After the success of worldwide Pavement reunion tour last year (QRO live review), Stephen Malkmus is now back with a new stunning album this time with his full-time band The Jicks. Mirror Traffic (QRO review) is special for many reasons: first of all it was produced by Beck (QRO album review), the first producer to work with Malkmus since Pavement’s last album Terror Twilight; it also represents a departure from the jammy, psychedelic melodies of Real Emotional Trash (QRO review), and a return to the catchy hooks of his debut solo album and somehow the directness of Pavement last hits.
After a few U.S. dates, the Jicks will play some European shows in November. The band will feature new drummer Jake Morris (ex-Joggers) who replaced Janet Weiss, now busy touring with super-group Wild Flag (QRO album review).
Forget about Pavement sold-out shows and big sized venues. A couple of festivals aside, this time Malkmus will play small venues and entertain hardcore fans with more intimate shows. Expect different set lists every night with tunes from Mirror Traffic, old hits, new songs, and unusual covers, and lots of banters and improvisation in good Jicks tradition.
