Lollapalooza 2018 Preview

More than a quarter-century in, Lollapalooza is still one of the biggest & best music festivals around, bringing in a wide range of artists & genres. It returns to Chicago’s Grant Park for four days, Thursday-Sunday, August 2nd-5th:

LANY
The Wombats, 3:45 PM – 4:45 PM

There are some acts that you can’t help but enjoy, and Liverpool’s The Wombats (QRO spotlight on) are one. The infectious electric sound of 2007 debut A Guide To Love, Lose & Desperation and songs such as “Moving To New York” (QRO video) and “Here Comes the Anxiety” (QRO video) was followed-up nicely in 2011 with This Modern Glitch (QRO review), and songs like “Techno Fan” (QRO video) and “Tokyo (Vampires and Wolves)” (QRO video). In 2015 The Wombats (QRO interview) returned with Glitterbug (QRO review) and pieces such as “This Is Not a Party” (QRO video) and “Emoticons” (QRO video), and this year with the excellent titled Beautiful People Will Ruin Your Life (QRO review).

Grant Park Stage

Arctic Monkeys, 8:45 PM – 10:00 PM

If you’re unfamiliar with the Sheffield-native English rockers (QRO live review), you obviously were not paying much attention in 2006 when their much ballyhoo-ed debut album Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I Am Not was being pumped out of every speaker and headphone either side of the Atlantic & more (QRO live review in Australia), thanks to an energetic MySpace fan base. Fast-forward eight years. MySpace is a shell of its former self, but the Arctic Monkeys (QRO photos at a festival) have put out four more studio albums, 2007’s Favorite Worst Nightmare (QRO review), 2009’s Humbug (QRO review), 2011’s Suck It and See (QRO review), and 2013’s American breakthrough AM, and with a new media storm around them (QRO photos). They return to headline the Grant Park Stage (QRO photos headlining Grant Park Stage at Lollapalooza ‘14) after the release of Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino.
Arctic Monkeys
CHVRCHES, 6:45 PM – 7:45 PM

Scottish electro-pop outfit CHVRCHES (QRO live review) have gotten very big very fast (QRO photos at a festival), before & after the release of debut full-length The Bones of What You Believe (QRO review) – but are fronted by the tiny Lauren Mayberry (QRO photos at a festival) and some giant lights. They successfully followed up Bones with 2015’s Every Open Eye (QRO review), and have Love Is Dead (QRO review) out this year, returning to Lollapalooza (QRO photos at Lollapalooza ‘14).
CHVRCHES
Franz Ferdinand, 4:45 PM – 5:45 PM

Playing Tonight: Franz Ferdinand (QRO review). The Scottish band broke out of their native Glasgow in 2005 with Franz Ferdinand and killer single “Take Me Out”, and even if their studio output since then hasn’t matched up, they’re still a great band live (QRO live review), and come to Lollapalooza (QRO photos at a festival) after 2013’s Right Thoughts, Right Words, Right Action (QRO review), 2015’s team-up (QRO photos) with art-rock new wave greats Sparks, FFS, and this year’s Always Ascending (QRO review), with great material all their own (QRO recent live review).
Franz Ferdinand
Stars, 2:45 PM – 3:45 PM

2008’s In Our Bedroom After The War marked a proverbial fork in the road moment for Montreal’s own Stars (QRO photos). While the band (QRO photos at a festival) was still pumping out high quantities of admirable, very layered pop songs like “Banquet”, their swooning ballads were a little too close to becoming overindulgent and underwhelming. With 2010’s The Five Ghosts (QRO review) and 2012’s The North, the band took the road less traveled, proving their pop relevance and then some (QRO photos), which continued with 2014’s No One Is Lost (QRO review) – and last year’s There Is No Love in Fluorescent Light (QRO review) might be the most Stars line ever. Known for the powerfully energetic shows (QRO live review), Stars are set to mesmerize festivalgoers (QRO live review).

FRIDAY, AUGUST 3rd

Bud Light Stage

The National, 8:30 PM – 10:00 PM

Cincinnati-by-way-of-Brooklyn’s The National (QRO photos outdoors) hit it big in 2007 with Boxer (QRO review) and tracks like “Fake Empire”, “Mistaken For Strangers”, and “Apartment Story” (QRO video) – and again in 2008 with the Virginia EP (QRO review), but that just presaged 2011’s High Violet (QRO review), which debuted at #3 on the Billboard charts (QRO expanded edition review). An impressive and much-in-demand act (QRO live review), they’re fitting in nicely as even festival headliner (QRO photos headlining a festival) or curator (QRO photos curating a festival), like at London’s All Tomorrow’s Parties (QRO photos), Wisconsin’s Eaux Claires (QRO photos), or Boston Calling (QRO photos).

