Pier 17

St. Lucia

Pier 17 on Manhattan is at 89 South Street, by Fulton & South Street. It overlooks the old South Street Seaport to the direct south. It lies within the Seaport tourist area in southern Manhattan, right upon the East River. It is a new venue, having only opened in 2018, after the whole area was reconstructed post-Hurricane Sandy.

The stage is on the rooftop of Pier 17 (fourth floor). There are two entrances, one for VIPs with an elevator on the northwest side of the building, and another on the south side up escalators, both letting out on the west side of the rooftop. There is also an emergency staircase inside the south end that is opened up when concerts end. Bathrooms and the merch table are located on the third floor.

The rooftop itself is large and wide, with the stage on the north side. There are bars in the southwest corner and along the eastern side; the eastern ones also serve tacos and sliders. There is a VIP area near the west side entrance, and slightly raised area (with benches around it) on the southern side. The stage itself is flanked by two large screens, and Pier 17 has video cameramen who shoot live video for the screens. The whole set-up is definitely classy, from the views of downtown & East River to the drinks. The lighting and sound are excellent, though surprisingly don’t carry down to the street level as much as one might expect (hard to listen for free).

We all miss the old free shows at South Street Seaport, and The Rooftop at Pier 17 is anything but free, leaning distinctly towards the higher-end crowd. But it’s got all the amenities that being high-end brings, from live video to spectacular view. If you’re willing to spend the bucks and the weather is right, can make for a wonderful night.
