Music Fest NW 2012 Preview
The Pacific Northwest has been home to alternative music since long before Seattle grunge, and one of the most ‘indie’ cities anywhere in the world is Oregon’s Portland. You may know if from IFC’s Portlandia (or, more recently, NBC’s Grimm), but musically it’s got more than just Mayor Kyle MacLachlan’s reggae band – there’s the five-day city-spanning festival Music Fest NW, which takes over venues all around PDX, Wednesday-Sunday, September 5th to 9th:

Here’s a handy map of the participating venues:

QRO Recommendation

Wednesday, September 5th

Passion Pit Crystal Ballroom, 1332 W Burnside St.
9:00pm – LP
10:00pm – Passion Pit

Blowing up very fast was Cambridge, Mass’ Passion Pit (QRO photos). Single “Sleepyhead” (QRO video) found its way to MTV nominations, while debut Manners (QRO review) found its way onto the charts – and expectations are seriously high for this year’s follow-up, Gossamer (QRO photos at a recent festival), and single “Take a Walk” QRO review). Catch the big-name indietronica stars (QRO photos outdoors) as they return to the road (QRO photos at a festival), ‘cause they’ve moved up to the big-time (QRO photos), and aren’t playing small places – or even medium-sized (QRO photos) anymore… (QRO live review)

Doug Fir, 830 E Burnside St.
Against Me!9:00pm – The Minus 5
10:00pm – Bobby Bare Jr.
11:00pm – Sloan

Canadian alt-rock stars (in Canada) Sloan (QRO album review) play Twice Removed.

Hawthorne Theatre, 1507 S 39th Ave.
8:00pm – Joyce Manor
9:00pm – Andrew Jackson Jihad
10:00pm – Against Me!

Northern Florida’s given the world a lot of punk, some of it good, some of it not so much, but on the more positive side is Against Me! (QRO photos). Fronted by Tom Gabel (QRO interview), and including Tom Weinberg on drums (son of E Street Band/Conan O’Brien drummer Max), Against Me! (QRO photos) successfully made the jump to major label without losing their edge on 2010’s White Crosses (QRO review). They did make major news earlier this year when Gabel announced that he was transgender, and undergoing the process of transition to becoming a woman. Yet the group (QRO spotlight on – which also left the majors and are starting their own label for this year’s Transgender Dysphoria Blues) has continued to rock (QRO photos).Opening is Andrew Jackson Jihad (QRO album review) and Joyce Manor (QRO photos).

Mission Theater, 1624 NW Gilsan St.
7:00pm – Don’t Follow Me (I’m Lost) – A Film about Bobby Bare Jr.

Before Bobby Bare Jr. (QRO photos at MFNW) plays Doug Fir Lounge (see above), watch a movie about him.

Bobby Bare Jr.Mississippi Studios, 3939 N Mississippi Ave.
9:00pm – Adventure Galley
10:00pm – Jjamz
11:00pm – Superhumanoids

Roseland Theater, 8 NW 8th Ave.
9:00pm – Hungry Ghost
10:00pm – Red Fang
11:00pm – Hot Snakes

San Diego’s Hot Snakes mixed DIY and hardcore up until their 2005 break-up, which saw members join/form groups such as The Night Marchers (QRO photos) and Obits (QRO album review), but 2011 brought a reunion that has kept on going.

Thursday, September 6th

Purity Ring
Doug Fir, 830 E Burnside St.
10:30am – Radiation City
12:30pm – Ceremony
2:30pm – Purity Ring
4:30pm – tba

Seattle radio station KEXP is once again broadcasting during the day from Doug Fir Lounge with free sets by MFNW artists. So if you’re out-and-about during the day, Thursday-Saturday, catch sets by MFNW artists that you might otherwise miss due to a conflict.
These United States

Aladdin Theater, 3017 SE Milwaukee Ave.
8:00pm – Erik Koskinen
9:00pm – These United States
10:00pm – Trampled By Turtles

