Metric : Art of Doubt

More

Metric very ably climbed the indie-rock ladder with their electronic dance touches and compelling frontwoman Emily Haines. Even if Art of Doubt doesn’t expand their universe much, it definitely keeps them up there.

Admittedly, the first few tracks certainly feel ‘been here, done this before.’ Opener “Dark Saturday” has one of Haines’ “X isn’t X” lines, “So dark it ain’t dark,” like the title line to Synthetica’s (QRO review) “Youth Without Youth” (QRO review). But in the middle of the record, the band delivers strongly on what they can do, different quiet-into-loud “Art of Doubt”, “Underline the Black”, and “Dressed To Suppress”. At its best, their electro-rock is true evocation and action.

If Metric don’t reinvent their sound on Art of Doubt, they didn’t need to, and time will certainly make pieces like “Now Or Never Now” a live banger, or closer “No Lights On the Horizon” a touching send-off.
