YACHT is the work of producer/drummer Jona Bechtolt, who until this point, is best known for his work in The Blow.  YACHT’s album, I Believe in You. Your Magic Is Real., reveals his eccentric, digi-bounce sound that is a combination of 80’s-synth, hip-hop, and modern dancetronica. Compared to most of the ongoing dance-punk movement, YACHT is offbeat, and further pushes the standard of beat creation by blending in unusual techno effects.

There’s no doubt there’s something special in YACHT’s music.  From the flickering tribal beat and chill melody that opens the album on "So Post All ‘Em" to the industrial-esque "Women of the World", Bechtolt employs a variety of moods and effects to create a danceable whirlwind album.  But, if there’s any knock on I Believe in You. Your Magic Is Real., it’s that it’s arbitrary, and feels like a disjointed showcase.  There’s so much skill built into each song, there’s a natural detachment.  The production and concept are top-notch, but affect the brain more than the heart.

Even for a dance-based album, the electronics are on a very high level.  "It’s All The Same Price" has a consistent drum machine beat flanked by claps, fuzzy noise, and ADD-driven blips.  Even the understated semi-sour effects on "See A Penny (Pick It Up)" fit nicely.  "It’s Coming To Get You" has a stomping beat laced by an effectively smooth synth.  There are thousand more moments like these on I Believe in You. Your Magic Is Real.

As YACHT, Jona Bechtolt continues to make a name for himself.  This time, it’s with a fresh take on the dance-punk idea while using more electronics than most of his contemporaries.  I Believe in You. Your Magic Is Real. shows off a lot of talent, and while it has a little genius awkwardness to it, for the most part, shines as a demonstration of a variety of skills.