These United States (QRO spotlight on) should be an indie-festival regular (QRO photos at a festival), and hopefully they’re becoming one (QRO photos at a festival). Their alt-country/jam is just jam enough to be fun (QRO photos outdoors), while alt- enough to not be affected (QRO photos in New York), and country enough to be comforting (QRO photos in Middle America). T.U.S. (QRO photos outdoors) are also a prolific outfit, with 2008’s Crimes (QRO review), 2009’s Everything Touches Everything (QRO review), 2010’s What Lasts (QRO review), and this year’s These United States (QRO review).Hopefully they’ll play everything from “Everything Touches Everything” (QRO video) to “I Want You To Keep Everything” (QRO video). And their live show (QRO live review) is a rip-roaring great way to start off MFNW (QRO photos at a festival).

From frigid Duluth comes the warm jam-folk of Trampled by Turtles (QRO photos), who are hitting up a number of festivals this summer (QRO photos outdoors), and touring for the umpteenth time with These United States (QRO video of them playing together).

Backspace, 115 NW 5th Ave.
Omar Souleyman8:00pm – Lee Corey Oswald

Branx, 320 SE 2nd Ave.
8:00pm – Copy
9:00pm – Stay Calm
10:00pm – Sun Angle
11:00pm – Omar Souleyman

Celebrate the Arab Spring at MFNW with Omar Souleyman! The Arab/Kurdish musician (QRO photos at a festival) hails from northeastern Syria, a hotbed of today’s brave resistance to the (hopefully) next Mid-East dictator to fall. Thankfully Souleyman’s traditional Middle Eastern music – much of it recorded live at local weddings – has already traveled the world.

9:00pm – Tenlons Fort
10:00pm – Cosmonauts
11:00pm – Guantanamo Baywatch
12:00am – The Growlers

9:00pm – Child Children
10:00pm – The Pynnacles
11:00pm – APACHE
12:00am – King Khan & The Shrines

When old-timers complain that rock has lost the crazy performance antics of yore, tell them to check out King Khan & The Shrines (QRO photos). While the band’s sound borrows from fifties garage rock, this Montreal-meets-Berlin act has one of the wildest stage shows out there – especially outside (QRO live review outdoors). Led by King Khan himself (of duo King Khan & BBQ Show – QRO photos), wearing a Speedo & garbage bag poncho/cape, the group is known for its go-go dancer, battling on stage, diving into the crowd, leading fans in sing-along renditions of “I Wish I Was a Girl” and “Stone Soup” (QRO video), and starting a projectile war with the audience by hurling bananas at them…

John MausDoug Fir, 830 E Burnside St.
9:00pm – Swahili
10:00pm – Strategy
11:00pm – Onuinu
12:00am – John Maus

While also a keyboard player for Panda Bear (QRO album review) and Ariel Pink (QRO live review), John Maus is becoming best known for his uninhibited solo shows (QRO photos outdoors).

Quasi Hawthorne Theatre, 1507 S 39th Ave.
9:00pm – White Fang
10:00pm – Quasi
11:00pm – Lightning Bolt

Exes Sam Coomes (QRO interview) & Janet Weiss have got back together a few years ago, musically at least, for the latest go-round of their band Quasi (QRO live review), including 2010’a American Gong (QRO review) – and recruited Joanna Bolme of, like Weiss, Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks (QRO live review).Since then Weiss left The Jicks for Portland supergroup Wild Flag (QRO live review), but Coomes gets his gang (QRO spotlight on) back together to play MFNW (QRO photos at a festival) and a new record upcoming.

Before there was the plethora of wild guitar-and-drums duos that there are today, there was Lightning Bolt (QRO photos) – a bass-and-drums duo known for guerilla-style shows who put out their fifth noise-rock LP, Earthly Delights, in 2009.

Lightning BoltHolocene, 1001 SE Morrison St.

Mississippi Studios, 3939 N Mississippi Ave.

