The Flaming Lips : LiveThe Flaming Lips are the masters of the indie rock spectacle.  The balloons, the cheering sections, the massive video, the singalongs, the hamster ball, the giant hands; the list goes on and on.  Like a Saturday morning kids show on crack, the entire cartoon-ish experience can turn a bubbling, energetic gig into an all-out party.  The Flaming Lips’ surreal anthemic sound was magnified by the highly-absorbent experience surrounding it at Boston’s Bank of America Pavilion, and the Oklahoma space cowboys easily remain near the top of the indie not-to-be-missed live show list.

Cannons of streamers & confetti signaled the start of the show, and as the games began, balloons were tossed around, big hands were swung around, and a giant video screen splashed with Wayne’s face lit up.  “Race for the Prize” sandblasted the audience with energy, and set a high standard for the rest of the show.  “Yoshimi.. Pts. 1 & 2” were up next, during which the audience sang along, followed by an amazing “Vein of Stars”.  “The YYY Song” came next, and everyone was shouting the words after Wayne gave a quick tutorial.  “She Don’t Use Jelly” was also powerfully sung back to the band, and “Do You Realize?” was simply off the charts.

Two encores and a happy birthday song finished up the show, and sent most people, old fans and virgins alike, home spent and satisfied.  The BoA Pavilion was a perfect venue for the Lips’ extravaganza, as the tall tent allowed for huge sound depth and expansive interactivity.  If you haven’t seen them lately, do whatever you have to do to make it happen for what’s possibly the best live show in indie rock.
