Wax Idols : American TragicWax Idols’ American Tragic stays true to the name here, an album that shows in times like these that society is overly tethered to relationships, and in a broader sense reliant on fitting so much pain into so little space.

It is essentially lonely sounding rock with a new wave alternative vibe. The important thing here is that the songs involve suburban relationship clichés without giving in to them. The Jesus & Mary Chain feeling of the album is eerie and well done. The opener, “A Violent Transgression” really emphasizes this, as does “I’m Not Going”.

“Lonely You” begins like a Smiths song but evens out and “At Any Moment” has shades of pop Felt. “Glisten“ is vibrant and black at the same time with the repeating lyric “I don’t wanna know why.” “Seraph” has interesting dark punk vibes and the vocals are a plus for the band with uncommonly controlled emotion. The release continues with the dark theme with “Goodbye Baby” and “Severely Yours”.

To compare this album to other music right now is difficult, because it is more alternative than the more common electronic vibe out there. Comparing it to previous albums is even difficult, as there are no Wire covers like “Sand in My joints” off of Dead Like You, and just less pop sound in general. American Tragic presents a record full of dark and worth a listen for anyone interested in alternative rock. Like My Bloody Valentine, Wax Idols rolls in and out of emotional irony and makes a point not to hold anything back while doing so. Tragedy is a fitting notion for Wax Idols approach and one feels the troubles of life in the forest of the lyrics.
