Georgia’s own of Montreal came to the 40 Watt in Athens on Thursday, March 5th. This was of Montreal’s album release show for Aureate Gloom, and Kevin Barnes admitted that, once again, this work was autobiographical. Aureate Gloom was made at the time of his marital separation, and he actually appeared sad while singing quite a few songs.
The performance was a rock show set up for of Montreal, who included a few past hits as well as diverse, dynamic songs that visited acid rock, and a couple of songs even touched on country amongst the dance and pop songs. Barnes remained in his original outfit, letting the theatrical performers don the costumes and add a few theatrics sprinkled in about every third song during the first half. As usual in most of Montreal shows, there were psychedelic style videos shown either behind the band or on them as they played. The band was tight and Barnes’ voice was in top shape.
