Crocodiles : Crimes of PassionWhen Crocodiles first emerged from the same pool of friends as No Age (QRO live review) and Dum Dum Girls (QRO live review) with Summer of Hate in 2010, they seemed like a garage-retread, but then more than came into their own the following year in Sleep Forever (QRO review), which effectively married garage and wash.  Unfortunately, Crimes of Passion is a step back, though still an enjoy garage-fuzz step back.

One kind of gets all that one needs to know about Crimes right from the get-go with opener “I Like It In the Dark”.  The catchy, fuzzy garage piece is very enjoyable, if not ultra-inspired.  The enjoyable-but-simple side of garage-fuzz comes through time and again on Crimes, with only a few detours.  “Teardrop Guitar” is improved by pressure, and there are a couple of sadder songs, but it’s the cheer that shines through.  There are moments where Crocodiles do their chosen style to its best, such as “Dark” and especially “Gimme Some Annihilation”, but that only makes other tracks fade in comparison.

Maybe too much was expected of Crocodiles after the step forward in Sleep Forever.  Garage-fuzz is a genre with limits (as acts like No Age & Dum Dum Girls are finding out…), and Crocodiles pushes up against them on Crimes of Passion, but with a smile on their faces.
