Desert Daze 2017 Preview

You’ve always wanted to head to Joshua Tree since U2’s seminal album (QRO deluxe edition review), and there’s no better time than this weekend with the music & more festival Desert Daze, Friday-Sunday, October 13th-15th:

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 13th

Moon Stage

Courtney Barnett & Kurt Vile and The Sea Lice, 10:15 PM – 11:20 PM

Two of the biggest young names in alt-guitar rock, Courtney Barnett (QRO photos) and Kurt Vile (QRO photos), have teamed up with a new record, Lotta Sea Live.
Courtney Barnett & Kurt Vile
Ty Segall, 8:00 PM – 9:15 PM

California’s Ty Segall (QRO photos at a festival) has evolved from his ‘kick in the pants’ early work to a more effortless boot to the fanny these days (QRO photos), where he’s been quite prolific, including 2012’s Slaughterhouse (QRO review), plus 2013’s Sleeper, 2014’s Manipulator, last year’s Emotional Mugger with his new band, The Muggers, and this year’s self-titled album (QRO review), not to mention solo albums & team-ups.
Ty Segall
Ian Svenonius Opening Ceremonies, 7:50 PM

Ian Svenonius, the theatrical leader of such alt-greats at Nation of Ulysses and The Make-Up (see below), holds the opening ceremonies for Desert Daze ’17.
Ian Svenonius
Boris, 6:10 PM – 7:00 PM

Japan has adopted and remade everything from car manufacturing to the club sandwich, and metal’s no different – thanks to Boris (QRO photos at a festival). Along with ‘bor’ bros Boredoms, Boris has taken metal into whole new arenas, both geographically and musically.

Block Stage

Ariel Pink, 11:20 PM – 12:20 AM

Ariel Marcus Rosenberg, or ‘Ariel Pink’ (QRO live review), helped start chillwave just recording in his bedroom, but has since recruited a band (QRO live review) and ventured out & onto the stage, with 2010’s Before Today (QRO review), 2012’s Mature Themes (QRO review), 2014’s pom pom (QRO review), and this year’s Dedicated to Bobby Jameson, and has kept it up live (QRO live review).
Ariel Pink
BADBADNOTGOOD, 9:15 PM – 10:15 PM

The Toronto trio BADBADNOTGOOD (QRO photos at a Toronto festival) are known for incorporating hip-hop into their music, and have collaborated with the Odd Future likes of Tyler, the Creator and Frank Ocean, and most recently the one-and-only Ghostface Killah (QRO photos together at a festival).
BADBADNOTGOOD
Panda Bear, 7:00 PM – 8:00 PM

One of the founding members of Baltimore’s ultra-relevant experimental electronic outfit Animal Collective (QRO live review), Noah Lennox – a.k.a. Panda Bear (QRO photos at a festival) – broke out of the zoo and is now on his own (QRO photos at a festival), with 2011’s Tomboy (QRO review), the follow-up to 2007’s Person Pitch (QRO review). He comes to Desert Daze after contributing to Daft Punk’s Grammy-winning Random Access Memories (QRO review), playing off his 2015 Panda Bear Meets the Grim Reaper.

The Budos Band, 11:30 PM – 12:30 AM

Staten Island’s afro-soul instrumental ensemble bring their own spin on sweet sixties R&B to Desert Daze. Part, maybe even the core, of Brooklyn’s Dap-Tone community (alongside the likes of the gone-far-too-soon Sharon Jones), with anywhere between eleven to thirteen members, expect the stage to be packed when Budos Band (QRO album review) steps outside (QRO photos outdoors).
The Budos Band
Liars, 10:00 PM – 11:00 PM

Though 2001’s They Threw Us All In a Trench and Stuck a Monument On Top got Liars (QRO photos outdoors) labeled ‘dance-punk’, they’ve since shifted radically, losing old fans, but gaining new ones (QRO photos at a festival), especially with 2010’s Sisterworld (QRO review), 2012’s WIXIW (QRO review) & 2014’s Mess (QRO review), including live (QRO photos) and at festivals (QRO photos at a festival). They come to Desert Daze (QRO photos at a ’17 festival) behind this summer’s TFCF.
Liars
Lee Fields & The Expressions, 8:30 PM – 9:30 PM

