Brasstronaut : Old World Lies EPSomewhere in between a lot of sounds lies Brasstronaut.  The Vancouver four-piece find themselves at an interesting meeting point between jazz, piano-man, blues, classical, horns and more on their debut EP, Old World Lies.  There are definitely elements of the eclectic instrumental skill of such wordless alt-musicians as Beirut, or Charles Spearin (QRO interview) of Broken Social Scene (QRO spotlight on) and Do Make Say Think.  But there are words, in a relaxed, enchanting blues, like a male, hep-cat Annie Clark (St. Vincent – QRO interview).  Accessible without being identifiable, Brasstronaut is a wonderful conundrum for any music listener.

While they hail from the far west of Canada, Brasstronaut first got real notice in that nation’s east, at Pop Montreal (QRO Festival Guide), and the band has the feel of being from that artistic city.  Yet their mix of styles isn’t codified in only a high-minded appeal, which one might fear, but smooth and appealing.  They don’t vary their sound too much, track-to-track on the four-song Old World Lies (aside from actually taking out the words in the closer, “Fan”, which is some instrumental jazz for people who don’t like instrumental jazz), meaning the band might need to do a little more on their full-length, scheduled for release this October.  But they’ve got something special that can’t be denied, even if it also can’t quite be nailed down.
