Wild Sweet Orange show their hearts without getting overwrought on their debut full-length, We Have Cause To Be Uneasy.
Hailing from Birmingham, Alabama (a town better known for producing American Idol winners than indie-rock outfits), the four-piece certainly flirts with the emo demon on Uneasy, but grounds their sound on solid terms.
Uneasy opener “Ten Dead Dogs” straddles the line by giving some weight and press to its pretty flow, while the following “Tilt” is more of a growing piece that never topples over during its explosive choruses. Other quiet, almost alt-folk pieces like “Sour Milk”, “An Atlas To Follow”, and the penultimate “Night Terrors” all possess a touch without being too ‘heart on the sleeve’. Other grander rock tracks like “Seeing and Believing”, “Either/Or”, and “Aretha’s Gold” have force behind them.
Later in Uneasy, Wild Sweet Orange try out some other avenues. “House of Regret” has a nice, weary rhythm (a little too emo in the title, if nothing else…), while the following “Crickets” goes more atmospheric in its emotion. Finisher “Land of No Return” is slow and quiet, but it’s uplifting spirit is almost orchestral in nature. There is a bit of a trouble finding massive, hit-making stand-outs on We Have Cause To Be Uneasy, but it’s also the case there there’s nothing one wants to skip over, even with the variety on the record. As long as the band never gets too hot or too cold, Wild Sweet Orange will remain a tasty treat.
