Poison Idea : The Fatal Erection Years
Poison Idea’s The Fatal Erection Years highlights the group’s greatest moments and never leaves you disappointed.  Southern Lord’s release of The Fatal Erection Years is not the first re-release of the group’s material, but it is the most monumental, covering 45 tracks.  The album can be broken down into four main sections and showcases what the band was known for: raw, powerful, and at times just nasty music.

The album begins with Poison Idea’s 1983 debut Pick Your King, which was known for its creative album artwork featuring Jesus on the front cover and Elvis on the back.  Pick Your King was a short, blast-packed album that brought the band to the forefront of the 1980s hardcore punk scene.  Tracks like “In Your Face” and “Cult Band” came in at under a minute in length, were heavy and in your face raw.

Section two of the album consists of the group’s 1984 Record Collectors Are Pretentious Assholes.  Tracks from this album reveal the group’s move into more dynamic song writing while still holding onto the rawness of Jerry A’s vocals.  Record Collectors Are… is the group’s most notable album of the early years and has been named as a major influence on groups like Pantera, Eyehategod, and many others.

The four compilation tracks were taken from 1985’s Drinking Is Great EP and Cleanse the Bacteria LP.  The tracks “Laughing Boy”, “Typical”, “Die On Your Knees”, and “I Got A Right” continue to showcase the band’s ability to write hard-in-your-face, energetic and progressive music.

Wrapping up the album is the cream of the crop – live tracks from the group’s performance at the Met in Portland, Oregon.  These tracks have been remastered and restored by Jack Control and he does a fantastic job cleaning up the audio yet preserving the energy of the show.  For fans of Poison Idea, who may have not had the chance to see them in the 80s or before the death of Tom Roberts, this is as close as you are going to get to the true power of what the band brought on-stage.

Overall, for fans of Poison Idea or of hardcore punk in general you will want to pick up this album.
