Santana : Shapeshifter It’s not a Santana album.  It’s a jazz album.  Don’t let anybody tell you different.  After his last project, Guitar Heaven, this collection of instrumentals is a huge disappointment.  Carlos Santana seems to bounce back and forth between understanding exactly what his fans want and having absolutely no idea what he’s doing.  This is especially disappointing when you consider how beloved he is by nearly everyone.

Admittedly, as far as jazz content goes, this album is actually fantastic.  Anyone who’s a fan of smooth jazz is going to enjoy this album.  Even tracks like "Nomad", which appears to be an attempt to pour a little rock and roll into the mix, hold true to Santana’s unparalleled ability to tastefully arrange a song.  Unfortunately, if you purchase this album with the intention of hearing what you’ve come to understand as Carlos Santana, you’re going to walk away unhappy.

Rating such an unprecedented work is tricky.  As a Santana album, it deserves a 3.  As a jazz album, it deserves an 8.  Beyond that, there simply isn’t much to say.
