The Allman Brothers BandThe Allman Brothers Band

The Allman Brothers Band (QRO photos) feature Gregg Allman on vocals and Hammond B-3 organ, with Derek Trucks and Warren Haynes on vocals and slide guitars, plus Butch Trucks on drums, Marc Quinones on percussion.

Since 1989 the Brothers have toured nationally every year, averaging more than 60 live shows per year… all of which leaves little unsaid about this incomparable band. Leave it to another transcendent artist, Willie Nelson, to wrap up the essence of the Allman Brothers Band, as he did while presiding over their induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

WilcoWilco

For alt-country, there’s pretty much Wilco (QRO live review outdoors), and then there’s everybody else.  The Chicago stars, led by singer/songwriter Jeff Tweedy, but also featuring bassist John Stirratt, multi-instrumentalist Pat Sansone (the two of whom also form The Autumn Defense – QRO spotlight on), guitarist Nels Cline (QRO photos), drummer Glenn Kotche, pianist Mikael Jorgensen, and more (like “Jesus, Etc.” – QRO video), have played everywhere from Conan at home to “Far, Far Away” (QRO video).  They’ve also been excellent for so long (QRO live review outdoors) that their set lists are mammoth and still can’t cover everything (QRO live review) from the late greats like “I’m the Man Who Loves You” (QRO video) to more recent material off of Sky Blue Sky (QRO review),Wilco (The Album) (QRO review), and The Whole Love (QRO review) like “Hate It Here” (QRO video).  And the quintessential American band (QRO live review) comes to Lockn’ (QRO photos at a festival).

Tom Petty & The HeartbreakersTom Petty & The Heartbreakers

One of the best-selling artists of all time, Tom Petty (QRO photos) has been active since the seventies and “Breakdown”, keeping it up through the eighties and nineties, when a whole new generation found him in such hit singles as “Free Fallin’”, “Into the Great Wide Open”, and “Mary Jane’s Last Dance”. His popularity has never wavered, he’s even done acting (like as a future version of himself in Kevin Costner’s The Postman…), and he comes to Lockn’ behind this year’s Hypnotic Eye, his first full-length since 2010’s Mojo (QRO review), and just after major gigs at Madison Square Garden (QRO venue review) and Fenway Park (QRO photos)!

Widespread PanicWidespread Panic

After Jerry Garcia’s death, The Grateful Dead could no longer be the greatest road-warrior jam band out there (despite pseudo-reforming as just ‘The Dead’ – QRO photos). That status was taken up by Phish (QRO photos), but then they went into their cycles of break-ups & getting-back-togethers. Neither is currently working the road like the band you could most point to as their successor, Widespread Panic, who play their umpteenth festival at High Sierra (which they’ve played three times, going back twenty years!).

Widespread Panic is such a hard working act that they’re playing two sets at Lockn’!
