – 9:55 PM, Captain Pabst Stage

El-P blew up the Brooklyn rap scene with 2013’s Cancer 4 Cure (QRO review of release party), and brought about his team-up with Killer Mike (QRO photos at a festival) for 2012’s ‘Into the Wild’ tour. Mike & P have deepened that connection (QRO photos at a festival), working together as Run the Jewels (QRO photos at a festival) for two critically acclaimed records, most recently last year’s Run the Jewels 2, with word of 3 already in the works.

Mastodon, 7:25 PM – 8:25 PM, Captain Pabst Stage

The New Wave of American Heavy Metal gave birth to Atlanta’s Mastodon (QRO photos at a festival), who achieved a commercial breakthrough in 2011’s The Hunter (QRO review), and come home to Project Pabst (QRO photos at a festival) behind their follow-up, Once More Around the Sun.
Mastodon
Charles Bradley & His Extraordinares, 6:40 PM – 7:20 PM, Unicorn Stage

The ‘Screaming Eagle of Soul’, Charles Bradley is one of the many great soul singers to emerge from Brooklyn’s DapTone Records, which also brought the world Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings (QRO live review) and Budos Band (QRO album review), but Bradley more than stands on his own, from festivals (QRO photos at a festival) to hotels (QRO photos at a hotel) to topping the bill at the one-and-only Apollo Theater (QRO photos)!

NOFX, 5:35 PM – 6:35 PM, Captain Pabst Stage

If you don’t want to be all high-minded and serious at a festival named after a beer, go the exact opposite direction with NOFX (QRO photos). The ska-punkers have turned cheeky fart jokes into a musical career for decades now, most recently on 2012’s Self Entitled and 2009’s Coaster (QRO review) – and right before the release of next month’s First Ditch Effort.
NOFX
The Internet, 4:50 PM – 5:30 PM, Unicorn Stage

Syd tha Kyd and Matt Martians of acclaimed hip-hop collective Odd Future (QRO live review) have their own gig, fronting neo-soul outfit The Internet (QRO photos outdoors).
The Internet
Santigold, 3:45 PM – 4:45 PM, Captain Pabst Stage

Formerly known as Santogold (changed due to threat of lawsuit from an infomercial jeweler Santo Gold – QRO live review), Philadelphia’s Santi White (QRO photos) toured with everyone from Coldplay to Kanye West – but coming to Project Pabst Atlanta (QRO photos at a festival) a star in her own right (QRO photos at a festival), behind this year’s 99¢ and stellar live show (QRO photos at a festival), even at festivals (QRO photos at a festival).
Santigold
Titus Andronicus, 3:00 PM – 3:40 PM, Unicorn Stage

Straight outta Jersey comes Garden State pridesters (QRO live review in New Jersey) Titus Andronicus (QRO photos at a festival), who were hitting all fifty hard (QRO photos out-of-state) even before (QRO photos at a festival) the release of their Civil War-inspired The Monitor (QRO review) – though 2012 Local Business (QRO review) was a big of a retread. But they’re not afraid of playing in New York or outdoors (QRO live review outdoors). They come to Project Pabst Atlanta behind last year’s 28-track opus The Most Lamentable Tragedy.
Titus Andronicus
Real Estate, 2:15 PM – 2:55 PM, Captain Pabst Stage

Indie-rock reviewers such as Pitchfork have long loved Ridgewood, New Jersey’s Real Estate (QRO live review), including 2012’s sophomore release Days (QRO review) and 2014’s relaxed Atlas (QRO review), so see for yourself if they’re right as the band comes to Project Pabst Atlanta (QRO photos at a festival).
