Amusement Parks On Fire

Amusement Parks On Fire hit the stage at Crystal Ballroom in Portland, OR promptly at 7:58 pm on Tuesday, September 15th, and the deck was stacked against them right from the start.  Though many consider Portland to be an indie music scene leader, it’s a dirty little secret that opening acts often times get little support, especially at the larger venues in town.  Nonetheless, lead singer Mike Feerick instantly threw himself into the daunting task of trying to connect with the crowd, the majority of whom where easily pushing 45 on a good day, and were clearly present for the headliners, Psychedelic Furs (QRO photos) and Happy Mondays (QRO photos).

Mike FeerickIt was also evident early on that Amusement Parks On Fire would fall victim to the fickle sound system that plagues The Crystal Ballroom from time to time.  Simply put, the sound was just plain awful.  But the band continued to play on and gave it their best shot, not letting the acoustics faze them in the least.  Mike sang his heart out.  The band’s layered sound did manage to get some heads bobbing in the crowd.  When all was said and done, the set clocked in at a mere 28 minutes.  In the end, one felt as though one had just listened to a solitary 28-minute song.  It’s a song one would like to hear again, but preferably in a venue with a quality sound system.