Blown up to the point that New York Times Magazine ran a feature on them (QRO spotlight on) & Obama used (a family-friendly) bit of “Mr. November” (QRO video at a festival) as a campaign song, The National (QRO photos at a festival) returned from an hiatus in 2013 to take North America by storm (QRO photos headlining a festival) behind Trouble Will Find Me (QRO review), after having done so in Europe (QRO photos in Europe), the festival circuit (QRO photos at a festival), the European festival circuit (QRO photos at a European festival), Canada (QRO photos at a festival in Canada), Croatia (QRO photos at a Croatian festival), Singapore (QRO photos in Singapore) & their own Brooklyn (QRO photos in Brooklyn), plus both Barcelona’s Primavera Sound (QRO photos) and Portugal’s NOS Primavera Sound (QRO photos). They’ve since keep it going (QRO photos in 2014), including headlining American festivals (QRO photos headlining an American festival).

Last year, The National (QRO live review) released yet another amazing album, Sleep Well Beast (QRO review), which earlier this year won the Grammy for Alternative Album of the Year (QRO live review at a Grammy party). A perfect act for Lollapalooza (QRO photos headlining a festival).
The National
Post Malone, 6:45 PM – 7:45 PM

While best known for being a breakout hip-hop artist, Post Malone (QRO photos) traffics in many genres. He comes to Lollapalooza (QRO photos at a festival) after 2016’s debut full-length, Stoney.
Post Malone
James Bay, 4:45 PM – 5:45 PM

English singer-songwriter James Bay (QRO live review) broke out with 2014’s “Hold Back the River” and the following year’s Chaos and the Calm, earning Brit Award wins & Grammy nominations to boot. The singer returns to Lollapalooza (QRO live review) behind his electric second record, Electric Light.
James Bay
Parquet Courts, 2:45 PM – 3:45 PM

Bringing grunge back has been the active Parquet Courts (QRO photos at a festival), who come back to Lollapalooza (QRO photos at Lollapalooza ‘14) after April’s release of Wide Awake!.
Parquet Courts
Welshly Arms, 12:45 PM – 1:45 PM

Cleveland’s blues-rock outfit Welshly Arms (QRO photos at a festival) come to Lollapalooza behind last year’s hit song “Legendary” (which has been used in promos of everything from WWE to Cleveland Indians to Sense8).

Cali electro indie-pop outfit The Neighbourhood (QRO live review) debuted already on the majors after hit YouTube single “Sweater Weather” (QRO review), with 2013’s I Love You on Columbia, and have been winning fans (QRO photos at a festival) even outside of their ‘hood (QRO photos abroad), with 2015’s Wiped Out! and this year’s The Neighbourhood.
The Neighbourhood
Lizzo, 3:45 PM – 4:45 PM

Catch the hot, fast-rising alternative hip-hop of Minneapolis’ Lizzo (QRO photos at a festival).
Lizzo
Gang of Youths, 1:45 PM – 2:45 PM

JUNGLE
Brockhampton, 7:45 PM – 8:30 PM

Formed in an online forum, making them “the internet’s first boy band,” Brockhampton (QRO photos at a festival) bring the twentieth century phenomena into the modern age, including hip-hop and mixtapes – and not being just lily-white pretty faces. Though they recently kicked out a member for sexual assault allegations (very modern), and went on a hiatus, but are back.
Brockhampton
Greta Van Fleet, 6:30 PM – 7:15 PM

New Michigan rock comes to Lollapalooza in the form of the next generation of classic rock, Greta Van Fleet (QRO spotlight on), one of Robert Plant’s favorite young bands, touring behind last year’s EPs Black Smoke Rising & From the Fires (QRO reviews).

There may not be a bigger musician right now than Bruno Mars. The Hawaiian R&B singer has had hit after lovely hit, from “Just the Way You Are” to “Locked Out of Heaven” to “24K Magic”. “24K Magic” & the album of the same name swept the Grammys earlier this year, proving that the appeal of Mars, one of the best-selling artists of all time, is wide and vast.
Bruno Mars
Walk the Moon, 6:30 PM – 7:30 PM

In their self-titled album, Walk the Moon (QRO review), these Ohio natives (QRO live review) became one of America’s infectious indie rock groups (QRO photos at a festival) and it’s easy to see why: their catchy guitar riffs, fun and creamy pop beats can strike a tune within any listener (QRO photos at a festival). In 2012, the band (QRO photos) had the ‘song of the summer’ in “Anna Sun”, but they’re more than just that great single (QRO photos), and come to Lollapalooza (QRO photos at a festival) behind 2014’s follow-up full-length, Talking Is Hard (QRO review) and last year’s less impressive What If Nothing. Shut up and dance with me!
Walk the Moon
Tyler, the Creator, 4:30 PM – 5:30 PM

Lollapalooza flirts with awesomeness and danger by booking the infamous Tyler, the Creator (QRO photos at a festival). In addition to fronting the ultra-chaotic Odd Future (QRO live review) collective, he’s released two solo studio albums of his own, 2012’s Goblin (QRO review) and 2015’s Wolf (QRO review), and will come to Lollapalooza behind last year’s Flower Boy.

