PJ Harvey, 7:45 PM – 8:45 PM

Acclaimed English singer/songwriter Polly Jean ‘PJ’ Harvey (QRO photos at a festival) has been making music for over two decades now, adding more rock to sound with this year’s Let England Shake (QRO review), but still has the unique live show (QRO photos), like at Vincent Gallo’s 2005 ATP.

Also:

Doom, 6:00 PM – 7:00 PM

Beak>, 4:00 PM – 5:00 PM

PJ Harvey

WEST HALL

Factory Floor, 11:00 PM – 12:00 AM

The U.K. noisecore outfit supposedly rewards on further listens, if you can get that far.  They return to ATP after playing ATP: In Between Days last December.

Factory Floor

Company Flow, 8:30 PM – 9:30 PM

Rapper/producer El-P and DJ/producer Mr. Len formed underground hip-hop outfit Company Flow with fellow rapper/producer Bigg Jus, and now bring the rhymes to ATP.

Company Flow

The Books, 6:45 PM – 7:45 PM

The Books incorporate samples and obscure sounds into their indie-classical sound, and are playing their third ATP event.

SUNDAY, JULY 24TH

GREAT HALL

Portishead, 9:30 PM – 11:00 PM

Portishead

Grinderman, 7:45 PM – 8:45 PM

Nick Cave and his Bad Seeds have been an acclaimed act for years now, but what do you do when you want to put that aside and just rock?  Form a new band, which Cave, did in 2006, Grinderman (QRO photos).  Out last year with Grinderman 2 (QRO review), the group kicks ass with skill.  This is also a return to ATP for Cave & co., who curated 2009’s Australian ATP.

Grinderman

Swans, 5:30 PM – 7:00 PM

Another influential act coming to ATP is New York’s post-punk pioneers Swans (QRO live review), with Michael Gira’s outfit coming to London as part of a worldwide tour (QRO tour preview).

Swans

Beach House, 4:00 PM – 5:00 PM

The guitar-and-keys pair of Victoria Legrand and Alex Scally (QRO photos at a festival) may hail from Baltimore, but there’s a Francophile expanse to Beach House (QRO photos).  2008’s Devotion (QRO review) earned them many fans that felt that way (QRO live review), and last year’s Teen Dream (QRO review) was shortlisted for ‘albums of the year’, and they’re working the festivals (QRO photos at a festival).  And the sweet sounds work in the bright sunlight (QRO photos outdoors), such as the Minehead ATP earlier this year.

Beach House

Liars, 2:30 PM – 3:15 PM

Though 2001’s They Threw Us All In a Trench and Stuck a Monument On Top got Liars (QRO photos outdoors) labeled ‘dance-punk’, they’ve since shifted radically, losing old fans, but gaining new ones (QRO photos at a festival), especially with last year’s Sisterworld (QRO review) – and this will be the fifth ATP event they’ve played (QRO photos at ATP 2010).

Also:

S.C.U.M., 1:15 PM – 2:00 PM

Liars

WEST HALL

Caribou, 11:20 PM – 12:20 AM

Daniel Victor Snaith (QRO photos) combined electronica and psychedelica expertly with 2007’s Andorra (QRO review) as Caribou (QRO live review).  Last year’s Swim (QRO review) looks to nineties electronic beats (like Portishead…), not as fine, but still holds up – as does his live show (QRO live review), especially at a festival (QRO photos at a festival) – he’s played an ATP, U.K. or U.S., every year since 2008!

Also:

The Telescopes, 8:45 PM – 9:30 PM

Alan Moore & Stephen O’Malley, 7:00 PM – 7:30 PM

Anika, 5:45 PM – 6:30 PM

The Passion of Joan Arc, 3:30 PM – 5:00 PM

Caribou

Godspeed You! Black Emperor, 12:30 PM – 2:30 PM

Post-rock is littered with seminal acts, but none, none is more important and acclaimed as Godspeed You! Black Emperor.  The Montreal ensemble are ATP regulars, having played in 2002, and curated not only last December’s ‘Nightmare Before Christmas’, but also the first ‘I’ll Be Your Mirror’ event, earlier this year in Japan.  So this ATP appearance might be considered ‘taking it easy’ – and they’re kind enough not to play at night against all the other great acts, but first thing on Day Two.

Godspeed You! Black Emperor

PANORAMA ROOM

The Sundowners, 6:30 PM – 7:15 PM

Acoustic Ladyland, 5:00 PM – 5:45 PM

London’s own Acoustic Ladyland mix jazz and punk for an original sound.  They have announced that this ATP performance will be their last ever, so catchy them while you can…

Also:

Lord Sinclair’s Pop Quiz, 3:30 PM – 4:30 PM

Fairhorns, 2:30 PM – 3:15 PM

Acoustic Ladyland
