Grant-Lee Phillips : All That You Can Dream

Alt-folk troubadour Grant-Lee Phillips has long had his intimate, introspective side, so it was only natural that the worldwide pandemic lockdown would bring it out. He did a livestream series from his home, he released a Christmas EP, Yuletide (QRO review), and now pulls up a chair with All That You Can Dream.

Dream is distinctly an intimate, acoustic affair, largely showing Phillips’ sweet side on songs from wry opener “A Sudden Place” to swaying finish “All By Heart”. There aren’t the big rocking numbers from Grant Lee Buffalo of old, but instead the likes of the empty room “Peace Is a Delicate Thing”, down-home “Rats in a Barrel”, spiritual “My Eyes Have Seen”, and the airy title piece. And while largely a sad affair, Phillips’ charm does get a few chances to smile, such as “Place” and the relaxed “Remember This”.

Hopefully we’re all getting out of the lockdown, getting out there. But we still need intimate artists like Grant-Lee Phillips and All That he Can Dream.
