Bradford Cox’s Deerhunter have gone many weird and wonderful places, from their initial high wash to lower-fi garage-distort. For Why Hasn’t Everything Already Disappeared?, the psychedelica leans towards the sixties neo-harpsichord, along with other excursions.

There is a definite ‘Beatles going out there’ feel to such Disappeared songs as openers “Death in Midsummer” and “No One’s Sleeping”, particularly the better psych wander “Element”. “Plains” brings Deerhunter’s tropical side, while “What Happens to People” is higher, lighter, and more charming, without being shallow. But there’s also the weird, like the vocoded strange speech right after, “Détournement”, and xylophone & sax sounds “Tarnung”.
After consistently delivering for years now (not to mention Cox’s side-project, Atlas Sound), Deerhunter are not only still here, they’re still finding new places to go.
