Trust : Live

Touring behind their debut album (TRST), Trust played Portland’s Roseland Theater on Wednesday, November 14th, in a support role for The Faint.  Trust’s main man Robert Alfons and his band performed eight songs that remained true to the recorded versions.  Alfons’ dark synth music (reminiscent of Clan of Xymox or Crystal Castles – QRO live review) is moody yet has its dance-able moments.  Opening with “Shoom”, the pulsating track with the chiming keys was a great opener, especially for those who may not have heard the band before.

Robert AlfonsAlfons handled the female vocals that are found on the record perfectly.  He can go from a deep croon to a nice falsetto with ease.  His stage presence was similar to Peter Murphy (QRO live review) as he would periodically break out of the shadows and bask under the white spotlight.  He has mentioned that TRST is an “introverted” record, but this night it felt extroverted, in a tentative or shy way.

“Dressed For Space” was a highlight that got the black-clad crowd dancing.  Or at least swaying.  Alfons has a knack for taking a dark song and giving it just the right amount of musical light.  Some of his songs could possibly crossover to more than just a darkwave scene.  Whatever his intent, he is onto something.  Trust ended the night with “Sulk”, a great possible single and the last track on TRST.  Though many people were attending to see The Faint (QRO live review), it appeared that Trust won over some hearts and picked up some new fans.
