We Were Promised Jetpacks

We Were Promised Jetpacks brought all the energy and fire that only the young possess to a near capacity crowd during their one hour set at the Doug Fir Lounge in Portland, Oregon on Wednesday, March 3rd.  In a town where nearly everyone is in a band, WWPJ were a nice reminder of why kids start bands in the first place, and the energy and enthusiasm that ensues when all the pieces fall into just the right places.

Lead singer Adam Thompson’s distinctive vocals come complete with his ever-so-charming Scottish accent.  At times his voice walks a fine line between singing and yelling, yet when his vocal chords are at full capacity and he roars into the microphone, it’s a kinder, gentler sort of yelling.  As Thompson mentioned to the crowd, he’s had a lot of practice yelling and in a contest it’s a pretty sure bet he will win.

We Were Promised Jetpacks playing "A Far Cry" live at Doug Fir Lounge in Portland, OR on March 3rd, 2010:

We Were Promised Jetpacks played the majority of songs from their post-punk gem These Four Walls (QRO review) debut, along with "A Far Cry" off of their new EP, The Last Place You’ll Look.  "A Far Cry" showcases the softer, gentler side of the Jetpacks, but these boys are at their best when they bring the noise.  Standout tracks from the evening included "Quiet Little Voices", "It’s Thunder and It’s Lightning" and "Roll Up Your Sleeves".

One can only hope other bands will follow suit with the Jetpacks omission of the standard encore.  When the night was drawing to a close, the band announced to the crowd that they had two songs left to play, and that they would not pretend to leave the stage simply to reemerge moments later.  It was a breath of fresh air, much like We Were Promised Jetpacks themselves.