10:00pm – Lemolo
11:00pm – Alialujah Choir

7:15pm – Reignwolf
8:00pm – Those Darlins
9:00pm – Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit
10:30pm – Old 97s

Roseland goes alt-country as the Old 97s perform Too Far To Care, along with openers Jason Isbell & The 400 Unit (QRO photos at a festival), Those Darlins (QRO photos at a festival), and Reignwolf.

The MenStar Theater, 13 NW 6th Ave.
9:00pm – The People’s Temple
10:00pm – Mean Jeans
11:00pm – The Men

Harder-hitting pop-rock outfit The Men (QRO photos at a festival) cross boundaries from pop to metal to experimental (QRO photos at a festival).

Purity RingTed’s Berbati, 19 SW 2nd Ave.
9:00pm – Headaches
10:00pm – Evian Christ
11:00pm – Purity Ring

From the other side of North America, Montreal’s Purity Ring (QRO photos) bring some of the new indie-electronic (QRO photos).

Flying LotusWonder Ballroom, 128 NE Russell St.
9:30pm – Jacques Greene
10:30pm – Nosaj Thing
11:30pm – Flying Lotus

While Flying Lotus (QRO photos outdoors) might be best known for making the music in Adult Swim’s bumpers (that text right before a show on the cable channel), he’s also an accomplished producer, as well as making & playing music in his own right (QRO live review).

Friday, September 7th

Menomena Doug Fir, 830 E Burnside St.
10:30am – Menomena
12:30pm – The Pains of Being Pure at Heart
2:30pm – Lost Lander
4:30pm – Black Mountain

Pioneer Courthouse Square, 701 SW 6th Ave.
5:30pm – Gardens & Villa
6:30pm – Menomena
8:00pm – Beirut

Indie-rockers can be funky, creative, and rock at the same time. Gardens & Villa (QRO photos at a festival) seem to be on a constant quest to prove this (QRO photos at a festival) – including with pipes (QRO photos).

Acclaimed Portland experimental indie duo Menomena (QRO live review) are back at Music Fest NW (QRO photos at MFNW) with the upcoming Moms, their latest since 2010’s Mines (QRO review) and 2007’s Friend and Foe (QRO review).

While Zach Condon began his instrumental outfit Beirut (QRO photos at a festival) as a solo project (QRO photos at a festival), he’s since developed it into a full band (QRO photos at a festival), featuring just about every instrument you’ve ever heard of (QRO photos at a festival), most recently on last year’s The Rip Tide (QRO review).

Baltimore’s Future Islands (QRO photos) play a darker form of synth-pop.
Talkdemonic
Bunk Bar, 1028 SE Water Ave. #130
10:00pm – French Cassettes
11:00pm – Mimicking Birds
12:00am – Talkdemonic

From avant-Portland comes the avant-instrumental outfit Talkdemonic (QRO photos at MFNW), along with PDX’s more alt-country Mimicking Birds (QRO live review in Portland).
Unknown Mortal Orchestra
Crystal Ballroom, 1332 W Burnside St.
8:00pm – Hosannas
9:00pm – Radiation City
10:00pm – Unknown Mortal Orchestra
11:00pm – The Helio Sequence

From Portland (QRO photos in Portland), but also New Zealand, Unknown Mortal Orchestra (QRO live review) impressed a lot of ears with their self-titled debut (QRO review), which managed to be avant while also still rockin’.

While their last full-length was 2008’s Keep Your Eyes Ahead (QRO review), wherein singer/guitarist Brandon Summers lost his voice and relearned to sing, guitar-and-drums two-piece The Helio Sequence, from nearby Beaverton, OR (QRO photos at a festival in Oregon), knows how to fill a stage (QRO photos at a festival), and are releasing the new Negotiations in September – just keep an eye on drummer Benjamin Weikel’s goofy faces (QRO photos)…
The Helio Sequence
Dante’s, 350 W Burnside St.
9:30pm – Bison Bison
10:30pm – Sons of Huns
11:30pm – Poison Idea
12:30am – Fucked Up

