Black Lips

                                                                        STAGE 1
11:00 PM – 11:45 PM: Black Lips

A band better known for their live show than their records, that’s not just because of the relatively unimpressive recorded material like this year’s 200 Million Thousand (QRO review), but also due to their crazy mishmash of genres and styles on stage (QRO live review).  Atlanta’s The Black Lips’ wild live show includes everything from nudity to fireworks – and live animals (QRO photos at a festival).  Who knows what Los Angeles State Historic Park will let the boys get away with this time (QRO photos outdoors), but be rest assured their rabidly loyal fan base will be crying out for more (QRO photos outdoors at a festival).

Black Lips

10:05 PM – 10:40 PM: No Age

L.A.’s young guitar & drums duo of Randy Randall and Dean Allen Spunt have been blowing up very quickly since last year’s Nouns (QRO review), including joining Dan Deacon (see below) & Deerhunter on the ‘Round Robin’ tour (QRO live review) & a controversial appearance on Late Late Show with Craig Kilborn.  The punk rock of such tracks as “Eraser” (QRO video), “Teen Creeps” (QRO video) and “Ripped Knees” (QRO video) plays fast, but look out for a young weekend daytime crowd to go nuts (QRO live review).

No Age

9:05 PM – 9:45 PM: Tim & Eric

Out of the ashes of the hilariously deadpan absurdist Tom Goes to the Mayor on Adult Swim came the even more deadpanly absurdist (and live-action…) Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job!.  And now Tim Heidecker & Eric Wareheim bring ‘Channel 5 Married News Team’, Cinco Corporation, ‘Uncles Muscles Hour’ and more out of the TV set and onto the stage (QRO photos outdoors at a festival)…

Tim & Eric Awesome Show, Great Job!

7:45 PM – 8:40 PM: Fucked Up

Officially listed as ‘F* Up’ for the F Yeah Festival, that name has given the band problems – almost derailed The Pool Parties at Williamsburg Waterfront (QRO photos), another state park.  But what the rangers should really be wary of is how nuts the crowd goes for this act out of (surprisingly) Toronto (QRO photos outdoors), with singer/frontman Damian Abraham trying to out-shirtless fat man-wild Tim Harrington of Les Savy Fav (QRO photos).

Fucked Up

7:05 PM – 7:35 PM: The Strange Boys

6:15 PM – 6:45 PM: Times New Viking

Columbus, Ohio’s Times New Viking were on the leading edge of the ‘shitgaze’ genre, along with acts like No Age (see above), and they didn’t clean up their lo-fi sound for last year’s Rip It Off, their debut on Matador.  They’re a bit more melodic, less wild, than other shitgaze acts – which unfortunately make them more boring, live & outdoors (QRO photos outdoors at a festival).

Times New Viking

5:10 PM – 5:55 PM: Dan Deacon

It can’t be a wild, DIY fest with Dan Deacon (QRO photos)!  The Baltimore native is a man of many talents, including throwing his own DIY festivals & tours, like the recent ‘Round Robin’ tour (QRO live review) with No Age (see above) & Deerhunter.  But he’s still best known as an electronic musician, most recently with Bromst (QRO review), which gets wild live, whether with his fifteen-piece backing band (QRO live review) or Deacon standing & playing from in the crowd (QRO photos, outdoors at a festival).

Dan Deacon

4:15 PM – 4:45 PM: WAVVES

After WAVVES singer/guitarist Nathan Williams had a very public breakdown, on stage at Barcelona’s Primavera Festival (later blaming technical problems, and “alcohol addiction” – isn’t that what disgraced Rep. Mark Foley said?…), the San Diego act cancelled their whole European tour, but they’ve since been on the rebound/redemption tour in the States (QRO photos at a festival).  Of course, why their uninspired shitgaze gets so much attention is anybody’s guess…

WAVVES

3:25 PM – 3:55 PM: Crystal Antlers

Hailing from nearby Long Beach, Crystal Antlers (QRO photos at a festival) bring a more experimental – but still loud – side to F Yeah, coming off of debut full-length Tentacles, the last from famed label Touch & Go.

