Monkeytown closed after January 24th, 2010, due to inability to come to terms on a new lease with the landlord.
Monkeytown is located on 58 North 3rd Street, Brooklyn, between Kent & Wythe Avenues, blocks from the East River. Around the corner from Zebulon, it lies three blocks south of Music Hall in Williamsburg and Public Assembly, five blocks north of Death by Audio and Glasslands, and five blocks west of the new Knitting Factory (the old new Luna Lounge).
Really more a restaurant with a performance space in back, a sectioned off dining area is to the immediate left upon entering. Going away from the street, one hits the bar, again to the left. It is only turning left, going along the bar, turning right, and then through a corridor with bathrooms to the right that one reaches the small performance space (which is still segregated by a semi-wall). The actual space is quite small, and unusually laid out in that the band performs on the floor in the middle, with very low cushioned seats & tables (think Japanese tables, but the cushions are so low one can practically lie down) along the four walls.
All four walls are used for video projection, and the Monkeytown backspace is much more designed for video performance than concert; in fact, it is often used for artists debuting videos. The ticket price is quite low, sort of an addendum to the dining experience, as one can order from an impressive ethnic cuisine menu (akin to DROM). A really unusual & interesting place to see any artist.