While Holy Fuck (QRO live review) lost the Polaris Music Prize in 2008, that kind of a name didn’t stop Fucked Up from winning it the following year with Chemistry of Common Life (though it almost derailed The Pool Parties at Williamsburg Waterfront in Brooklyn – QRO photos), and the band followed that up with singles collection Couple Tracks (QRO review) and last year’s concept rock opus, David Comes to Life, which they’ll be playing in full at Music Fest NW. Whether their hardcore music lives up to praise rarely given to hardcore is still up for debate, but what isn’t is how nuts the crowd goes (QRO photos at a festival) for this act out of Toronto (QRO photos outdoors), with singer/frontman Damian Abraham bringing it, shirtless and crazy (QRO photos at a festival).

Fucked UpDoug Fir, 830 E Burnside St.
8:30pm – Grandparents
9:30pm – Old Light
10:30pm – Quest For Fire
11:30pm – Black Mountain

Vancouver’s Black Mountain (QRO photos) are a hard, heavy rock band, who, despite hard, heavy records like In the Future (QRO review) and Wilderness Heart, move in the indie-sphere for some reason.

9:00pm – Danny Brown
10:00pm – Yelawolf

Imagine the movie Winter’s Bone, but with significantly more hip-hop and you’ve got Yelawolf (QRO photos at a festival). The Alabama native is proud of his ‘bama-ness, and has gained a decent following with his rapid-fire flow.
The Pains of Being Pure at Heart
Star Theater, 13 NW 6th Ave.
8:00pm – AAN
9:00pm – Moon Duo
10:00pm – Daughn Gibson
11:00pm – The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart

One of the many Brooklyn neo-garage acts to break out, The Pains of Being Pure at Heart (QRO live review) hewed more towards the brighter, twee side of things on their self-titled debut LP (QRO review), but veered into neo-John Hughes territory with last year’s great Belong (QRO review). A band (QRO photos) that deserved to break out of the Brooklyn garage (QRO photos outside of NYC), live & outdoors (QRO photos outdoors at a festival), they really kick it up a notch (QRO live review outdoors).

Montreal’s Alain Macklovitch – a.k.a. 6:00pm – AU
7:00pm – STRFKR
8:30pm – Girl Talk

Once and sometimes still known as ‘Starfucker’ (QRO photos) – and also as PYRAMID – having ‘fuck’ in your name isn’t the career handicap it used to be, as the Portland-based electronic band STRFKR (QRO photos) have been making dance music that’s also great to listen to.

Greg Gillis (Girl TalkQRO photos at a festival) moved from biomedical tissue engineering to DJ mash-up engineering (QRO photos at a festival), taking samples from across the spectrum and making something very new (QRO photos at a festival). While he started out playing clubs, he’s graduated to ballroom & even the great outdoors (QRO photos outdoors) – but that just means he’s got bigger stages (QRO photos outdoors at a festival) and festivals (QRO photos at a festival) to fill with dancing concertgoers… (QRO photos at a festival)

10:00pm – Serious Business
11:00pm – Big Freedia

Just as the post-Katrina rebuilding of New Orleans has been taking a while, so has the post-Katrina (re)discovery of New Orleans music – but one of the biggest & best to come out of the Big Easy is bounce music, mixing hip-hop with local dance and Mardi Gras call-and-response, and one of the biggest & best in bounce is Big Freedia (QRO photos at a festival), with the big asses (QRO photos).
The Tallest Man On Earth

10:30pm – The Tallest Man On Earth

There are a lot of alt-folk solo singer/songwriters out there these days. Sweden’s Kristian Matsson (QRO photos at a festival), a.k.a. The Tallest Man On Earth (QRO photos at a festival), first got notice for his Dylan-esque ways (QRO photos at a festival) when opening for fellow alt-folk solo singer/songwriter Justin Vernon, a.k.a. Bon Iver (QRO live review), but has since graduated to headliner (QRO photos as headliner) – and still operates solo (QRO photos).

