In Brisbane’s intimate Alhambra Lounge on Thursday, March 7th, indie pop-janglers Wild Nothing received an ecstatic welcome for their first performance in Australia.  Kicking off with “Shadow” from their latest, critically acclaimed album Nocturne (QRO review), the Jack Tatum-helmed outfit performed a tight set.  Interweaving tracks from their various releases, the new material played very nicely with the old.

Three tracks in, Tatum took some time out for a little banter, though the story about his encounter with a koala named Byron didn’t play as well as hoped (Australians are pretty blasé about our bizarre fauna).  This didn’t put a dampener on the set however with the band launching into “Golden Haze” from their 2010 Evening Tide EP to the audience’s evident approval.

While plenty vocal from the off, it took the crowd some time to get physical, with scattered head bobbing developing into low-key grooving by mid-set (no doubt prompted by the standout “Only Heather”).

Jack TatumA couple of sinuous solos (most impressive on “Nocturne”) were the exception to the rule, by and large the band played closely to the source material, though Tatum’s own voice was free of the twee affectation that can sometimes grate on their recordings.

Having already won the city’s affection, in their encore performance they earned our love with a sublime rendition of “Head Full of Steam”, originally performed by Brisbane ‘80s indie-pop legends The Go-Betweens, an astute choice that had the audience baying for more.  Closing out with the sweet “Summer Holiday” from Gemini (QRO review), Tatum and co left the stage to screams and well-deserved adulation.
