Il abanico are originally from Boston? Oh, fuck yeah. It’s a little known fact that QRO was founded in Boston (before going PRESTIGE WORLDWIDE). Our writers & photogs are all over, but there’s definitely a lively contingent that will always have a soft spot for Bay State artists.

Looks like Il abanico is currently based out of Los Angeles. I couldn’t imagine a city more different from Boston, but hey, tension & strife & flux & transition are the bread & butter & jelly & jam of art. So I figure the change of scenery can only work wonders for a band, right? I dig Il abanico — the front-songstress has a Twin Sister-meets-Steffaloo vibe that gels with the world beat lite pop-phonica. Maybe it’s going too far to drop "world beat" though — I mean world beat like Arcade Fire are world beat. Frankly, indie bands are just much more savvy about world music than they used to be back when indie musuc was basically "more emo punk". I’m thinking of Sebadoh and shit like that. Post punk was just a few extra chords per song, plus more wacky lyrics, you know?
