Be Forest : EarthbeatThe old adage used to be that continental Europe, especially away from the capitols, was ten or twenty years behind on American cultural trends, treating like huge stars people who’d long since become passé in the States (Sex & The City extended that adage to Staten Island – you can also still smoke in both places…).  The end of the Cold War, rise of the EU, and spread of the internet has changed all of that, to the point where even tourist towns that are dead for young people can create great current music: just witness Versailles, which hasn’t been hopping since Louis XIV (or at least the end of World War I), yet has given the world the likes of Phoenix (QRO spotlight on), Daft Punk (QRO album review), and Air (QRO album review).  The picturesque Pesaro on Italy’s Adriatic coast might be perfect for Germans on holiday, but not so much for its own young, yet has birthed Be Forest, who haunt on Earthbeat.

Earthbeat isn’t ‘earthy’, rather ethereal, but provides a beat that is its backbone, from instrumentals like opener “Totem” and mid-piece “Totem II” to the relaxed yet chilling single “Captured Heart”.  Be Forest channel elements of eighties goth/new wave, yet don’t get caught in the undertow of simply recycling; rather, the tracks wash together nicely.
