I saw John Wesley Coleman III (a band, although I think it’s the namesake of one individual in the band: Wes) at Crown Liquors in Chicago last night, but I didn’t know I was seeing them. Mixed up Rayon Beach and JWCIII; oh well, they both sounded great. Bought a Rayon Beach EP afterwards and Wes threw in a CD version of his full length Bad Lady Goes To Jail.
The record is pretty tight — grungy garage numbers with southern keys and souped up vocals give it a 13th Floor Elevators kind of glow. The live version of the band indulges in a little more jam type improv, which I enjoy — the album, on the other hand, sticks to more tightly composed pieces. Take your pick — I like the live version more, personally — maybe the band will incorporate more far out jamming in their next release. I’d love to hear it.