SATURDAY, AUGUST 4th

Bud Light Stage

Vampire Weekend, 8:30 PM – 10:00 PM

Overnight successes the world over should take a lesson from Vampire Weekend (QRO photos at a festival). The band went from opening for the likes of White Rabbits (QRO live review, when Vampire Weekend opened) and Tokyo Police Club (QRO live review, when Vampire Weekend opened) in 2007 to massive success after they opened the following year with their self-titled debut.

This, of course, earned them (QRO live review) legions of haters, often focusing on their preppy look & history, though others just grew enraged at the music from ‘the whitest band’ (according to stuffwhitepeoplelike blog) being called ‘afro-pop’, and the comparisons with Paul Simon’s iconic Graceland (QRO deluxe edition review). They wisely slipped from view for a while, but returned to Jeff Curtin’s (QRO interview) Tree Fort Studios, faced up to the haters & the sophomore jinx to put out Contra (QRO review) in 2009, and reached #1 in the charts (only the twelfth independently-released record to do so in the last twenty years). They’ve since grown comfortable as headliners (QRO photos headlining a festival) and playing the big stage, even played Down Under (QRO live review in New Zealand), and won the Grammy for Best Alternative Album with 2013’s Modern Vampires of the City (QRO review). Vampire Weekend headline Lollapalooza (QRO photos at a festival) – ironically up against fellow end-of-weekers The Weeknd (see below) – working on their next record, so expect new material from this old Weekend.
Vampire Weekend
St. Vincent, 6:45 PM – 7:45 PM

After the one-and-only Annie Clark (QRO interview) made 2007 her break-out year, both as part of The Polyphonic Spree on The Fragile Army (QRO review) and with her own debut as St. Vincent (QRO photos), Marry Me (QRO review), she followed that up with even-better years (QRO spotlight on), gracing festivals (QRO photos at a festival), charming and surprising crowds with winning humor live (QRO live review), and bringing a stable of new songs (QRO live review). Those new songs, like “Laughing With a Mouth of Blood” (QRO video) and “Actor Out of Work” (QRO video) formed into 2009’s Actor (QRO review), which vaunted her into the even bigger time (QRO photos at a festival), including playing Lincoln Center (QRO live review) and other storied concert halls (QRO photos at a festival) & venues (QRO photos at Royal Albert Hall).

Admittedly, 2011’s Strange Mercy (QRO review) wasn’t quite as good, but then she teamed up with the one-and-only David Byrne (QRO photos at a festival together) for 2012′s Love This Giant (QRO review), and the holy St. Vincent (QRO photos) came back with a vengeance in 2014 on St. Vincent (QRO review), including an absolutely stellar live show (QRO photos in Europe), with her platinum grey hair and mannequin moves shining outdoors (QRO live review outdoors), at festivals (QRO photos at a festival) and in the Old World (QRO live review in Europe). A must-see at Lollapalooza (QRO photos at a festival), she comes behind last year’s massively seductive MASSEDUCTION (QRO review) and seductive stage show (QRO photos at a 2018 festival).
St. Vincent

Dua Lipa
Carly Rae Jepsen, 5:30 PM – 6:30 PM

Three words: “Call Me Maybe”. With that song, the third-place finisher of the 2007 season of Canadian Idol (the version where even the Simon Cowell clone is polite) reached massive fame, with what became the best-selling single worldwide in 2012. Carly Rae Jepsen is still a pop star, but one of those alt-Canadian ones – the kind who’d play Lollapalooza (QRO photos at a Chicago festival).

Gucci Mane, 5:00 PM – 6:00 PM

Along with the likes of T.I. & Young Jeezy, Gucci Mane (QRO photos at a festival) pioneered the trap music style of hip-hop. He comes to Lollapalooza behind 2016’s The Return of East Atlanta Santa album, last year’s collaboration with Metro Boomin, DropTopWop, and his Billboard Hot 100 #1 single “Black Beatles”, with Rae Sremmurd.