9:00pm – The Needful Longings
10:00pm – The Suicide Notes

12:00am – Redd Kross

The hard punk of Redd Kross made them a mainstay of the eighties punk scene alongside Circle Jerks (QRO live review) and Black Flag (both of whom shared members with Kross), made it to a major label in the nineties, but went on indefinite hiatus after the death of guitarist Eddie Kurdzeil in 1999. But, after almost a decade off the stage, Redd Kross is back, touring their new Researching the Blues, the first new Redd Kross record in fifteen years.

Spencer Krug became known as one-half of the great Wolf Parade (QRO live review), but also headed up his own, more disjointed outfit Sunset Rubdown (QRO live review). However, after Wolf Parade went on hiatus last year (QRO live review of one of the last shows), Krug shed the Sunset for his new Moonface.

Roseland Theater, 8 NW 8th Ave.
9:00pm – J Mascis
10:00pm – Sebadoh
11:00pm – Dinosaur Jr.

Music Fest NW managed to book maybe the awesomest line-up ever at Roseland Theater.Headlining is the back & better than ever Dinosaur Jr.! In the late eighties and early nineties, one of the biggest & best bands in the punk-grunge revolution was Dinosaur Jr. (QRO live review), combining a hippie-punk ethos (and artwork) with feedback-driven guitar from the legendary J Mascis (QRO solo album review). The trio (QRO live review) was also characterized by Mascis’ controlling tendencies, leading to the departure first of bassist Lou Barlow (QRO solo album review) for his Sebadoh (QRO live review) and eventually even beloved drummer Murph, with Mascis retiring the ‘Dinosaur Jr.’ moniker in 1997.

But then the band reunited (QRO live review outdoors) – with original line-up! – to tour their re-release of old, Barlow-era records (QRO photos at a festival in St. LOUis). And they kept going (QRO photos at a festival), putting out two new records that are some of their best yet, Beyond (QRO review) and Farm (QRO review), with I Bet On Sky coming out this fall. So revel in the glory (QRO photos at a festival) that is Dinosaur Jr. (QRO photos) – but bring your earplugs, because J’s ‘circle of amps’ is a force to be reckoned with (QRO photos at a festival)…

Oh, and who’s opening?Well, first J Mascis plays solo (QRO photos solo at a festival) – and then it’s Barlow’s own Sebadoh!Cross your fingers that Mascis will join Lou for “Freed Pig”…

But what will Murph be doing?…

Sun-soaked, fuzzy, dream pop that should go well with a sun-soaked festival. Wild Nothing is Jack Tatum’s wonderful solo project (QRO live review), and with Nocturne (QRO review), the follow-up to his wonderful first album Gemini (QRO album review) just out, there’s sure to be plenty of new music afoot (QRO photos at a festival).Openers include the post-post-punk, ‘post-apocalyptic’ Soft Moon, and Nothing friends DIIV (QRO live review together).

The Hives Wonder Ballroom, 128 NE Russell St.
9:30pm – FIDLAR
10:30pm – The Hives

‘The’ garage-rock explosion a decade or so ago gave a lot of ‘The’ bands, including The White Stripes (QRO live review), The Kills (QRO live review), The Vines (QRO album review), and the most energetic of the bunch – The Hives! Swedish outfit have the kind of explosive & fun live (QRO live review) that Jack White (QRO album review) only wish he could pull off, with maximum call-and-response & frenetic activity. The Hives come to Music Fest NW (QRO photos at a festival) behind their latest, Lex Hives (QRO review).

8:00pm – Silversun Pickups

In 2006, Los Angeles’ Echo Lake music scene blew up in a big way – all thanks to Silversun Pickups (QRO photos) & Carnavas. In 2009, they finally followed that up with Swoon (QRO review), which charted even higher – and they come to Music Fest NW (QRO photos outdoors) behind the new Neck of the Woods (QRO review).
