Maxïmo Park : The National Health In the U.K., Maxïmo Park are known for mixing Brit-pop and Brit-rock, yet newest record The National Health opens with soft piano ballad “When I Was Wild” – but don’t let that fool you.  Starting with the subsequent title track, Maxïmo are, if anything, quicker than even prior record, Quicken the Heart.

Maxïmo Park are neither as energetic as classic Brit-popsters Blur, nor as bombastic as classic Brit-rockers Oasis – instead, they’re actually a little more like another hugely famous Brit-act, Coldplay (QRO album review), in that they mix both with some wrought emotion on The National Health.  Sometimes overwrought (“The Undercurrents”), but other times the balance of the three is just right (the bolder “This Is What Becomes of the Brokenhearted”).  Their advantage over Coldplay and the like is both Maxïmo’s pop tendencies (“Until the Earth Would Open”), though it can veer into over-pop Kooks (QRO live review) territory (“Wolf Among Men”), and also their rock-speed on Health (“The National Health”).

Though they might never break out stateside (naming your record after the N.H.S. probably doesn’t help in Obamacare America…), Maxïmo Park are coming close to putting all the Brit- suffix styles together.
