Savannah Stopover 2013 Preview

Just before & after Austin’s massive South-by-Southwest in the middle of March, cities throughout the warm southeast put on their own multi-venue festivals to catch the bands, the press, and the fans heading into & out of Austin.  One of the best is the Savannah Stopover in the historic town on Georgia’s coast.

Enjoy the diverse range of artists, local, national, and international, Thursday to Saturday, March 7th to 9th.

And here’s a great map of all the participating venues:

Late in 2011, the indie world was stunned when Thurston Moore & Kim Gordon, the married couple at the heart of the venerable alt-punk icons Sonic Youth (QRO live review), announced that they were filing for divorce.  “What will this mean for Sonic Youth?” everyone asked (including, seemingly, SY guitarist Lee Renaldo).

Well, Sonic Youth has been on hiatus since then, but its members have been active in their own projects, such as Moore’s (QRO solo live review) new Chelsea Light Moving, who come to Savannah Stopover with Merchandise (QRO photos at a festival).

Forsyth Park
621 Drayton St., all ages
7:00pm – Royal Canoe
8:00pm – of Montreal

There are few acts that do a live show like of Montreal (QRO live review).  Kevin Barnes’ epic orchestra (QRO photos at a festival) literally fills the stage (QRO photos at a festival) with a performance more akin to (the actually French Canadian) Cirque du Soleil than indie-rock (QRO live review).  The band emerged out of the Elephant Six Collective to reach serious heights, most recently with 2010’s False Priest (QRO review), 2012’s Paralytic Stalks (QRO review) and extras Daughter of the Cloud (QRO review), but they have to be seen live (QRO live review) to be truly believed (QRO photos at a festival).

Hang Fire
37 Whitaker St., 21+
BRAIDS5:00pm – Blackrune
6:00pm – Friend Roulette
7:00pm – Swear and Shake

Hang Fire
37 Whitaker St., 21+
10:30pm – Moon King
11:30pm – HAERTS
12:30am – BRAIDS

For a band that turned a chance opening slot for Deerhunter (QRO live review) into a standing ovation and demands of an encore from the band, BRAIDS (QRO photos) is most definitely deserving of the ‘force to be reckoned with’ status that critics seem so eager to give them (QRO photos).  What’s more, after a Polaris Prize shortlisting in Canada, and a record deal with Chad VanGaalen (QRO album review)’s Flemish Eye label, the band has only picked up steam (QRO photos).