Known for their soulful and R&B styled vignettes, Lee Fields & The Expressions is the collective from Brooklyn, NY (QRO photos outdoors in Brooklyn). Drawing inspirations from the likes of Marvin Gaye, Curtis Mayfield, and James Brown (QRO photos at James Brown celebration), it’s as if taking a trip down memory lane to the Motown Era. They have toured across the world so make sure to catch them at Desert Daze (QRO photos in California).
Lee Fields & The Expressions
Deap Vally, 7:15 PM – 8:00 PM

Los Angeles’ own Deap Vally (QRO photos) is Lindsey Troy & Julie Edwards, channeling good ol’ fashioned garage rock ‘n’ roll.
Deap Vally
John Maus, 5:55 PM – 6:45 PM

While also a keyboard player for Panda Bear and Ariel Pink (see both above), John Maus has become best known for his uninhibited solo shows (QRO photos outdoors).

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 14th

Moon Stage

Iggy Pop, 10:15 PM – 11:30 PM

Iggy Pop is one of the most iconic frontmen in rock ‘n’ roll history. For if there is such a thing as ‘post-punk’, then there’s also ‘proto-punk’, and no act more paved the way for the raw rock explosion than Iggy & The Stooges (QRO photos at a festival). They’d burned the candle at both ends before there was any “Anarchy In the U.K.”, but reunited in 2003 (QRO photos at a festival) before finally closing out (thanks to fewer & fewer living Stooges) last year. Of course, Mr. Pop has paved his own solo career; you know “Lust For Life” & “Real Wild Child (Wild One)”, but there’s so much more, like last year’s critically acclaimed team up with Josh Homme (Queens of the Stone Age, Eagles of Death Metal), Post Pop Depression (QRO review). Word is that Iggy is getting tired of touring (QRO photos), so catch him while you can at Desert Daze (QRO photos at a festival)!
Iggy Pop
King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard, 8:05 PM – 9:10 PM

They’re only eight albums in, but Australian psych-rock outfit King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard (QRO photos at a festival) are finally breaking out (QRO live review).
King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard
Sleep, 6:00 PM – 7:15 PM

During the nineties, San Jose death metal outfit Sleep was the definition of stoner rock. Label issues forced their break-up by the end of the decade/century/millennium, but in 2009 Sleep came back, and have kept on going (QRO photos at a festival), and at Desert Daze perform their seminal Holy Mountain.
Sleep
Thurston Moore Group, 4:10 PM – 5:05 PM

The center around which the iconic Sonic Youth (QRO live review) largely revolved, Thurston Moore (QRO solo live review) has fashioned a musical legacy like few others, remaining relevant for going on forty years now in punk rock, alt-rock, noise-rock (a style Moore basically helped invent & popularize), and more. While the dissolution of his marriage to bandmate Kim Gordon seems to have spelled the end of Sonic Youth, Moore has kept on going, first in his post-Youth outfit Chelsea Light Moving (QRO photos at a festival) and now in The Thurston Moore Band (QRO photos at a festival) and solo albums like this year’s Rock n Roll Consciousness.

Frankie & The Witch Fingers, 1:20 PM – 2:00 PM

Mr. Elevator

Block Stage

Twin Peaks, 11:30 PM – 12:20 AM

Of course there’s a band named Twin Peaks (QRO spotlight on) – even before the recent revival on Showtime. Their power-pop and wild stage antics (QRO live review) bring to mind The Replacements, and they (QRO interview) behind last year’s Down In Heaven.
Twin Peaks
John Cale, 9:10 PM – 10:15 PM

The iconic Velvet Underground’s iconic John Cale comes to Desert Daze with his whole impressive discography in tow.
John Cale
Terry Riley & Gyan Riley, 7:15 PM – 8:05 PM

Terry Riley’s In C began the marriage of psychedelica and classical that preceded today’s indie-classical by half a century, inspiring everyone from Phillip Glass to The Who. And he comes to Desert Daze (QRO photos at a festival) with his son, Gyan Riley.

