Note: Luna Lounge closed on April 26th, 2008.  The space has been purchased by Knitting Factory, to be the new location of that venue in March of 2009.

Luna Lounge is located on 361 Metropolitan Avenue, at the corner of Metropolitan & Havemeyer Street in Brooklyn’s Williamsburg.  It lays to the southeast of Music Hall in Williamsburg, and to the south of Sound Fix Records and Union Pool, other Williamsburg venues.  This is the second Luna Lounge; the first was located on Manhattan’s Lowest Side, but was closed down after ten years, as the building was sold and turned into condos in 2005 (a seminal moment in the gentrification of the Lower East Side).  The current Luna Lounge only opened in January 22nd, 2007 with a show by The Comas.

The entrance to Luna Lounge is a large foyer that leads past the box office to the back of the bar area, with the bar itself to the right.  The stage floor is located on the other side of the bar area, separated by the soundboard section.  Both areas feature a few tables and chairs, large but sparse and rather featureless.

While the Lower East Side’s Luna Lounge was a rather beloved institution, no doubt thanks to its lack of a cover (it’s death was only surpassed by that of CBGB’s in terms of bemoaning), Brooklyn’s currently lacks the color and history.  Its acts also tend to not be anybody you’ve heard of, though the prices are low (if you put yourself on their e-mail list, Luna Lounge occasionally sends out coupons redeemable for two free tickets for any show that month).  The location is rather distant if you don’t live in the area, though that does mean lower rents for a larger space than Manhattan venues (and even some in Brooklyn).  Still a place trying to find itself in many ways, here’s hoping it does.
