Darmstadt Institute – Selections

I recently ran across this compilation of artists via Free Music Archive via Issue Project via Darmstadt Institute via Who Knows Where? It’s a motley crew of ultra contemporary music composers that gives you the break from 4/4 time that you so richly deserve. Have a listen over a cool glass of Vinho Verde, and head to Free Music Archive to download the entire compilation (for free, duh).

The two tracks below by John Moran & Saori are sometimes minimal, sometimes serial, sometimes maximal. The iterative layering of samples in "Excerpt I" begins as amusing and builds to a slightly more deranged fervour late in the piece. Give it a whirl!
