All That Remains : A War You Cannot WinNot for the faint hearted, nor those who want some ‘easy listening’, this album packs a punch from the very beginning.  The intro to the album, the first track itself “Down Through the Ages”, eases you in for the first 15 seconds before Labonte explodes onto the scene with some harsh vocals – with equally hot and heavy guitar riffs from Oli Herbert and Mike Martin.

There’s no denying the melodic effort that emanates from this entire album, from the heavier songs through to the ‘radio friendly’ singles such as “Stand Up” and “What If I Was Nothing” – a track that has been likened to the likes of Five Finger Death Punch through the stylisation of the vocals and melody itself.  There’s sheer talent and raw energy that creates a strong presence from All That Remains and leaves an ever-lasting mark on any listener: be they a fan or hater.

Although they may appeal to the mainstream through the production of the album by Killswitch Engage’s Adam Dutkiewicz, All That Remains create the perfect balance between the different styles of their records.  Allowing newcomers to get acquainted with their style, whilst giving the old fans what they desire.

But, of course, there’s got to be a miss in any good album.  There will always be the one track that seems to stand out more than the others as the weak point which varies from person to person.  For many it is “Calculating Loneliness”, an instrumental number that is quite a drastic change to the other records that accompany it within the album.  Although a nice change and interlude from the harsh vocals, heavy guitar riffs and the ever-energetic drumming, it almost seems to break the pace of the album too much.

All in all, a good album that deserves a listen by all who like to experience the heavier side of rock.