Tortoise, 11:40 PM – 12:30 AM

Mixing post-rock modernism with jazz and electronica, Tortoise (QRO live review) are part of Chicago’s large instrumentalist community (such as labelmates The Sea and Cake – QRO live review – with whom they share drummer John McEntire). At once experimental and yet relaxed, they’re sort of a twenty-first century version of progressive rock.
Tortoise
Black Moth Super Rainbow, 10:00 PM – 11:00 PM

Mixing electronica, psychedelica, trance, indie, and more is Black Moth Super Rainbow (QRO photos). The Pittsburgh act is as comfortable in front of alternative crowds as electronic (especially when they’ve got a video introduction by Eric Wareheim of Tim & Eric – see above – and/or man in a monkey suit – QRO live review), and so is a perfect fit for Desert Daze.
Black Moth Super Rainbow
The Make-Up, 8:40 PM – 9:30 PM

Ladies & gentlemen, The Make-Up (QRO photos at a festival)! Out of the ashes of the seminal D.C. hardcore act Nation of Ulysses came that Gospel Yeah Yeah sound, a mix of punk, garage, soul, and liberation theology that brought rock ‘n’ roll to communal epiphany, fronted by singer Ian Svenonius and including guitarist James Canty (now of Saturday’s Ted Leo & The Pharmacists).

The Make-Up (QRO photos at a festival) broke-up in early 2000 (or rather, just as NOU became The Make-Up, The Make-up rearranged and were reincarnated as Weird War, and now Svenonius’ Chain & The Gang – QRO photos), but this year reunited (QRO photos – cue the NOU reunion rumors…).
The Make-Up
Avey Tare, 7:35 PM – 8:20 PM

One of the members of acclaimed experimental act Animal Collective (QRO live review), Avey Tare goes even more experimental when outside the Collective. There was his 2007 album with then-wife Kria Brekkan, Pullhair Rubeye (QRO review), which was released with the songs played backward, 2014’s hippie/rural/cannibal mix, Avey Tare’s Slasher Flicks (QRO photos at a festival), and now his new solo record, Eucalyptus.

SUNDAY, OCTOBER 15th

Moon Stage

Spiritualized, 8:40 PM – 9:55 PM

After the demise of the space-rock Spaceman 3, Jason Pierce stayed in the stratosphere (thanks to an inanimate carbon rod) as Spiritualized (QRO live review). They created the seminal Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space twenty years ago, and Spiritualized (QRO photos) comes to Desert Daze (QRO photos at a festival) behind 2012’s Sweet Heart Sweet Light.
Spiritualized
Eagles of Death Metal, 6:45 PM – 7:45 PM

Not a death metal act but a sort of cross between the genre and the Eagles, Eagles of Death Metal (QRO photos) are formed around Jesse Hughes and Josh Homme, though the latter rarely performs live thanks to his commitments to acts like Queens of the Stone Age.

In 2015 these Eagles (QRO photos at a festival) became famous in the most tragic of ways, as their set at Le Bataclan in Paris was one of the sites of the terrorist attacks in that city. But now this band soars even higher.
Eagles of Death Metal
Allah-Las, 4:45 PM – 5:45 PM

A psychedelic band from L.A. channeling influences like The Byrds and Captain Beefheart, Allah-Las (QRO photos at a festival) have a laid-back sound (even if they once had to cancel a show due to a bomb threat, because of their name…).

Unknown Mortal Orchestra, 9:55 PM – 10:55 PM

From Portland (QRO photos in Portland), but also New Zealand, Unknown Mortal Orchestra (QRO live review) impressed a lot of ears with their self-titled debut (QRO review) and 2015’s Multi Love, both of which managed to be avant while also still rockin’ (QRO photos at a festival).
Unknown Mortal Orchestra
Hope Sandoval & The Warm Inventions, 7:45 PM – 8:40 PM

Singer Hope Sandoval – the star of Mazzy Star – and Colm Ó Ciosóig of My Bloody Valentine (who curated the inaugural ATP NY in 2008) combined on Bavarian Fruit Bread back in 2001, only for the camera-shy Sandoval to disappear. However, the return was Warm for 2009’s softly beautiful Through the Devil Softly (QRO review) and last year’s Until the Hunter.