Crystal Antlers

2:35 PM – 3:05 PM: Woods

Like their name implies, Brooklyn’s Woods traffic in outdoor, ‘woods-y’ sounds, but add some freak to that folk with electronica (QRO photos at a festival).

Woods

1:45 PM – 2:15 PM: Avi Buffalo

                                                                        STAGE 2
10:35 PM – 11:25 PM: Dillinger Escape Plan

New Jersey’s Dillinger Escape Plan (not to be confused with Dillinger Four – QRO photos – of last year’s festival & tour) have endured numerous line-up changes over the years, but have gotten more & more critical acclaim, with their last, 2007’s Ire Works, earning the mathcore band being referred to as "The Radiohead of metalcore."  In May, they started their own label, and the new Option Paralysis is out soon.

Dillinger Escape Plan

9:30 PM – 10:15 PM: Converge

Salem’s Converge have brought together punk & metal into the metalcore witch’s brew since the early nineties, finding themselves on major punk label Epitaph, and the new Axe To Fall out the following month.

Converge

8:25 PM – 9:05 PM: Torche

Miami’s Torche have toured hard with likes of The Sword (QRO live review of both), and last year’s Meanderthal was rated #1 on Decibel Magazine’s “Most Extreme Albums of the Year”.  And the metal act is continuing on, even after the departure of guitarist Juan Montoya over “creative differences”…

Torche

7:20 PM – 8:05 PM: Lucero

These cowpunkers (QRO photos) arrive at today’s workingman’s punk from the southern, country/punk end of things.  Singer/guitarist Ben Nichols did his own thing with a solo record and ‘Revival Tour’ (QRO photos at a festival) with Chuck Ragan (Hot Water Music – QRO photos) and Tim Barry (Avail), but the band has since gone big-time, including a four-album major label deal, with 1372 Overtone Park out the following month, as well as starring in MTV’s quasi-fictional $5 Cover.  But live & outdoors (QRO photos outdoors at a festival), they stay true to their roots.

Lucero

6:15 PM – 7:00 PM: The Thermals

Portland, Oregon’s The Thermals (QRO photos) have become lo-fi heroes since their debut, More Parts Per Million, delivering catchy pop-punk the kids love.  However, even after moving from Seattle’s Sub Pop to their hometown’s Kill Rock Stars this year with Now We Can See (QRO review), they’ve never become that impressive to a finer-tuned ear.  But they’ve got a legion of fans that turn out in force, especially outdoors (QRO photos outdoors), at a festival (QRO photos at a festival), and especially outdoors at a festival (QRO photos outdoors at a festival).

The Thermals

5:20 PM – 5:50 PM: Mika Miko

Los Angeles’ own underground noise-rock outfit, Mika Miko gained notoriety for their wild live performances, even stating that they sound better live than on record, so expect as much for the hometown crowd.

Mika Miko

4:30 PM – 5:00 PM: Carbonas

3:40 PM – 4:10 PM: Darker My Love

Los Angeles’ Darker My Love marry the shoegaze of My Bloody Valentine to the krautrock of Can, creating their own form of indie-psychedelica, most recently on last year’s 2.

Darker My Love

2:50 PM – 3:20 PM: dios

Alternative music is littered with acts that have had to change their name, under threat of lawsuit (most notably Jefferson Airplane spin-off Dinosaur forcing the addition of ‘Jr.’ early in the career of iconic punk band Dinosaur Jr. – QRO live review), and one of those was California’s dios, which had to add ‘(malos)’ after their self-titled debut (same thing with debut LP Dinosaur…) brought a lawsuit from Ronnie James Dio (of Black Sabbath/Tenacious D song fame).  Follow-up dios (malos) wasn’t received as well, and after signing to Buddyhead Records earlier this year, the alt-soft band decided “I Want It All”, and are returning to their original moniker, Dio be damned!

