Electric Forest 2017 Weekend Two Preview

In 2011, building on the Rothbury Festival of 2008 & 2009 (QRO photos of Rothbury ’09), Double JJ Ranch in Rothbury, MI began the jam-electronic Electric Forest Festival. In 2017, the festival is expanding to two four-day weekends, Thursday-Sunday, June 22nd-25th & June 29th-July 2nd:

THURSDAY, JUNE 29th

Ranch Arena Big Gigantic, 11:30 PM – 1:00 AM Boulder’s Big Gigantic (QRO photos at a festival) mix (big) electronic beats with live drums and even live saxo-mo-phone. Known to set crowds in a writhing heap of body parts (QRO photos at a festival), Big Gigantic (QRO photos at a festival) has been showcasing their electronic fervor all across the globe (QRO photos at a festival), including multiple Electric Forests, and the last ever New Year’s Eve at New York City’s closed landmark venue Roseland Ballroom (QRO live review).

Papadosio, 9:15 PM – 10:45 PM Papadosio (QRO photos at a festival) expands minds with genre-defying music, playing his fourth Electric Forest.

Cashmere Cat, 10:15 PM – 11:30 PM From cold Norway to hot Michigan summer comes Magnus August Høiberg, a.k.a. Cashmere Cat (QRO photos at a festival), returning to Electric Forest.

The Revivalists, 8:15 PM – 9:45 PM New Orleans seven-piece Americana rock band The Revivalists (QRO photos at a festival) were last year named one of Rolling Stone’s “10 Bands You Need To Know.”

Waka Flocka Flame, 6:45 PM – 7:45 PM South Jamaica, New York rapper Waka Flocka Flame (QRO photos) has worked with the big-name likes of Drake, Timbaland, and Drake – but is maybe best known for his on-again, off-again feud with longtime frenemy Gucci Mane.

FRIDAY, JUNE 30th

Ranch Arena Flume, 12:45 AM – 2:00 AM Bringing electronics from halfway around the world is Sydney’s Harley Streten – a.k.a. Flume (QRO photos at a festival). He’s coming off winning the Grammy for Best Dance/Electronic Album this year for Skin, and plays his second Electric Forest in three years.

The String Cheese Incident, 7:15 PM – 11:45 PM Colorado’s String Cheese Incident (QRO photos at a festival) had been one of the jam bands hardest working the road circuit, combining bluegrass and a whole host of other sounds. But after the 2007 departure of guitarist Bill Nershi following that summer’s tour, the band went into hiatus as they worked on their various solo projects. Only a couple of years later the group reunited for sporadic shows and touring (QRO photos). Now they come back to Rothbury behind this year’s Believe. The String Cheese Incident (QRO photos at a festival) have played every year of Electric Forest – and for ’17, they play three sets on Friday, and “Shebang” on Saturday (see below)!

Sherwood Court LOTUS, 1:00 AM – 2:30 AM Indiana’s LOTUS (QRO photos at a festival) moved from self-described “jamtronica” into a more electronic & instrumental style – but is still a jam band festival mainstay (QRO photos at a festival), including most Electric Forests.

Lettuce, 11:00 PM – 12:30 AM Get funky with Boston’s many-membered Lettuce (QRO photos at a festival), who’ve played Electric Forest every other year since 2011.

Tripolee Dillon Francis, 2:00 AM – 3:15 AM American electronic artist Dillon Francis (QRO photos at a festival) has worked with big name DJs like Calvin Harris (QRO album review) and Diplo (QRO photos), to the point where he’s a big-name DJ all on his very own, headlining Friday night at Tripolee.

GTA, 12:45 AM – 2:00 AM Miami is America’s home for pioneering DJs, like GTA, who mix house music with hip-hop and salsa influences.

Alison Wonderland, 11:30 PM – 12:45 AM Sydney’s Alex Sholler began as a classically trained cellist, but has since stepped through the looking glass to become world-known DJ Alison Wonderland, who returns to Electric Forest for the second time in three years.

Snakehips, 9:30 PM – 10:45 PM Oliver Lee and James Carter made their Snakehips name doing Hype Machine remixes of everyone from Banks to The Weeknd, but found their own hit single in 2015’s “All My Friends”.

Vince Staples, 8:15 PM – 9:15 PM Electric Forest got a choice lyricist in Vince Staples (QRO photos at a festival). The Long Beach native first came up with others, such as in the group Cutthroat Boyz and in association with Odd Future (QRO live review), but has since made a name all his own (QRO photos at a festival), including a recent appearance on The Daily Show (QRO Music on Late Night TV).

Ranch Arena DJ Snake, 12:45 AM – 2:00 AM France’s trip-hop producer DJ Snake comes to Electric Forest off of working in 2014 with Diplo (QRO photos) and touring with Skrillex (QRO photos at a festival). More recently came debut album Encore, including single “Let Me Love You”, which featured none other than Justin Bieber (QRO photos at a festival).

Matisyahu, 6:00 PM – 7:15 PM Everyone’s favorite Jewish reggae/alternative/hip-hop artist (QRO photos) will also provide plenty of moments for dancing (QRO photos at a festival), but these moments are more of the lets all hold hands and sway back and forth (QRO live review) because if this very Jewish man (QRO photos on Hanukah) can make reggae sound this good (QRO photos at a festival), then anything is possible (QRO photos at a festival). He returns to Rothbury after playing the festival there in 2009 (QRO photos at Rothbury ‘09).

Preservation Hall Jazz Band, 4:00 PM – 5:15 PM New Orleans’ Preservation Hall has been preserving the iconic city’s jazz tradition not just in the Big Easy but also around the world thanks to the Preservation Hall Jazz Band (QRO photos), who having been bringing Dixieland to other lands since the founding of the hall back in the sixties. They play three times at their third straight year of Electric Forest.

Sherwood Court The Floozies, 1:15 AM – 2:30 AM Brothers Mark & Matt Hill (drums & guitar, respectively) combine top-notch electronic production with party-rock energy, and play their fourth Electric Forest in five years.

Thievery Corporation, 8:30 PM – 10:30 PM D.C.’s multi-cultural electronic all-star duo of Rob Garza and Eric Hilton (QRO live review) bring not just their expansive, chill, globe-trotting signature sound (and some revolutionary ideals often missing in the ‘party time’, apolitical attitude of electronica), like with 2011’s Culture of Fear (QRO review), 2014’s Saudade and this year’s The Temple of I & I, but also an eye-opening live performance with a fifteen-person band and grand light show (QRO photos) – they’re not like other computerized acts that just press ‘Play’ and collect their check, which is why this is their third Electric Forest (QRO photos at a festival).

The Infamous Stringdusters, 6:00 PM – 7:30 PM The Infamous Stringdusters (QRO photos at a festival) have earned their reputation with relentless bluegrass touring.

Sherwood Court RL Grime, 10:15 PM – 11:30 PM Henry Steinway, a.k.a. RL Grime (QRO photos at a festival), is a Los Angeles producer of hip-hop, trap, bass, and yes, grime. He plays his second Electric Forest.

Jubilee Nahko & Medicine For the People, 11:30 PM – 1:00 AM “They embrace Bob Marley’s idea of world-‐ bridging, bringing people together to resolve differences. The band has toured with SOJA, and internationally with Xavier Rudd, and performed at festivals across the globe (QRO photos at a festival), including most recent Electric Forests.

Conspirator, 9:30 PM – 11:00 PM Started by The Disco Biscuits’ Aron Magner and Marc Brownstein in 2004, Conspirator (QRO photos at a festival) has since grown into a full band, with members from such other Electric Forest acts as LOTUS (see above). They play their third Electric Forest.
