Benjamin Bridwell was ahead of the pack on the alt-country wave, and since breaking through a decade-and-a-half ago as Band of Horses, he’s been refining his signature sound. Sometimes it could be a bit too polished, but he highlights some of the best of it on Things Are Great.

With a title like that, the upbeat songs are naturally standouts on Great, “Crutch” (QRO review) and “Lights” just the pick-me-ups to think that things actually are great. Even more wistful pieces like the sick loved one of opener “Warning Signs” and looking back at teenage years “Ice Night We’re Having” possess hope. Contrastingly, the slower & sadder pieces don’t have quite the same hook, but there is some of his pedal-twang on “In Need of Repair”.

This far into his successful career, Bridwell isn’t going to change his style (his Band has changed behind him, though), and doesn’t need to. Things Are Great is the great Band of Horses that you’re looking for.
