Mac McCaughan – Non-Believers

Merge Records/Superchunk's Mac McCaughan puts out a solo album....

Mac McCaughan : Non-BelieversThe first line of Mac McCaughan’s bio will always be that he co-founded Merge Records, North Carolina’s indie-imprint made good. The second line will be that he fronted Superchunk, a quintessential nineties alt-rock band that has had a nice revival. In between, he also had his own project, Portastatic. So did he need to do an out-and-out solo album? Maybe not, but it gives him a chance to get a little more personal on Non-Believers.

This is still Mac McCaughan, so Believers still traffics in catchy indie-rock for the most part on songs like “Our Way Free”, single “Box Batteries”, “Barely There”, and “Only Do” (which turns Yoda’s line into a sweet anthem). But McCaughan also shows a much more wistful side on pieces such as “Your Hologram”, “Lost Again”, and the unrequited “Mystery Flu”.

Non-Believers isn’t going to change the first few lines on Mac McCaughan’s bio (or obit), but is a nice new addition to an accomplished musician.
