CMJ 2008 : Day Three Recap

Hangovers, delayed schedules, not delayed schedules, the MTA & more all conspired to making Day Three a big disappointment.  After burning the candle at both ends on Days One (QRO CMJ 2008 Day One recap) & Two (QRO CMJ 2008 Day Two recap), took it easy on Day Three – too easy.  That, plus a whole lot more, caused Thursday to be a day of missed opportunities:

Unfortunately Missed:

-eMusic Pizza Party, 12:00 PM – 2:00 PM.  Too tired, but could have used the free meal – there should be more free food at CMJ!

-Passion Pit, Johnny Foreigner (QRO photos), & Friendly Fires (QRO album review) @ FADER Fort, 4:30 PM – 7:35 PM.  Was just about to head out, but took a nap instead (though FADER Fort – specifically their punch – takes some of the blame…).

-Arms (QRO album review) & The Forms (QRO spotlight on) @ Fontana's, 7:50 PM – 11:00 PM.  Was still asleep when Todd Goldstein (of the Harlem Shakes – QRO spotlight on) had his full-band, 'total Arms experience'.  And The Forms clashed with the one thing I did see.

-White Lies (QRO photos) @ Ben Sherman Store, 8:00 PM – 9:00 PM.

-Matt Keating (QRO album review) @ Rehab (QRO venue review), 8:00 PM – 9:00 PM.

-The Muslims @ Don Pedro's, 8:00 PM – 9:00 PM.

-Physics of Meaning @ Piano's (QRO venue review), 8:30 PM – 9:00 PM.

-Dears @ Hiro Ballroom, 8:30 PM – 10:00 PM.  One of the bigger bands at CMJ playing one of the fancier venues.

-Hooray for Earth (QRO live review), Paul Holmes & The Patients (QRO photos), & Zambri (QRO photos) @ 70 Greenpoint Ave., 8:00 PM – 12:00 AM.  Missed the entire Dopamine records showcase…

-Sam Champion (QRO spotlight on) @ Bell House (QRO venue review), 12:00 AM – 1:00 AM.  The one band did make it out for was The Jealous Girlfriends, all the way out in Brooklyn's Park Slope – only for the show to be late by almost an hour, so had to skip Sam Champion (did see them on Day Two – QRO photos) to make it back to Bowery for…

-Pela (QRO spotlight on) @ Mercury Lounge (QRO venue review), 12:00 AM – 1:00 AM.  However, the F train from Park Slope switched to the A line before heading into Manhattan, so had to go to West 4th stop and take the F train downtown – only to make it to Mercury Lounge literally at the band's final "Hey!"  And who knows when they're playing next…

After missing them at Studio @ Webster Hall yesterday, it was still a relief to see The Jealous Girlfriends – now with singer/guitarist Josh Abbott again (QRO photos of last time, without him).  The band sounded good, very sexy, but the space might have been a bit too big and sparse for them – definitely a band that's better intimate (QRO live review – with Sam Champion, whom "We learned everything from…") or outdoors (QRO live review).  Mixing old with new material, the new stuff sounded a little more rockin', especially Josh's stuff.  Josh and singer/guitarist/keyboardist Holly Miranda play well off each other when grinding their axes, as does Miranda with bassist/keyboardist Alex Lipsen.  Sticking around for the whole set was still worth it for the great closing rendition of "How Now".

Other Notes:

-The Smith St.-9th St. F and G train station stop for Bell House is one of the creepiest stations this side of where they shot that scene in The Warriors.  It's on an elevated rail, so after heading down two flights of non-working escalators, you come out into no-man's land, and have to head under the rail to make it to Bell House – as well as over the Gowanus Canal (and the streetlights are few…).  All the warehouse-like buildings are utterly dead at night, with no signs (except for the ones available for rent), with the only activity being some place where they store buses or something, which you walk among right before Bell House.

-No uptown trains at Bowery after midnight strikes again…