The Vaccines, 3:00 PM – 4:00 PM

The Vaccines (QRO live review) have grown up (somewhat) with 2012’s Come of Age (QRO review), 2015’s English Graffiti, and this year’s infectious Combat Sports (QRO review), with their garage rock maybe finally earning some all the attention they got (QRO photos at a festival) from debut What Did You Expect From The Vaccines? (QRO review).

Chromeo, 7:30 PM – 8:30 PM

There are combos and then there are combos: Montreal’s Chromeo (QRO live review) are the electro-funk duo of Dave 1 (David Macklovitch) and P-Thugg (Patrick Gemayel) has been best friends since childhood (QRO live review), billing themselves as, “The only successful Arab/Jewish collaboration since the beginning of time” (but what is their stance on Québécois independence?…). And their electronica works outdoors (QRO photos outdoors), day or night (QRO live review), even at a festival (QRO photos at a festival). They come back to Lollapalooza (QRO photos at Lollapalooza ‘14) with their great show (QRO live review), off of this year’s Head Over Heels.
Chromeo
Manchester Orchestra, 5:30 PM – 6:30 PM

From Atlanta, not New or Old England, Manchester Orchestra (QRO live review) were more rock than alt- on debut I’m Like a Virgin Losing a Child (QRO review), and moved firmly into the rock camp with 2009’s Mean Everything To Nothing (QRO review), 2011’s Simple Math (QRO review), 2014’s Cope (QRO review), and last year’s A Black Mile To the Surface (QRO review). However, the outfit does it well (QRO live review) and big (QRO photos) as they come back to Lollapalooza (QRO photos at Lollapalooza ‘14) to rock (QRO live review at Lollapalooza ’17 after-party).
Manchester Orchestra
Kali Uchis, 3:30 PM – 4:30 PM

Jack White, 8:30 PM – 10:00 PM

The most famous artist in indie-rock, probably the most famous rock ‘n’ roller to emerge in a generation, you already know Jack White’s story (QRO photos) – married & broke-up with drummer Meg White, then formed The White Stripes (QRO live review) with her (pseudo-pretending to be brother-and-sister), massive success as a new generation of rock ‘n’ roll broke out at the start of this century/millennium, Meg’s meltdown, Jack’s work in other bands like The Raconteurs & The Dead Weather (QRO album review), The White Stripes’ final confirmed break up in 2011, and Jack White’s solo, with 2012’s Blunderbuss (QRO review), 2014’s Lazaretto, and this year’s Boarding House Reach (QRO review).

White’s been on everything from The Simpsons to The Colbert Report, founded his own label, Third Man Records (that included America’s favorite pundit as an artist), and Boarding House Reach hit #1 on the charts – so don’t expect to get anywhere near the stage (QRO photos headlining a festival) unless you camp out there the night before (but hopefully he’ll play for longer than he did at his notorious Radio City Music Hall appearance in 2012 – QRO live review)…
Jack White
Portugal. The Man, 6:30 PM – 7:30 PM

Boston Calling draws from very farther up north with Alaska’s Portugal. The Man (QRO photos at a festival). The rambling grunge outfit garnered new fans with 2007 sophomore release Church Mouth (QRO review), and its unhinged alt-rock (QRO live review), though slipped somewhat since then, even while finally playing Europe (QRO photos at a European festival) and becoming a festival favorite (QRO photos at a festival). Their major label debut In the Mountain In the Cloud (QRO review) was more psych-lite, but they still bring it live (QRO live review), and even went Down Under (QRO photos at a festival) after 2013’s release of follow-up Evil Friends (QRO review), hitting both the festival circuit (QRO photos at a 2013 festival) and live gigs (QRO 2013 live review). They come to Lollapalooza (QRO photos at a festival) touring last year’s hit Woodstock (QRO review), which has vaunted them in popularity (QRO photos at a 2018 festival) thanks to big hit, “Feel It Still”.
Portugal. The Man
Lykke Li, 4:30 PM – 5:30 PM

In the wake of Peter Bjorn and John’s (QRO spotlight on) “Young Folks” success, the music industry was on the look out for the next Swedish sensation – preferably a comely lass from Scandinavia. And at CMJ ‘08 (QRO recap), she was found in Li Lykke Timotej Zachrisson, or Lykke Li (QRO photos) and her debut, Wounded Rhymes (QRO review). Since then, she’s gone on to outshine (QRO photos) almost every Swede since ABBA, with follow-ups Youth Novels (QRO review), 2014’s I Never Learn (QRO review) – and the so sad & sexy so sad so sexy (QRO review) out this year, as she comes back to Lollapalooza (QRO photos at Lollapalooza ’14).
Lykke Li
