It can be kind of difficult to imagine that just two men could bring such a heavy and rocked-out sound to a venue as big as Portland’s beloved Crystal Ballroom, but that is exactly what Sebastien Grainger and Jesse Keeler – collectively known as Death From Above 1979 – did on Tuesday, November 18th.

The excitement ran rampant in the nearly packed venue before they took the stage. The experience was a special one as the tour was in support of their first new album in ten years, The Physical World (QRO review). That is a long stretch in the music industry, and for them to still have such a dedicated following after all that time really says something about the chemistry between these two men.

They took the stage to a simple backdrop which featured their famed likenesses with elephant trunks for noses and ripped through many of the songs off of The Physical World, such as “Cheap Talk”, “Right On, Frankenstein”, the hammering “Virgins”, and “Trainwreck 1979”, as well as some cuts off of their first/only other record, 2004’s You’re A Woman, I’m A Machine – like “Blood on Our Hands” and “Black History Month”.

None of DFA1979’s songs are that long so before we knew it, they had left the stage and then came back for an encore. There was very little banter with the crowd. It was a simple show and was easy to tell that Grainger and Keeler simply came to give the people what they wanted.

Here’s hoping it’s not another decade before their next album, or, at least, not that long until they tour again.
