The Boxer Rebellion : Ocean by Ocean

Maybe no band this side of The National (QRO spotlight on) traffics in tragedy quite as much, or quite as well, as The Boxer Rebellion. The Anglo-indie outfit soars on sadness, and reaches new heights/depths with their latest, Ocean by Ocean.

Unlike many peers from the other side of the Atlantic, The Boxer Rebellion reach for grandeur throughout their Ocean. “Big Ideas” brings higher beauty to a grand call, while the band manages to do their own “Redemption” song, sweet and soft, but still epic. Even singer/guitarist Nathan Nicholson’s lament to his two-year-old son, “Let It Go”, is encompassing in its powerful elegy/opening.

There are some shifts from the big, such as the tropical vibe to starter “Weapon” and disappear-into-the-evening “Let’s Disappear”. But The Boxer Rebellion never lose their tragedy, for a tragically great record.