dios

2:00 PM – 2:30 PM: Grabass Charlestons

                                                                        STAGE 3
10:40 PM – 11:25 PM: Glass Candy

Now well into their second decade, the Portland, Oregon electronica duo of singer Ida No & instrumentalist/producer Johnny Jewel have moved from their noise rock-meets-electropop origins to incorporating such diverse sounds as Italian disco & Marilyn Monroe as Glass Candy, most recently on last year’s Deep Gems, but they’ve been working feverishly on a new record for this year, so expect new material.

Glass Candy

9:50 PM – 10:20 PM: Telepathe

‘The most boring band in New York’ comes across the country to Los Angeles.  On debut LP Dance Mother (QRO review), their electro-pop is just utterly forgettable – can even forget that it’s on.  But live, Busy Gangnes & Melissa Livaudis get even duller – especially outdoors (QRO photos outdoors).

Telepathe

9:00 PM – 9:30 PM: Cold Cave

7:55 PM – 7:35 PM: Peanut Butter Wolf

At some point, bands stopped using ‘wolf’ in their name (probably around the time AIDS Wolf – QRO photos – first appeared…), but DJs & producers have kept it going, such as San Jose’s Chris Manak, a.k.a. Peanut Butter Wolf, though he’s been spinning since 1989.  While he originally started as a producer, he’s moved to DJing & his own label, Stones Throw (Madlib, Madvillian).

Peanut Butter Wolf

6:55 PM – 7:35 PM: Lightning Bolt

Before there was the plethora of wild guitar-and-drums duos that there are today, there was Lightning Bolt – a bass-and-drums duo known for guerilla-style shows who are putting out their fifth noise-rock LP, Earthly Delights, the following month.

Lightning Bolt

6:05 PM – 6:35 PM: Japanther

While Brooklyn’s Japanther (QRO photos) are best known for their wild live shows, they’ve also got a more serious side, especially in their efforts for environmental causes.  However, with this line-up, expect Japanther to stick to the wild (QRO photos).

Japanther

5:45 PM – 6:05 PM: Ninjasonik

“We are Ninjasonik!  We are sonic fucking ninjas!”  So goes the anthem of Brooklyn’s hip-hop duo, Ninjasonik (QRO photos).  But don’t be thinking they won’t have a place at F Yeah, as their crowds go just as wild (QRO photos).  In fact, they’re something of every indie-hipster’s favorite rap act (including Japanther – see above), playing at numerous alt-rock festivals (QRO photos at a festival).

Ninjasonik

5:00 PM – 5:30 PM: Har Mar Superstar

Somewhere between solo singer/songwriter, pop-star diva, and Ron Jeremy lies Har Mar Superstar.  Sean Tillmann adopted the persona to underground acclaim, especially in Great Britain, as well as becoming spokesman for Vladivar Vodka and Lynx Deodorant.  He’s also written songs for the likes of Jennifer Lopez & Kelly Osbourne, and Britney Spears’ management’s rejection of “Tall Boys” only brought him to make his own version, for his new record, Dark Touches, out the following month.

Har Mar Superstar

4:00 PM – 5:00 PM: Comedy

3:25 PM – 3:40 PM: Food Drive Winners

2:35 PM – 3:05 PM: Nobunny

When Tucson’s Justin Champlin puts on his bunny mask, he becomes Nobunny, a jackalope-human hybrid born & raised in the Arizona desert, mixing lo-fi punk with bubblegum pop.

Nobunny

1:55 PM – 2:20 PM: Kurt Vile

The lead guitarist in Philadelphia’s The War On Drugs (QRO photos), Kurt Vile has been busting out on his own (though sometimes with back band The Violators) with a more psychedelic sound.  He’s got a new record, Childish Prodigy, out on Matador in the fall.

Kurt Vile

1:30 PM – 1:55 PM: Eat Skull
